More from the article ...

... President Donald Trump's threat to curtail diesel shipments abroad comes with a risk: the perception that he's reneging on his promise to shower the world with U.S. fuels.

That move would inflame tensions between the U.S. and Europe while jeopardizing American credibility as a trading partner, energy experts and administration allies said. And it could compel nations to seek other suppliers, limiting Trump's ability to wield energy as a negotiating tool in the future, they added.

"This is going to damage our reputation," said an external adviser to the Trump administration, who was granted anonymity to discuss private conversations. "The whole premise of energy dominance was that the United States would be able to supply our allies around the world. Curtailing that is going to raise question marks."

Plans to limit U.S. diesel exports are under discussion at the White House as the fuel's price soars because of oil supply disruptions stemming from the Iran war. The Trump administration is considering different options, from a full-scale 90-day export ban to incremental limits on outbound diesel. The idea is fiercely opposed by the oil and gas industry over worries that it could make them less competitive in overseas markets. ...

OK, so Pres Trump's whimsical policy decisions seem to give our allies a reason to look elsewhere for trade.

And that is good for the United States, how?

Sometimes there are no good choices, just hard decisions...and for that to work, you need to be able to trust those administering the actions. I don't trust a single one of the Trump gang to do anything but look for the grift and make Sure they and the super rich profit, and we, the poor, get poorer.

If there is any moment in time that highlights the need to get off of fossil fuels; this is it. There have been signals in the past that went unheeded but now it is inescapable. As Europe reconfigures it's energy infrastructure, instead of looking east for fuel, it should be looking south; to Africa. Spend money there to build out the fossil fuel capabilities of African countries until it can rid itself of its dependence on oil from the middle east and the USA. It will take time but it won't happen if you don't start.

~ Stupid people.

The reputation doesn't matter at this point, interest reached 0% and is now going back up.

The old rules don't apply.

Export ban is a moron's solution.

It will solve nothing.

The issue is distribution, getting the diesel and heating oil where it is needed.

There are no pipelines from the fields to the west coast and the pipeline to the northeast is running at full capacity.

Meaning maybe rerouting shipping (against the law btw), but that will cause a disruption itself as the new routes are planned, shipping is diverted etc.

Will the ban be lifted by the time that all gets worked out? Probably

So, the refineries will have this excess capacity that they can't ship to other countries and can't distribute quickly enough to where it is needed in the US, so they will slow production

Which will slow production of gasoline and other petroleum products from the refinery process.

the basic law of supply and demand means rising prices

To say nothing of the retaliation from other countries due to the harm we will cause them

so, yeah, really bad idea.

For the uninformed

Crude oil is pumped from the ground and transported to a refinery.

Refineries have a maximum capacity that they can refine the crude oil into useable product-bunker oil, gasoline, kerosene, diesel, etc.

Our refineries are working at maximum capacity

We have limited storage capacity for this oil like those big tanks you see near highways

So that refined product has to be distributed

We export around 1/4 of that capacity or around 1.5 million barrels per day

If piggy says no exporting oil (which would be socialism btw), then the 1.5 million barrels per day has to go somewhere.

Pipeline distribution is maxed out.

So, if it isn't exported and cannot be put into the overland distribution network, where does it go?

Strategic petroleum reserve? Well, that sort of defeats the purpose of the export ban doesn't it. And filling the SPR when prices are high is well dumb

It can be put on ships and shipped to NYC and Boston and Maine and Seattle and San Fran etc

Yes, but switching to that model will take time as ships need to be rerouted, ports have to have shipping capacity, oil storage and trucking needs to be available.

That sort of distribution will take time

And what is the incentive to the oil companies? This is price control, hitting their profits

They will, of course, slow down refining so the oil can meet distribution, with that reduction goes gasoline, kerosene etc.

So, does piggy order the oil companies to keep their refining capacity up? Now that is serious socialism
