On another site about five years ago, I wrote about the fact that servicing the national debt [ie., just paying the interest owed, not lowering it] will in the not too distant future be the largest part of our annual budget, and as it grows larger eventually it will be necessary for cuts in programs, and even eliminating some due to lack of funding.....

Republicans have historically added the most to the national debt, and it's not even close

Then why didn't you lead the fight to let the $trillions of tax giveaways expire?

You were dead silent then, and after that you VOTED FOR the people who said they'd make it worse.

If you're looking for blame, start in your mirror.

Trump single handedly increased the national debt 30%.

I'm not sure anyone understands how insane that actually is.

Sorry pal, you had your chance when the question of extending the trillions in tax giveaways came up.

You were dead silent.

If you're posting to take the blame, continue.

If not, kindly help yourself to a heaping bowl of STFU.

Correction, Republicans spend like drunken sailors, democrats spend to fix the problems caused by republicans

Ex. Dubya-tax cuts for the rich, illegal wars of aggression
Obama-fixing the republican caused great recession
Piggy-tax cuts for the rich, defunding the ACA
Biden-fix the Piggy caused recession due to Covid
Piggy2-more tax cuts for the rich, illegal wars of aggression

Rescind the Trump tax giveaways.

"If so, I'm all ears."

No, you're not. I've mentioned this before, multiple times. You clearly weren't listening then.

But that doesn't address the fact you voted FOR the folks who returned the largest deficits in American history. And then you voted for them again. And then again, even after they said they'd RENEW the trillions in tax giveaways.

" Rescind the Trump tax giveaways."

Okay. That addresses the revenue side a bit, but of course you will always use static revenue projections as if people won't respond economically to tax increases. How about spending? What are Democrats proposing to address our ridiculous levels of spending? I see how they respond to any attempts to address fraudulent spending.

Trump gave elon musk free reign over the budget to find and slash wasteful spending. They promised to cut trillions and send out checks to the american people. You know how much they actually found? I won't blow the surprise for you. Go google it.

While you're googling, look up which party has a solid record of being worse for the debt.

Trump and republicans spend like there's no tomorrow and BellBringer is wondering what democrats plan to do about it.

Trump has increased the national debt by 30%.

(I know you don't understand what that means. It's a staggering amount.)

Meanwhile, every democratic president has lowered the debt ceiling

Want to fix America? Eliminate the tax cuts handed out by Trump, BushJr and Reagan.

But Republicans don't care about the debt and will continue voting for MAGA who have proven themselves an enemy of America.

I'm not sure how the word "ceiling" got in there.

I most likely accidentally clicked on the suggested word and didn't proof read to see the error.

I agree. That sentence should have ended after the word "debt".

Democrats wouldn't have extended the Trump $5 Trillion giveaway. In fact, they wouldn't have passed it in the first place.

Any why are you ignoring the salient moment when Cheney and Dubya reset America's fiscal sights???

"It's complicated to assign debt"

Let me ask a Math 101 question:

If you're running a deficit budget, and you've got sunsetting tax breaks that'll cost $5 Trillion dollars if you extend them...

...Does extending them represent 100% NEWLY BORROWED MONEY?

It's a yes or no question.

#24 | Posted by Danforth at 2026-09-30 03:35 PM | Reply

-That's why you blame the folks who changed directions.

My only issue with blaming one party is that it feels like I'm letting the other party off the hook.

No dice.

Not doing that. I'm not challenging the facts with regards to Cheney or Dubya....but "blame" is just not enough for me.

If it works for you, then fine.

"My only issue with blaming one party is that it feels like I'm letting the other party off the hook"

Neither deserves to be off the hook.

One, in particular, deserves the blame for resetting America's fiscal sights, so they could have two rounds of tax cuts for the wealthiest. Which has now turned into FOUR sets of tax cuts for the wealthiest.

"If it works for you, then fine."

Actual history of the math IS fine; I agree.

Except when the President presides over unnecessary tax cuts for the wealthy, unnecessary wars, looting the nation, demolishing DC, throwing himself parties, and spending like he's got no worries because he's going to die within a decade.

While I see your point.

Trump is an outlier.

Everything he's done is self serving and destructive.

-Neither party cares about the debt

I think individuals might care about debt but parties don't.

But to everyone NOT shackled to partisan bickery....debt is an abstraction. It gets twisted and taken out of context, assigned to presidents and/or congresses depending on where you blame to lie, etc.

It's just an abstraction to most people. the numbers are so insanely big....it can't be comprehended.

And since it takes issues like abortion, guns, gays, etc...to get people to pay attention politically.....the debt is simply ignored.

Cut defense by 2/3 because as we have seen recently a trillion dollars per year is getting us a crappy military that is losing to a third rate power because we haven't prepared for the new form of warfare

That's a problem with capitalism, you get a military/defense complex based on raising profits and not national defense
