Biden Set to Apologize for Indian Boarding Schools

President Joe Biden plans to formally apologize Friday for the U.S. government's role in running hundreds of Indian boarding schools for a 150-year period that stripped Native American children of their language and culture in a systematic effort to force them to assimilate into White society, according to administration officials.

Wow! Looks like Joe thinks Kamala might get elected and he's wary of that "license to kill" SCOTUS just gave presidents.

Almost all of the former students are dead. But playing along, reparations for sending them to school, not for taking the continent from them? Or should "we" pay reparations for that as well. Wonder what that would entail? Make Blacks, Mexicans, Chinese pay reparations, that would be fun to see.

Who do we take the money from to pay these reparations, and who exactly are the recipients?

#5 | Posted by lfthndthrds at 2024-10-25 08:25 AM

About all that can be done now is recognition through an apology. Recommend "In the White Man's Image," part of the PBS "American Experience" series, a terrific intro to the "education" process to which the kids were subjected, its roots, etc ... .at youtu.be

The kids were kidnapped? Really? They took kids from healthy homes with non-abusive parents that were taking good care? Why would they do that?

#10 | Posted by visitor_ at 2024-10-25 03:06 PM

Reparations are Marxist and un-American! Except when they aren't.

The Civil Liberties Act of 1988 granted reparations to Japanese Americans who had been interned by the U.S. government during World War II. The Act's purpose was to discourage the occurrence of similar injustices and violations of civil liberties in the future. The majority of Democrats in Congress supported the legislation. The majority of Republicans voted against it. The Act was signed into law by 'radical left-wing extremist', President Ronald Reagan. Each surviving internee received $20,000 in compensation (approximately $45,000 in today's money). The Act stated that government actions had been based on "race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership" as opposed to legitimate security reasons. A total of 82,219 individuals received these reparation payments.

I'll admit - if Harris doesn't win that's not an unappealing thought, but you are talking about a man that always put America and the Constitution first, always deferring to precedent. Otherwise we'd have more SCOTUS judges today to dilute the dumbfuq Sharia Supremes.

Please, enlighten us with the true history of the Native Americans over the last 250 or so years. I'd love to hear your version.

#21 | Posted by El_Buscador at 2024-10-25 05:11 PM

#10 Visitor They did that because in their racist minds they considered Native Americans savages. They wanted to make them "civilized." FYI, White people (not all) think that anyone not white are inferior and little above animals, hence the word savage. Europeans couldn't understand that Native Anericans didn't believe in land ownership or believed in gods and nature rather than White people's Christian God. While at the same time they were killing the Native Americans, stealing their land, breaking every treaty they signed, and putting them on reservations and stealing their children. A great book to read is "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown.

#22 | Posted by Ronnie68 at 2024-10-25 05:11 PM

The irony. It was Lakota at Wounded Knee. Lakota are Souix. The Souix didn't name themselves Souix.

I wonder how they got that name? It didn't come from White People.

#23 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2024-10-25 05:28 PM

Background Info: The name "sioux" is short for Nadowessioux, meaning "little snakes", which was a spiteful nickname given to them by the Ojibwe, their longtime foe. The fur traders abbreviated this name to Sioux and is now commonly used.

Trump didn't really try. It wasn't even a half-assed attempt, at best. If Biden invokes martial law, it's a whole different ball game. Everyone is distracted by Kamala and Donald and no one will be expecting it.

No reparations? = another festering wound.

#28 | Posted by fresno500 at 2024-10-25 07:19 PM

The least we can do is honor the treaties our leaders signed.

But tribes have had a while to learn about law and what exactly those treaties mean. We've seen major water rights adjudication and some settlements over mismanagement of trust by the tribes' steward, the the U.S. Federal government.

Hopefully, we'll see more to come.

It's also important that we know the history. Otherwise, we get racist -------- like #10.

The truth is, some were kidnapped right off the streets. Go into town, never come back.

#29 | Posted by horstngraben at 2024-10-25 08:38 PM

I don't think reparations applies when the government is already legally obligated.

Pres Biden is not "set to apologize" he did.

Biden apologizes for forced Native American boarding school policy that caused abuse and deaths of children
www.nbcnews.com

... The president's apology comes after a bombshell Interior Department investigation.

President Joe Biden delivered an apology Friday for a United States policy that forcibly separated generations of indigenous children from their families for more than 150 years and sent them to federally backed boarding schools for forced assimilation.

"I formally apologize as president of the United States of America for what we did," Biden said in strident remarks. "It's long overdue."

The president's apology, on tribal land at the Gila River Indian Reservation, came in the wake of a years-long investigation commissioned by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, a member of the Pueblo of Laguna and the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary. Haaland's grandparents were separated from their families because of the policy.

"We know that the federal government failed," Haaland said in emotional remarks before Biden was introduced.

"It failed to violate our languages, our traditions, our life ways. It failed to destroy us because we persevered," she added. ...

Back in the 1800s.

Most federally funded boarding schools closed in 1969.

There are a plenty of indians alive today for Biden to apologize to.

Y'all don't know your history. Not even the history of your own country.

But that's no excuse for being racist Trump dummies.

Whatever your personal relationship with indians is your deal.

My sister in law is a native American from the west ID and she looks like it with long black now graying hair and essentially mostly thinks like me.

Biden needed to ditch his divisive KKK ideology years ago as it was always phony and never good for Americans and unity. Democrats (top dogs who manipulate their underlings) tell us they are righteous when the truth is they are master manipulators and schemers and master baiters too who just like Biden never had a righteous bone in his perverted body. But then they have power that they use to coverup truth.

She is Cherokee and her grandmother was involved in that trail of tears move and on a reservation Black Foot? in eastern ID or Oklahoma. Im speaking out of my axx on this as my wife knows more than I and grew up with their family. This stuff is something only politicians looking for political advantage or divide worry about. I have black friends and like most Americans have never talked about either reparations or slavery. Most friends represent what MLK wanted (and not BLM or DEI). We don't even see race. My belief is only the devious slippery manipulating politicians like Kamala and Biden spend their pathetic lives foisting this hateful stuff on us hoping to create political edge or a race war. Such beliefs and people are worse than this nations worst enemy.
