House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner, R-Ohio, released an unusual statement Wednesday warning of a "serious national security threat" without providing additional details, pre-empting what the White House said was a planned briefing for congressional leaders.

Two sources familiar with deliberations on Capitol Hill said the intelligence has to do with the Russians wanting to put a nuclear weapon into space.

This is not to drop a nuclear weapon onto earth but rather to possibly use against satellites.

"It is very concerning and very sensitive," said one source, who called it "a big deal." ...

Russia probably already has satellite killers in orbit around the earth. Hell, the Chinese have landed on the moon and for some sneaky reason placed their infrastructure on the 'dark' side of the moon. Go figure? They also have been actively working on making satellite killers. The joke will be on them if they think they can take out Western satellites without taking out their own. Watch that movie Gravity and you'll get the picture.

I ask because the two are often used interchangeably.

The far side of the Moon never faces Earth, while the dark side of the Moon faces Earth during every New Moon phase.

High Altitude Nuclear Detonation (HAND) generates charged particles which get trapped in earth's magnetic field. These trapped charged particles oscillate between the Earth's magnetic north and south poles and survive for a very long time. These charged particles are catastrophic to satellites. Enhanced radiation environment (many times more than active solar flares generated effects) would degrade LEO assets quickly leading to their destruction.

It has been concluded that human control of radiation belt is possible and is one of the technique to protect LEO assets from natural (extreme solar activity) and manmade injection of high energy electrons (HAND). Radiation Belt Remediation (RBR) is termed for such man made action. When a VLF electromagnetic wave travels in its whistler mode in the magnetosphere, it can interact with the trapped energetic particles, altering the pitch angles of their motions. If a particle's pitch angle is decreased below the loss-cone angle, it will precipitate on its upcoming bounce.

GLONASS is probably designed with this eventuality in mind.
Learn how GLONASS was developed from a low-orbit system to a high-orbit system...
