Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Angela Chao, the billionaire sister-in-law of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, called a friend for help when she accidentally drove her Tesla Model X SUV into a pond on a Texas ranch Feb. 10 and was trapped inside as it sank. For several hours her friends, the ranch manager and paramedics could not break the car's windows.

An investigation into the vehicle determined that the Tesla's reinforced glass windows made it impossible for Chao to break them underwater, trapping her inside.

Angela Chao's sister, Elaine Chao, is Mitch McConnell's wife, and was U.S. Secretary of Transportation (2017-2021).

Presumably she would have had the ability to help ensure that cars were designed to protect occupants in such a situation. But that would have involved regulation. Which every GOPher knows is a bad thing. So I guess she can enjoy the rest of her existence knowing that her sister died for freedumb!

Because of their idiotic setup, its easy to not know whether youre in R or D in a tesla. Then you tap the gas, take off in the wrong direction and crash. Or sink into a pond.

They have no variable throttle control? Just full power one way or the other?

People panic then press the wrong pedal more vigorously, and it's more significant in cars that lull people into single pedal driving.

I bet if the car had manual window cranks she would still be alive.

Power windows fail and 'viola", you're dead. She could have simply rolled down the window to escape.

Sometimes,"upgrades" aren't.

Did Trump have Russia hack her tesla as a warning to Mitch that he'd better endorse Trump or else? I don't know. I'm just asking questions.

Do most of the cars in Russia still have manual windows?

If you don't get the windows down the second you hit the water in almost any car, it's going to be tough to get out.

Is that what happened?

Or did she just run out of air, asphyxiated in the Tesla. Seems more horrific, IMHO.

Isn't true of most automatics? I don't understand the logic of the push gear shift forward to go backwards, and backwards to go forwards.

I suspect this is historical.

Tesla doesn't obey best practices, but the biggest difference is that you physically move a lever that locks into a position indicating the direction you are going to go. People still get it wrong.

Sounds like either the car was non-compliant (doubtful) or the regulations need to be updated to address this issue.

#20 | Posted by censored at 2024-03-11 06:13 PM | Reply

Unless they make these windows out of some kind of futuristic glass, any paramedic, firefighter or police officer would/should have a glass breakage tool which would quickly break the window, so I'm not sure about the "several hours" claim.
Not defending Tesla, but electric windows in preety much any vehicle will fail once a vehicle is submerged, and the pressure differential makes opening the door impossible. I've worked a lot of submerged car deaths, many in shallow ponds.

If you ever find yourself in the water, IMMEDIATELY open the window or door, preferably while the car is still floating. Don't wait for the electronics to fail or the car to sink. If you do get submerged, once the pressure is equalized, the door will more easily open.

And lastly, get every member of your family a combination seatbelt cutter/window breakage tool to keep in their cars.

I have been retired for more than a few years, and just discovered that y knowledge on this topic is out of date. For decades, vehicles had laminated glass windshields (with plastic sandwiched between layers) and tempered side windows (which shatters into little cubes). I just learned that newer vehicles require laminated glass for side windows (It was unclear to me which windows and vehicles are affected). Window breakage devices (hammers and punches) won't break through laminated glass.

The reasoning behind this is that the laminated glass prevents ejections. I would say (based on my experience) that ejections are far more common than drownings, and that may be the determination the regulators made as well.

Ya know... the first ICE vehicles were rife with flaws when they were first made available. Fatalities abound... even to this day. Figuring out how to glass up a vehicle to make it safe has been daunting... from day one.

And one of the reasons my car has a sunroof. South Florida is criss-crossed with canals that have been a watery grave for more than a few. I learned from them.

TWIN

Sunroofs need power to open.
You might want to get one of these and keep it in your car wedged between the seat and console. You can break a window if needed. Or cut a seat belt. Also handy as an extra handle in the door latch for getting in and out if you ever needed it:

www.amazon.com

We keep one in our car in case we need it or someone else does. It came in handy a few years ago when some ------- left their dog in their car at Costco when it was 95 outside. It was barking like crazy and would have died since their windows were only cracked 1/2".
