Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

It's been a year or so since we've heard US officials discussing the potential ramifications of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. However, this week, the US Commerce Secretary was asked about this nightmare scenario, and she didn't mince her words, saying it would be "devastating."

More from the article...

... The alarming statement was made by Secretary Gina Raimondo during a hearing this week conducted by the House of Representatives, in which she was asked about the fallout from China seizing TSMC's operations [TSMC is a major semiconductor supplier]. "It would be absolutely devastating," she said, according to Reuters, without elaborating on when or how she thinks China would undertake such an act of aggression. She noted that the US currently buys 92% of its advanced chips from TSMC in Taiwan, so the impact of that supply being cut off cannot be understated. ...

... Asked at a U.S. House hearing about the impact, Raimondo said "it would be absolutely devastating," declining to comment on how or if it will happen, adding: "Right now, the United States buys 92% of its leading edge chips from TSMC in Taiwan." ...

Can you say, "supply chain issues?"

I knew you could.

China is going after Taiwan. (understatement)

And that presents at least two very significant problems for the United States. 92% of advanced chips come from TSMC.

Is China holding the ace card in this poker game?

LAMP @ #2

"What happens to the US tech industry if suddenly TSMC semiconductors are no longer available?"

President Biden is taking steps to waylay that situation.

In addition to the two new semiconductor plants underway right now in Mesa and Phoenix, Arizona, Congress has authorized an even bigger semiconductor plant in New Albany, Ohio which will employ about 10,000 people.

President Biden isn't going to leave the U.S. holding the bag if China invades Taiwan.

And if they don't, we're still ahead of the game.

@#3 ... Is this supposed to be new information? ...

Not to me.

What is a new concern to me is the apparent new aggressiveness of China towards Taiwan.

It seems that the long-term US position for Taiwan is being negated by China's current actions.

That's the new aspect that draws up the whole, will the US defend Taiwan question.

US commander: China is fast becoming more aggressive in region (April 2024)

... China is rapidly becoming more aggressive in its rhetoric and actions across Asia, the outgoing head of the US Indo-Pacific Command said, as Beijing turned up the heat on Washington just before Secretary of State Tony Blinken heads to the country for a high-stakes visit.

"We all need to understand that it's moving very fast," Admiral John Aquilino told reporters in Tokyo on Tuesday. ...

Taiwan will soon be a significant problem for the United States.

So I'll ask again.

What's the Deadman Switch to keep the Fabs from China's hands in the event of an invasion.

Do people just not talk about this very real problem?

That's been my concern.

Just talk.

As for me, I wonder what the future will show, are humans just a bunch of animals who are genetically required to band together under strongmen, always acquiring power and fighting to the death another group just over the horizon, or are we capable of learning to live under the rule of law and holding high the concept of peace toward all?
I think, if we had a time machine and came back in only three hundred years, we would see a high temp hellhole of a planet, always at war.

The alternstive is Trump would let China take Taiwan.

And that's worse.

And you're dumb if you can't figure that out.

Following Trump's Ukraine Model, Taiwan would be required to surrender unilaterally to China for "peace".

People have no understanding of freedom and liberty for others also have no clue just how vital Taiwan is to the US and the west in general. We are building factories for chips here but that isn't all there is too it. The same people saying it is none of our business will be the first ones whining and crying if Taiwan is attacked or worse taken by China.

This is sorta what I do for a living...but Russia had little to lose globally by invading Ukraine. Russia doesn't produce anything. Russia is not integrated in the global marketplace.

If Russia were to disappear from the face of the planet tomorrow, impact on the markets would be negligible.

That's not true with China. They are an integral part of the global marketplace. And they benefit immensely from that standing.

Maybe they would be willing to give it all away for the sake of capturing Taiwan...become another Russia or North Korea...but doing so seems pretty illogical to me.

Do Israel next!

That said, China has a really good conventional military force. They have nukes, but unlike Russia, their philosophy has been that nukes are intended for the purpose of national survival, whereas the Russians view nukes as a means to offset their conventional weaknesses.

A nuclear war with anyone is highly unlikely, but a nuclear war with Beijing is almost beyond reason, unless the US decided to invade China.

Russia on the other hand, while unlikely, is far more likely to use nukes because A) they want to challenge the west, B) they are severely overmatched by the west conventionally, and C) they think that Russia is a special country with special birthrights.

A challenge to any of these Russian assumptions might be met with a nuclear response because they have nothing else. Kinda like North Korea.

"Do Israel next!"

Sure.

Like Russia, I think the impact on global markets would be negligible if Israel were defeated by the Islamic Resistance.

I don't think I have anything in my home that's tagged as "made in Israel."

Do you?

That said, Gaza could disappear altogether. I'm not sure the needle on the NASDAQ or DJIA would move at all.

"Made in Israel": spyware. A lot of the Islamic theocracies would have a hard time suppressing their populations without Israel's Silicon Valley. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing ... jus saying.

China must assume the the US will defend Taiwan (although our recent investment in chip manufacturing sends mixed messages and undermines the "chip shield"). Taiwan is useless if the factories are destroyed, they can't replace the ASML machines or reverse engineer them. So to take Taiwan China has to Pearl Harbor our bases in Japan and Guam before they can invade. That's a nightmare scenario. A full-on war with China would have to be won quickly. In the long run they will out produce us in a drawn out conflict. More importantly their war time economy won't be hamstrung by partisan in-fighting and a significant proportion on the population wearing a kaffiyeh and moaning about our "Asian genocide".

On the the bright side nuclear winter will do wonders for global warming.

The earliest date for China being prepared to take Taiwan I have heard is 2027 with most in the 2035 range. If the western democracies can't get our crap together enough to prevent/mitigate that it will suck bad but frankly we will deserve it.

this is incorrect.

Russia has natural resources that the global market place depends upon.

The world economy relies on Russia more than Russia relies on the world.

Otherwise the sanctions wouldn't be broken and Russia would be starving.

This one too. At the plot where Foxconn abandoned building there:Biden Will Announce Microsoft's $3.3 Billion AI Datacenter In Wisconsin Today"On Same Site As Trump's Failed Foxconn Factory

The AI datacenter is being built "on the same land" where former President Donald Trump unveiled a $10 billion Foxconn factory that never came to be, the White House's fact sheet about the project mentions several times. Trump had referred to the factory as "the eighth wonder of the world" when he announced it in 2017 and promised it would create 13,000 jobs. The Taiwanese electronics manufacturer eventually scaled back its investment to $672 million, promising to create only 1,454 new jobs. Foxconn has no involvement in the Microsoft campus.

IF China were to invade Taiwan, they would suffer a much larger
price than they are likely counting on.

The problem is Xi, and his not settling for No. 2 country in the world.
He (like all power hungry men) wants to be No. 1, and to supplant America.

To which I would caution him. "Be careful what you wish for, for there is
a cost which comes with the title."
