Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, November 11, 2024

In the hours surrounding the election, searches for terms like "change my vote" and "are tariffs bad" surged, particularly in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. [Brett] Meiselas pointed to these searches as an indicator of the swift realization among voters about the potential consequences of Trump's trade policies. For example, many Trump supporters mistakenly believed that tariffs would financially impact foreign producers rather than U.S. businesses and consumers -- a misconception now being addressed as businesses adjust to expected cost increases.

The economic realities of tariffs are quickly setting in for small business owners, many of whom are directly affected. Meiselas shared the story of a Pennsylvania small manufacturing company whose employees learned that their holiday bonuses would be cut to prepare for the financial strain anticipated from increased import costs. The company's president reportedly had to explain to workers what tariffs are and how they function, revealing a widespread misunderstanding of the economic policy

... For example, many Trump supporters mistakenly believed that tariffs would financially impact foreign producers rather than U.S. businesses ...

That's because Pres-elect Trump said that tariffs are paid from by the foreign countries that export the goods.

Tariffs are paid for by the company that imports the goods when the goods hit the US border. Those importers pass the additional cost along, eventually reaching the consumers.

Too late for that.

That sounds like it could get expensive.

What if we compromise and cut minimum wage to zero? Or better yet, how about we bring back slavery?

That way, everyone is happy.*

*Everyone may not be happy.

I honestly didn't mean it as an insult. It was the teacher in me. If someone had turned in a paper with "seeth more" written on it, that's how I would have responded. I did hesitate to respond but for a less than admirable reason. Should I not point out the mistake and allow the poster to keep making it? Tempting, but then I decided against it.

Nah, like I said, it's the English teacher in me. Reflex action. I make a lot of typos on here and have a problem distinguishing between when to use effecting and affecting, for example, so if I screw up, feel free to correct me.

Aw.
So a I'll just call that a 'win/win/win' from my perspective ;-)
A kind gesture on Gal's part, a gentle prod to prevent future possible embarrassment for HomerJ (with a much reduced audience compared to the "Get A BRAIN!! MORANS" guy), and a bit of a self-own.

Right. Because complete supply chains exist in the US for a large number of goods.

And that's not even getting to whether or not the manufacturing capacity itself exists in the US.

Idiot.

I love it how people who follow a political movement based entirely on anger and perceived grievances almost immediately fall back on "seethe more" or "cope and seethe" or "cry more" in response to very basic comments about their stupidity.

They're clearly too stupid to even get how stupid they are.

You can bet when everything goes to hell, they'll be screeching the loudest about how bad politicians are and how they don't work for us blah blah blah...conveniently ignoring their role in creating the -------- they're complaining about.

The manufacturing capacity itself does NOT exist in the US. If nothing else - look at the unemployment rate.

Fun conversation with one of my clients:

One of my clients is just planning to move more production to Mexico. He's the lead for their tax group. They sell ATVs.

They opened a plant there years ago because places like Brazil have tariffs on the US and not Mexico. So they can sell to Brazil etc. from Mexico without worrying about tariffs.

He said "Trump puts tariffs on China and Mexico. China and Mexico puts tariffs on the US. We just produce more in Mexico for China and Mexico. Problem solved."

Their plan is simple. Lay off 15%-25% of the workers here, move the jobs to Mexico, and keep selling. Parts in Mexico won't be subject to tariffs. Exports won't suffer higher prices from tariffs. And US consumers will buy less because the price will go up here. So they'll need less workers here anyway.

Will they move in the jobs back if the tariffs end? "Why would we?," he said, "We'll have the factories fully working there, experienced workers, and logistics set up. It would cost more to move it back and there would be no upside."

Buy American. Tariff problem solved.

That would work if American companies made equivalent products in sufficient number to meet the demand. The other problem is capitalism aka greed. Instead of using tariffs to gain market share, I suspect many American manufacturers would simply raise their prices thereby negating the impact of the tariffs.

Anyone who ever took an economics course knows that tariffs are bad. Unless you're one of the small group who benefits from them at everyone else's expense.

But this is the Drudge Retort...there is certainly not a dearth of current or former econ students contributing to the discussions here.

Tariffs take you from a participant in the global marketplace to a participant in a national marketplace.

Which do you think provides more wealth creation? Which do you think creates more jobs.

#36 | Posted by madbomber at 2024-11-12 01:36 PM | Reply

I simply the American business community either at the major corporate level or mom & pop level will accept anything close to the types tariffs which Trump promoted on the campaign trail.

On a separate and ironic note, if MAGAts really dream of having Americans start buying American Made products they should brace themselves for both massive price increases AND a major increase in illegal workers entering the country. Cheers.
