President-elect Donald Trump on Monday promised massive hikes in tariffs on goods coming from Mexico, Canada and China starting on the first day of his administration. The move, Trump said, will be in retaliation for illegal immigration and "crime and drugs" coming across the border.

What?

Someone Trumpsplain this to me.

How does forcing Americans to pay more for goods effect illegal immigration?

Well apparently, we exported $28 Billion in vehicles to Canada in 2023 alone

Over $57B in machinery in 2023

Apparently over $422 Billion in 2022.

I am sure that Canada won't even consider a retaliatory tarriff.

I wonder how that will impact our economy?

And we went from 10% to 25%. Yeesh. He blames Mexico and Canada for their open borders when with the richest most powerful nation with a far greater population and HIM at the helm couldn't stop people from crossing... Priceless just freaking priceless and all the mouth breathers gobble it up.

So, so far Trumps plans are to crush the government (our own, not some foreign one),
to install ridiculously high tariffs on our two nearest neighbors and staunchest allies,
to gut Medicare, Medicaid, and probably to go after Social Security. In other words, to
squash the few remnants of the Middle Class in order to give the Rich, yet another huge
tax break...

Keep in mind that Pres-elect Trump is transactional, usually without any plan.

imo, he is setting things up for negotiations to begin when he takes office.

Who might benefit the most when the negotiations for a tariff deal begin with the countries involved? Well, who usually benefits from his negotiations?

Reading comprehension is not one of your skills eh?

He was referring to the phone call as a "good call" not trumpy's threats.

It was a "productive meeting" does not mean Trudeau approves of Trumpy's plan for tariff wars. He was just being polite to the diapered dotard.

Jebus you are a hateful idiot.

Enjoy your gloat while you can. There will be no "honeymoon period" for this president.

And no forgiveness for any crimes his supporters commit.

Biden should implement the tariffs right away. I see no downside. Republicans can't complain as this is what they want and Democrats will forget in four years. Win-Win.

Let the New American economy start immediately.

Shoot, Biden should do like Bush 1 did and invade a random country to leave the new president with a quagmire on day 1.

Dems lack imagination though

How about the release of 5000 Taliban prisoners and remove most of the US protection force to destabilize a nascent governing body in a barely stabilized country?

How about making a deal with the Saudi's to limit petroleum supply to jack up prices? Not only does this benefit his petrol supporters but has the added affect of increasing transportation costs which increases food costs (among others)?

How about hindering any kind of transition efforts to hobble the incoming administration?

All three of these were done by Trump 1.0 just a few months before the end of his term. In business, this is called a Poison Pill deal. President-elect might not be savvy enough to actually create a successful business deal, but he definitely knows how to screw one up.

My understanding is the proposed tariffs are conditional. Certain border enforcement requirements by Canada and Mexico will avoid the tariffs. I would think anyone on the left who isn't in favor of open borders would at least adopt a wait-and-see approach to this.

FTA:
" I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump,' Sheinbaum Pardo wrote on X.

We discussed Mexico's strategy on the migration phenomenon and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico.' "

So, that problem was already being handled by Mexico regardless of the GOP's disingenuous claims during their recent election campaigning.

Seems like just another example of President-elect Trump attempting to take credit for someone else's efforts.

From above intro:

Trump said, (tariffs) will be in retaliation for illegal immigration and "crime and drugs" coming across the border.

Come on people, the above is pure red herring BS. IMO, Trump and the GOP extremists plan to use any monies received from these tariffs to pay for new tax cuts for themselves and their rich donors.

Trump learned in round 1 that tariff monies from his China trade war could be redirected to payoff farmers for the effects of his trade war. This is the same but for his and his friends benefit.

Canada and Mexico would be justified levying retaliatory tariffs for smuggled firearms.
