They're calling for up to an inch of ice from freezing rain here in Charlotte. Not looking forward to the next few days.

Bottled water - check
Batteries - check
Snacks - check
Wine - double check

#3 My bride has been keeping an eye out on the weather in NC.

In the mountains the high is supposed to be 20-23 degrees F.

While the low is in the low single digits, with windchills pushing the feels-like to the negative, double-digit territory.

Brrrrrrrrr

I can deal with the cold, but that much ice will likely knockout power all over the place. That part will suck.

I'm worried about keeping my aquarium heated and the pumps running if the power drops for a long time. I just added three beautiful new juvenile discus fish to the tank.

I need to bite the bullet and get a Generac this year.

That's balmy, open jacket weather in MN. Currently -22, high today will be -11. Wind chill in Grand Marais today is -67.

LOL at the focus on the eastern US.

Meanwhile, tonight and tomorrow are going to be catastrophic for areas in Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee where they're predicting ice accumulations of up to an inch.

#7 Was in Colonial Williamsburg many years ago for their Grand Illumination (early December). Walking out of the hotel, thoroughly bundled up, I saw a man getting out of his car wearing nothing but shorts and a T shirt.

When I looked at his license plate it read "Minnesota."

As for me, I am a So Cal transplant and I think these temperatures are VERY rude, more suitable to curling up on the sofa, under a blanket and reading a good book. Just started reading The Boys of Riverside: A Deaf Football Team and a Quest for Glory. Once had a neighbor that taught at that school.

Southern states don't have the infrastructure to handle this kind of weather and most people in the South don't know how to drive in this type of weather.

From what I've been hearing on the news, the Texas power grid is expected to be under a lot of strain. Hopefully, it doesn't fail.

#21 | Posted by MSgt at 2026-01-23 04:30 PM | Reply | Flag:

Yeah, but see, this time we're expecting a foot of snow (give or take) from New Mexico to New England. Nearly 60 percent of the population is under a winter storm warning, the highest ever. Which, by definition, makes this novel.

I'm in a medium-sized city in north central Kentucky, which is expecting anywhere from 8 to 16 inches of snow, depending on whether sleet and freezing rain contaminate the snow total. Sixteen inches would break the all-time record for one snowstorm, and the records go back to just after the Civil War. So again, by definition, as novel as it gets.

But your snark is noted.

Dude. Ick doesn't even cover it. Back in 1994, my hometown had a low of -22F. After a huge snowstorm, we had icicles 40 feet long and two feet thick hanging on our three-story Victorian home. But we made it through with no significant damage. I miss that house!

There is no such thing as "winter"! Winter is a democratic hoax.

It's 70 degrees in my back yard today.

So that proves it.

#27 | Posted by REDIAL at 2026-01-24 06:23 PM | Reply | Flag:

Nope.

Well yeah, any 120-year-old house does need more insulation.

But the problem was that gutters and downspouts were clogged with leaves and other debris - which I was unaware of. Hey, it was a big old house, with lots to take care of, and I'd never had this problem before. Once the gutters and downspouts filled with water, they froze and overflowed, freezing incrementally down the outside as well as the inside in the unprecedented cold as they did so. Some people lost an entire wall of their house when thousands of pounds of ice pulled it down. We did not!

But anyway, this was an extremely anomalous event for my part of the world.

That level of ice is brutal.

The difference between ice and snow is that an inch of ice usually has the same water content of ten inches of snow.

But an inch of ice can accumulate and stay on trees and wires. While ten inches of snow will not accumulate on trees and wires.

Be prepared and stay safe.

The current NWS "Forecaster discussion" for the area ...

forecast.weather.gov

... ajor winter storm will begin materializing this morning as deep moisture overruns the arctic air over the region. Regional radar mosaic is showing increasing returns off to the west, but the low level dry air will several more hours to saturate.

Light snow should begin reaching the surface from west to east across the area around 5 to 9 am.

The intensity will gradually increase with conditions deteriorating across the area quickly as the snow falls with surface temperatures in the teens, which is quite unusual for this area.

Temperatures will increase slightly in the afternoon with coastal areas rising into the low and mid 20s.

The snow will become moderate to heavy mid to late morning as mid level frontogenesis increases and becomes coupled with the right entrance region of a departing polar jet streak over northern New England.

The mid level thermal forcing peaks in the afternoon with impressive 850-700 mb frontogenesis and an overall deep layer of vertical velocities.

There is a likelihood of an intense band of heavy snow moving from south to north early-mid afternoon.

This is the period with the greatest potential of snowfall rates between 1-2 inches per hour. ...

It currently looks like Connecticut will have a snow day on Monday.

While NYC may not.

CT won't join NYC in holding school online on Monday if closed: 'Kids should be kids on snow days'
www.ctinsider.com

... As Connecticut prepares for a powerful storm predicted to impact the region beginning Sunday, students are waiting with bated breath to see whether they will luck out and get a snow day on Monday.

But with nearby New York City opting to pivot to pandemic-era remote learning instead of canceling classes if needed on Monday, what will Connecticut schools do if the weather is bad?

Will students get to enjoy a traditional snow day of sledding, building snowmen and warming up with a mug of hot chocolate? Or will they join New York City students in waking up early to log into classes?

From Greenwich to Vernon, school leaders across Connecticut say they do not hold virtual learning days when they have to shut down their school buildings due to unsafe weather conditions.

"Closed for the day when it's a snow day! We like old-fashioned snow days!" Westport Superintendent Thomas Scarice said when asked how the district handles snow days. ...
