The founders were smart enough to compromise in order to try and create a more perfect Union. It's just too bad we evolved into uncompromising idiots.

Southern states feared a direct popular vote, as a large portion of their population was enslaved and could not vote. By tying electoral votes to Congress's total representation (which included the "three-fifths compromise" that counted enslaved people), the system gave the South more power.

Since slavery and of course racism is declared OVER in America and the South definitely does not need more power (they obviously haven't used it very well) we dont need it anymore.
