Jerry Seinfeld reflected on the state of comedy ahead of his 70th birthday -- and he thinks modern-day showbiz has lost its sense of humor ... all 'cause of politically correct culture.

"JS says people need comedy, and yet ... they're not getting their daily dose in the 21st century -- especially in 2024 -- when they turn on their televisions to wind down at night.

While reminiscing on the days of old, Jerry says people used to be able to come home and depend on something funny being on TV -- whether it was 'Cheers,' 'M.A.S.H.,' or whatever else ... and they could bank on a laugh. Nowadays, however, Jerry says that's totally absent.

He blames woke-ism, as it were, and "PC crap" for this ... which he says has torpedoed creativity, and made everyone worried about jokes offending certain groups. He also says scripts are getting reviewed by so many different parties now, it waters everything down."

"Good old Jerry ... cantankerous as ever. Happy birthday!"

Have you ever seen his act in Vegas. It's vulgar and disgusting. That's where I saw the real Jerry Seinfeld and stopped watching his TV show.

Seinfeld is correct and is saying what Mel Brooks, amongst others, have said before:

"Esteemed comedy director Mel Brooks has spoken about how "stupidly politically correct" sensibilities will eventually lead to the "death of comedy". "It's not good for comedy. Comedy has to walk a thin line, take risks," he said, according to The Telegraph. "Comedy is the lecherous little elf whispering in the king's ear, always telling the truth about human behaviour."
Brooks added how political correctness would almost certainly prevent Blazing Saddles from being made today."

A minority of boring, mentally-fragile people looking for things to be offended by and expecting the rest of us to walk on egg shells. Eff 'em.

It is a modern day paradox that one can hear from all of these people who have been cancelled!

"No Jerry Seinfeld, the extreme left' hasn't killed comedy

The comedian's claim that wokeness is the reason why comedy is no longer as funny is lazy " and inaccurate"

Being re-butted may or may not be funny.

Maybe political comedy has run its course and that you have run out of new material.

apparently seinfeld doesnt think cappelle or burr are edgy enough?

It's pretty easy to not care about political correctness when a woman half your age is slobbering your knob.

Or so I've heard.

Is that your definition of woke? Jerry clearly doesn't know what woke means.

Do you?

Offs Larry David had episodes about a black lawn jockey, the college admission scandal, larry using a woman for sex to get an ordinance changed, and what was it last year he had a trans man's penis knocking ---- over.

So, no comedy isn't dead, it just takes some intelligence to write funny jokes that aren't regressive.

It absolutely has lost it's sense of humor. I don't disagree with you there are ways to do it but everyone is so afraid of offending anyone. Larry David isn't. But his jokes are self deprecating most of the time and dare I say often they actually are regressive.

Being afraid of offending people is a good thing my friend. That forces you to be clever. It is easy to say slurs and punch down on the marginalized. The easy joke is to insult a trans person, I could not imagine a good joke that insults a marginalized person/group while not having the marginalized group in on the joke.

FWIW yes something like Blazing Saddles couldn't be made now, but that has less to do with the humor but the context and times they are set in. That type of humor is not funny in today's world, while it was and is funny in context of the 70s. A black man mocking the "step and fetch it" stereotype does not hit the way it hit in the 70s because African Americans are viewed differently today.

"Everybody needs friends. I had it rough when I was a kid. Never got to go to camp. My mom thought I'd get embarrassed undressing in front of little boys, but I've changed, 'cause I kind of like it now." Bob Saget, 1984

Anthony Jeselnik isn't political in his comedy. Deadpan offensive (I've seen him unable to control a smile once in hours of material), but nothing to do with politics

I agree. You can't joke about Israel being led by Nazis and enabling genocide without being called a "Hamas Lover" and professionally canceled over accusations of antisemitism.

What is a poor, Ivy League graduate who only wants to pursue his love of comedy and urban camping to do?

I don't get it. I think you're brand of humor may be too sophisticated for me. Maybe you can draw cartoons for the New Yorker.

Mediocre but highly irritating standup who ended up with a great sitcom. I so don't give a crap about what the guy says.

What has Seinfeld ever done that's remotely edgy.

Seinfeld? It was on prime time network TV and not the upstart Fox network either.

The most controversial thing Seinfeld did was stop making more episodes of Seinfeld.

@#1 ... He blames woke-ism, as it were, and "PC crap" for this ... which he says has torpedoed creativity ...

Yet another self-centered Hollywood type who thinks their political opinion is important.

@#26 ... not the upstart Fox network either. ...

That upstart Fox network spawned the Married With Children comedy.

Here's how that show is described on my TiVo...

...The lowbrow hit about the Bundys, TV's first family of raunch, made the new Fox network a player

The long-running series [11 seasons - LL] prospered despite threats of sponsor boycotts and the ire of some critics, who objected to the show's offbeat, sometimes coarse humor. ...

Turn on ANY episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and tell me comedy is dead or it is impossible to tell "edgy" jokes.

What has-beens like Seinfeld want is for comedy to never change, well, what is the deal with not being able to change?
