For starters, many thanks for the follow-up comment.
But, yes, I think Pres Biden was a reference.

If "republicans" wanted someone younger than Trump, then why did they nominate Trump?

Biden was the reference.

[italics theirs]
... That makes absolutely no sense
A reference to what? The younger republicans they could have made their official nominee against an old Biden ...
And that is, and has been my point.
For the RNC, Pres Biden was the Democratic Pres presumptive nominee.
And, for the RNC, the Republicans acted in response to that scenario. To their now chaos in responding to the results of it.
And, continuing in my opinion, in doing so, the Republicans fell for, hook, line and sinker, Pres Biden's strategy of waiting until after the RNC to announce his stepping down.
As a result of that major blunder by the GOP strategists, we now seem to have a Democratic presumptive nominee, VP Harris. One which seems to have caught the GOP strategists off-guard. (aside: if they cannot seem to handle this type of strategic assault, how well will they do if they win the Oval Office?)
We also seem to have a Trump campaign that has been out-maneuvered by Pres Biden, and now seems to be struggling (almost humorously at times) in their response to current events.
