DOJ Review and Evaluation Tulsa Race MassacreOn the night of May 31, 1921, a violent attack by as many as 10,000 white Tulsans destroyed the thriving Black community of Greenwood, Oklahoma -- a prosperous area often referred to as "Black Wall Street" The attack, which lasted into the afternoon of June1, was so systematic and coordinated that it transcended mere mob violence. What men murdered hundreds of Black resident, burned businesses and homes to the ground, and left survivors without resources or recourse. In the aftermath, authorities failed to offer meaningful help, and efforts to seek justice through the courts foundered.

The Tulsa Race Massacre was not committed by an uncontrolled mob but was the result of "a coordinated, military-style attack" by white citizens, the Justice Department said in a report. It was the first time the U.S. government has given an official account of the 1921 massacre of Black residents.

... The DOJ released a 126-page report Friday following a four-month investigation into the attacks, which took place between May 31 and June 1 in 1921. In addition to the murders and property destruction, victims' money and personal property were stolen, and they were not provided with any aid.

The report concluded that the 1921 one-week investigation done by an agent of the Justice Department's Bureau of Investigation, the precursor to the FBI, was unfounded as it did not include key details about the violence, the victims and the perpetrators and implied Black men were responsible for the massacre. ...

DoJ Press Release ...

Justice Department Announces Results of Review and Evaluation of the Tulsa Race Massacre
www.justice.gov

... The Justice Department issued a report today on the Tulsa Race Massacre. The report documents the department's findings, made during its review and evaluation of the Tulsa Race Massacre, undertaken pursuant to the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crimes Act. The Civil Rights Division previously announced it was undertaking this review during a Cold Case Convening held on Sept. 30, 2024.

"The Tulsa Race Massacre stands out as a civil rights crime unique in its magnitude, barbarity, racist hostility and its utter annihilation of a thriving Black community," said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division. "In 1921, white Tulsans murdered hundreds of residents of Greenwood, burned their homes and churches, looted their belongings, and locked the survivors in internment camps.

Until this day, the Justice Department has not spoken publicly about this race massacre or officially accounted for the horrific events that transpired in Tulsa. This report breaks that silence by rigorous examination and a full accounting of one of the darkest episodes of our nation's past.

This report lays bare new information and shows that the massacre was the result not of uncontrolled mob violence, but of a coordinated, military-style attack on Greenwood. Now, more than 100 years later, there is no living perpetrator for the Justice Department to prosecute.

But the historical reckoning for the massacre continues. This report reflects our commitment to the pursuit of justice and truth, even in the face of insurmountable obstacles.

We issue this report with recognition of the courageous survivors who continue to share their testimonies, acknowledgement of those who tragically lost their lives and appreciation for other impacted individuals and advocates who collectively push for us to never forget this tragic chapter of America's history." ...

Ryan Walters showed his repug bona fides by saying racism didn't play a part in the Tulsa Massacre.

More from that cited article...

... Oklahoma's Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters denied on Thursday that race was the main reason behind the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921 that saw up to 300 people killed and left thousands of Black residents displaced.

Tulsa was known at the time for its thriving African American community in the Greenwood District where Black professionals ran multiple businesses. Because the business district was booming and thriving, it was often referred to as the Black Wall Street.

Walters was invited by the Cleveland County Republican Party to speak at the Norman Central Library when he had a heated exchange with attendees. The superintendent first spoke about his policies when he made remarks that some attendees found inappropriate and left the room in response, according to local news station Fox 25.

"It doesn't matter how much the radical left attacks me," Walters said during the public forum. "It doesn't matter how much the teachers union spends against me. I will never stop speaking truth." ...

So, the GOP is continuing to try to rewrite history, apparently continuing to show it has not a clue what "truth" is.

Blasters - Dark Night (1985)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

...
Hot air hangs like a dead man
From a white oak tree
People sitting on porches
Thinking how things used to be
...
The neighborhood was changing
Strangers moving in
A new boy fell for a local girl
When she made eyes at him

[Verse 3]
She was young and pretty
No stranger to other men
Open doors were being locked at night
And old lines drawn again

[Chorus]
I thought these things didn't matter anymore
I thought all that blood had been shed long ago
Dark night, it's a dark night

[Verse 4]
He took her to the outskirts
He pledged his love to her
They thought it was their secret
But someone knew where they were

[Verse 5]
He held her so close
He asked about her dreams
When a bullet from a passing car
Made the young girl scream
...
I thought these things didn't happen anymore
I thought all that blood had been shed long ago
Dark night, it's a dark night
Dark night, it's a dark night

My Okiehomie native neighbors tell me that the 1921 race massacre was not something they were told about in school. Maybe up Tulsa way things are different, but here in OKC few knew about this incident until two years before the centenary.

As for Ryan Walters, despite many Okies wondering how this guy got elected in the first place, he will probably be re-elected, because of the high percentage who vote straight MAGA Party ticket, and the fact that Okiehomie has perhaps the worst voter turnout level of any US state. Settlers--yes. They settle for anything or anyone here...

Interesting how I never learned about this in school and didn't know it happened until I watched THE WATCHMEN on HBO.

History is written by the victors.

Someday our great grandkids will have no idea that Jan 6th happened after the fascists remove it from our collective minds.

This is pretty much what BOAZ has in mind for Blue Cities.

We can deny it, but truth is, he has gone out of his way to communicate that to us.

This kind of situation is what MAGA is spoiling for.

But you probably know that already...

Times were different then and whites ruled the nation pretty much unquestioned. White supremacists wrote the original history and effectively buried this until about 20 years ago or so. They continue to deny and responsibility or culpability and assign blame to the victims. No matter what political party the original actors were a member of, today's deniers are all on the side of one party.

I mean with all the white outrage over the BLM protests and yes indeed even some rioting (started by white supremacists (tried and convicted)) you would think there would be bigger out rage over this murderous and apparently organized attack on a town. But wait, those were whites doing that... ~snark

Look it wasn't any of my relatives doing all this stuff. I know that for a fact, but if it was I don't think I would have an issue admitting it even.

It's chilling to think about how many people got away with all the lynchings and cruel racist attacks back in the days (sometimes large crowds would show up and cheer), and then wonder about how many of their descendants are aware of what their grandfathers and grandmothers did. How many of the later generations were able to unlearn the racism that was most certainly taught to them by their violently racist families?

Not being a native you may not realize this.

If your parents and grandparents are all from here then you have blood on your hands. (Yes even the Native Americans.) We all come from a violent greedy gold lusting bloody slaver past.

All of America has blood on its hands. Democrats are trying to come to grips with this. Republican seem to want to deny it and try and change history and pretend America is a bunch of peaceful virgins.

This particular agitprop is pointless and mute. Try another.

Nixon:
Richard Nixon is credited for having a strong record on foreign policy, but his record on domestic policy " especially on Civil Rights at home is often overlooked. During his years as vice president under Dwight Eisenhower, he sought to ensure minorities " especially African Americans " weren't discriminated against in federal contracts. He also worked with Congress to spearhead the Civil Rights Act of 1957, sweeping legislation and a precursor to the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965.
