Steve Benen: The GOP's star witness in the House Republicans' impeachment crusade against President Joe Biden "admitted that officials associated with Russian intelligence were involved in passing a story about" Hunter Biden. Dem. Rep. Dan Goldman noted via social media that the "only remaining question" is whether GOP lawmakers "were witting or unwitting agents" of the Russian government.

At this point, it's clear what House Republicans should say. Members such as House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer could begin by apologizing for their role in this debacle. They could then announce that they've decided to wrap up their pointless and evidence-free impeachment crusade, recommitting themselves to a more constructive, reality-based approach to governing.

The GOP members could conclude by issuing a plea to federal prosecutors, asking that they not launch an investigation into Republicans' reliance on lies from foreign intelligence services.

Alas, that's decidedly not what the impeachment crusaders had to say after their case collapsed.

Goldman added that the evidence now suggests that Republicans "are willing to be used as assets of Russian intelligence," concluding that "the real danger" in Congress is members "operating at the behest of Russian intelligence and Vladimir Putin."

It's really telling that the Trump-appointed prosecutor is the one now confirming what's been obvious since this charade started: The Hunter Biden corruption scandal was an invention of Russian intelligence swallowed hook, line, and sinker by the GOP, who've now beclowned themselves as little more than sycophantic pawns doing Russia's bidding in mainstreaming disinformation.

Looks like it's time to investigate the investigators again - this time with the Trump-chosen prosecutor and House Republicans getting the treatment instead.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say people like Jordan are actual Russian assets who are consciously attempting to bring down the United States as we now understand it for their perceived personal advantage. We already know that Jordan played a part in the late coup, so that's no stretch really.

The house GOP is witless.

The senate with Rand Paul, JD Vance and Ted Cruz isn't far behind.

Period.

I've never seen a greater collection of easily fooled dupes in my entire life.

Dementia Don has sold america out to Russia and he commands these traitors to jump and they say "How high?"

like Jordan are actual Russian assets

That's a pretty solid limb.

This all began on July 4, 2018 when members of the house and senate spent the holidy in Moscow.

Could they be more blatant?

"GOP Congressman Says Colleagues 'Were Warned' About Ex-FBI Informant

Republican Congressman Ken Buck said that House members "were warned" that allegations leveled by an ex-FBI informant regarding President Joe Biden's business dealings may not be credible.

Speaking to CNN's Kaitlan Collins Wednesday evening, Buck pushed back on impeachment efforts by his Republican colleagues in light of the charges against Smirnov, claiming that lawmakers "were warned at the time that we received the document outlining this witness' testimony ... that the credibility of this statement was not known."

"And yet people, my colleagues, went out and talked to the public about how this was credible and how it was damning and how it proved President Biden's complicity in receiving bribes," Buck said. It appears to absolutely be false and to really undercut the nature of the charges."

Well, there's a vote for witting Russian agents.

Eberly, are they witting or unwitting?

Some of both. Jordan was willing.
As were several others. Others just bought
into what they wanted to believe.

Yes, the party is filled with stupidity.
But they are equally filled with incredible
amounts of partisanship, the most I've ever seen.

"are they witting or unwitting?"

Does it matter?

Trump tells them to keep digging.

Has everyone forgot that these traitors were asking trump for pardons at the end of his criminal administration?

Of course they know they're spreading lies and russia is helping them. They think getting help from russia to topple democracy is better than governing alongside democrats.

The GQP is nothing more than a propaganda arm of Putin these days.

It would be interesting to investigate these folks and see how much of the money they took in is actually tied to illegal Russian donations. Or if those making significant contributions to them are known supporters of Russia. Money is speech so it is okay if they took the money (unless it is illegal money) but it should be publicly examined so we can see where their loyalty actually is and their intelligence. i.e. Are they that witless or bought and paid for by Putin?

Russia knows that if Rs are in power they win the war in Ukraine. So they are going to funnel boatloads of money and trolls to Rs.

Christopher Steele
@Chris_D_Steele

So with former FBI source Smirnov's US indictment, for peddling Kremlin disinformation about Joe Biden, the real Russia hoax' turns out to have been attempts by MAGA Republicans to impeach the president based on it. The only question now is if this was witting collusion or not.

The reaction of MAGA Republicans like Jim Jordan to the Smirnov case has been to demand we should be indicted likewise for our 2016 Trump Dossier. But multiple court cases and US investigations since have proved we simply told the truth and did our duty by reporting in our intel

We need Garland to act or tender bus resignation. This requires a special prosecutor to gather the coms and bank accounts of these traitors to find out if this was their stupidity in their slavish service to the stupidest and most corrupt person to ever hold the WH, or if there was something criminal here and they truly are traitors to this country. With Ken Buck's comments, it sounds like a Hunter Biden and POTUS lawsuit could bankrupt Comer Pyle, Jacket Off Gym, and a bunch more of these Quislings.

Is the House GOP 'Witting Or Unwitting' Agents of Russia?

Of course they are.

The discredited FBI informant has told the FBI back in 2023 that Russia tapped phone calls to get compromising information about prominent US people.

Russia Intercepts U.S. Phone Calls in Bid to Influence 2024 Election
www.newsweek.com

... Russia has intercepted the phone calls of several prominent Americans and could use the information as kompromat, or blackmail, during the upcoming presidential election, according to a Department of Justice court memo citing former FBI contact Alexander Smirnov as its source. ...

Based on conversations with Smirnov, the court filing states: "During this meeting with Russian Official 1, Russian Official 1 claimed that another individual, Russian Official 4, the head of a particular unit of a Russian Intelligence Service, ran an intelligence operation at a "club" located at a particular hotel.

"Smirnov told the FBI Handler that the Russian Intelligence Service intercepted cell phone calls made by guests at the hotel. The Russian Intelligence Service intercepted several calls placed by prominent U.S. persons the Russian government may use as 'kompromat' in the 2024 election, depending on who the candidates will be. ...

So, is this real?

If so, is it the reason for the apparent Putin Caucus in the House?

Unwitting, of course.
But no doubt some of them are bribed indirectly from Russia via their PAC.
Citizens United, how that continues to come back to ruin this nation.
