Hi Redial: Years ago I used to drive to Toronto or Montreal with just a driver's license. About 1984, my friends drove up as I slept in the backseat. When I woke up, I was already passed the border. The CBSA officer didn't bother to wake me. Now we are slowly creeping towards a DMZ at our northern border. Thanks Kim Jong Trumpf!

Funny anecdote (true):

In the 1960's, country singer Faron Young's tour bus driver took speed and drove all the way from Key West to 20 miles south of the North Dakota border, without sleeping, in February.

They pulled the bus over and switched drivers to get across the border. The driver, a southerner who was "country as homemade soap," crawled in his bunk.

When they got to the border, an immigration officer boarded the bus. He woke the driver, who was sound asleep in his bunk, and shined a flashlight in his face.

"Sir, do you have any ID?," he asked. The driver (remember he was a hick) replied, "'bout what?" "ID" being a hillbilly shortcut for "idea."

The immigration officer proceeded to ask if there were drugs, illegal alcohol, etc on the bus, with negative replies.

Still peeved, the immigration officer asked, "sir, is there pornography on the bus?"

The driver replied, "do you see a record player ANYWHERE on this bus?!!" They refused entry to the hick tour bus driver.

They had to turn the bus around. That hick driver had to spend 2 weeks in a little motel in the middle of nowhere North Dakota (temps below zero during the day, -40 at night) while Young and the band toured Canada. The only supplies he had were a bottle of whiskey and all the snacks that were on the bus. No restaurants or stores nearby.
