U.S. officials say that strikes conducted on three key Iranian nuclear sites have devastated its nuclear program, but independent experts analyzing commercial satellite imagery say the nation's long-running nuclear enterprise is far from destroyed.

"In particular Lewis says the strike doesn't seem to have touched Iran's stocks of highly enriched uranium.

"Today, it still has that material and we still don't know where it is," he says.

"I think you have to assume that significant amounts of this enriched uranium still exist, so this is not over by any means," agrees David Albright, the president of the Institute for Science and International Security, which has closely tracked Iran's nuclear program for years."

()

"I think the purpose of the attack was to take out centrifuges and infrastructure and they feel they accomplished that," Albright says.

But as evidence that the strikes may have missed the uranium stocks, both Albright and Lewis point to commercial satellite imagery from the days before the strike.

The images show trucks at two key sites " Isfahan and Fordo. The trucks appear to be sealing tunnels that serve as entrances to underground facilities used to store uranium, possibly in anticipation of an American attack."

... but independent experts analyzing commercial satellite imagery say the nation's long-running nuclear enterprise is far from destroyed. ...

From what I've been hearing and reading, it will be a few days to a week or so before the extent of the damage can be assessed, even then, I doubt if the real status of the deep-underground facilities will be known.

And if Iran has moved the highly-enriched uranium offsite to different locations (as has been reported), well, then the time to enrich that uranium is not lost.

What may have been lost were the facilities to enrich more uranium.

imo, at this point, lots of speculation (including mine) and little factual information.

fwiw, I heard this parody song on the area college station this afternoon. I remember first hearing it back in 1980, during the hostage crisis, when it was released. ...

Vince Vance & The Valiants - Bomb Iran (1980)
www.youtube.com

It is sung to the melody of Barbara Ann by the Regents (and covered by the Beach-Boys).

Wow, lyrics are available ...

genius.com

...
Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran
Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb
Bomb Iran
Let's take a stand
Bomb Iran
Our country's got a feelin'
Really hit the ceilin', bomb Iran
Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran

Went to a mosque, gonna throw some rocks
Tell the Ayatollah, "Gonna put you in a box!"
Bomb Iran. Bomb, bomb, bomb
Bomb Iran
Our country's got a feelin'
Really hit the ceilin', bomb Iran
Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran

Ol' Uncle Sam's gettin' pretty hot
Time to turn Iran into a parking lot
Bomb Iran. Bomb, bomb, bomb
Bomb Iran
Our country's got a feelin'
Really hit the ceilin', bomb Iran
Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran
...

As parody songs go, that one's pretty intense.

Yet, it almost made BillBoard's Top 100 back then.

... Iran's nuclear program began in the 1950s under the Pahlavi dynasty with US support. It expanded in the 1970s with plans for power reactors, paused after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, and resumed secretly during the 1980s Iran--Iraq War.

In the 1990s, Iran pursued a full nuclear fuel cycle and acquired centrifuge technology through illicit networks, including ties with Pakistan and North Korea.[citation needed] Undeclared enrichment sites at Natanz and Arak were exposed in 2002, and Fordow, an underground fuel enrichment site, was revealed in 2009. ...

60% is legal.

How close were they to a nuclear bomb, Jeff?

Why did they restart enrichment after Trump ripped up Obama's Iran Deal?

Having a nuclear program is not the same as being close to having a nuclear bomb. Nor does it mean they are actually going to complete enrichment for a bomb.

But hey, I get it. You need to back Trump no matter what!

Here are some facts.

Iran entered into an agreement with the WORLD to stop enriching uranium

This was overseen by inspectors and was working

------- unilaterally pulled out of the agreement

The remainder of the world stayed in the agreement, Iran continued to abide by it

------- assassinates, without provocation, Iran's top general

Iran, fearing attack by Israel and realizing the US is untrustworthy ramps up enrichment, slowly

Hamas commits the 10/7 atrocity

Israel uses that atrocity as a pretext to expedite the genocide against the Palestinians.

Israel attacks and continues to attack Gaza despite their being no justification for the continued assault, committing countless war crimes

Israel arms settlers in the West Bank who commit atrocities agains the Palestinians and the Israelis seize more of the West Bank

Israel invades and occupies a part of Lebanon.

------- starts negotiations with Iran

Israel attacks Iran, blowing up the negotiations-again why should Iran trust any diplomatic effort from the US

The US cuts Europe and other countries from any diplomacy with Iran, in fact, embarrasses Europe leaders who were meeting with Iranian officials when the US attacks Iran

The US attacks on Iran accomplish next to nothing as it is beyond stupid to think Iran kept any significant assets in an obvious target

------- once again lies to Iran saying they have 2 weeks to negotiate and he attacks illegally

these the facts

All that has been accomplished is the near assurance that Iran will develop a bomb in secret like NK did, thus ensuring their continued existence as a state.

"What's all this about Trump bragging about the success of the Iran strike before ANY results were in?"

Yeah, just like Biden and liberals across the country touted how great the Afghan withdrawal was...until a few days later all of a sudden everyone found out how great it was not. And there are many other examples of Dems being hypocrites, which is pointed out all the time.

Anyone who trusts the government on either side is an idiot considering these kinds of statements are made by both sides all the freaking time. And the hypocrisy is just absurd. Also additionally, if any of you actually go back and read what you post and do not see the hypocrisy, please understand that you are missing something and could use some training on how to adequately be objective. It's not a bad thing. In fact, self-improvement is a VERY liberal trait and self-help books and all that are considered progressive. So you are actually doing a liberal thing by finally admitting you are a hypocrite and taking steps to correct that behavior. If you don't, just know you are part of the problem and nothing you say or do will ever actually progress this country, it will only add more argue fodder that both sides can waste time on instead of actually fixing problems.

Strike Set Back Iran's Nuclear Program by Only a Few Months, U.S. Report Says
www.nytimes.com

... A preliminary classified U.S. report says the American bombing of Iran's nuclear sites sealed off the entrances to two of the facilities but did not collapse their underground buildings, according to officials familiar with the findings.

The early findings conclude that the strikes over the weekend set back Iran's nuclear program by only a few months, the officials said.

Before the attack, U.S. intelligence agencies had said that if Iran tried to rush to making a bomb, it would take about three months. After the U.S. bombing run and days of attacks by the Israeli Air Force, the report by the Defense Intelligence Agency estimated that the program was delayed less than six months.

Former officials said that any rushed effort by Iran to get a bomb would be to develop a relatively small and crude device. A miniaturized warhead would be far more difficult to produce, and it is not clear how much damage to that more advanced research has taken place.

The findings suggest that President Trump's statement that Iran's nuclear facilities were obliterated was overstated, at least based on the initial damage assessment. ...
