Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Trump is looking to reverse a 1960s-era policy/precedent that prevented people who pose a risk to themselves or the public, and are living on the streets, from being institutionalized. Here's the bombshell line: " ... seek, in appropriate cases, the reversal of Federal or State judicial precedents and the termination of consent decrees that impede the United States' policy of encouraging civil commitment of individuals with mental illness who pose risks to themselves or the public or are living on the streets and cannot care for themselves in appropriate facilities for appropriate periods of time."

President Trump wants to make it easier to forcibly hospitalize people experiencing homelessness for longer periods of time. The executive order says shifting those with mental illness and addiction into long-term institutions will restore public order.

So when are the righties going to take issue with the federal government forcing its way into local matters in such heavy handed, authoritarian ways?

I would have thought, based on y'all's past statements, that a POTUS unilaterally making changes at a local level by decree would have been a big no no...

More of the GOP's famed "small government."

Where's the money coming from to rehab these facilities and bring them back on line?

#5,

Out of the pockets of what used to be called the middle class back when we actually had a middle class.

California Spent $24 Billion on homelessness Since 2019, yet it still increased (181,000)

I suspect it all went to NGO's and their salaries, how about we start there.

I am not exactly sure about this idea, but complaining about where the money comes from is pretty funny.

You mean we aren't being milked now? Let me say that again $24Billion for homelessness since 2019 just in CA.

Across the country I imagine it's over $100Billion. for what maybe 500,000 homeless?

Selling off the National Parks should cover the cost.

I see. The Republican cure to homelessness is mass incarceration.

This will be done as well as Bushes war in Iraq.

The concept may be sound but it will be done so badly no one will care.

Gonna have to raise tariffs and do some more bailouts!
P.S. We'll pay for the bailouts with more tariffs.

WHAT?!

An area where EVERYONE wants to live has HIGH housing prices causing homelessness for underpaid people?!

Who would have guessed?!

You genius, OneIronPedo, you figured it out!

So how do you make places to live much cheaper in California? Remember, no socialism now!

And no, they didn't spend $24 billion on homelessness. A huge chunk of that went to making sure people did not go homeless through housing assistance.

Pres Trump - Apr. 13, 2020 - ""When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total. And that's the way it's gotta be. It's total.""

www.theatlantic.com

...In a rally-briefing lasting more than two hours this past Monday afternoon, Donald Trump issued a royalist view of executive power not once but several times. (Which is of course his tendency, with any point he wants to make.) You can see one of the clearest instances in this C-SPAN video starting around time 46:40. Trump is asked what he would do if he decided to "open up" the economy, but state governors didn't agree. What would be his authority in that case?

"When you say my authority -- it's the president's authority. It's not me.

"When somebody is the president of the United States, the authority is total. And that's the way it's gotta be. It's total."

Several things were remarkable about this statement.

"We have a mental illness and homeless problem in this country. I don't know what is the best approach"

Based on the immorality and sexual deviancy of Republicans and their voters, presumably gas chambers and ovens for the older homeless, and personal harems for select politicians for the young ones.

Trump is so stupid, he doesn't understand the difference between someone seeking political asylum versus the outdated term, insane asylum/mental asylum. Go ahead, do a little research. See how often he gets them confused.

Remember how for the last 30 years Democrats have blamed the exploding mentally ill homeless problem on Reagan defunding mental institutions?

Remember how they never mentioned it was the ACLU that was the real reason by fighting against involuntary institutionalization?

Now, we are back to the truth of this - Trump will finally start to care for these people and get them off the street and the Democrats will fight it tooth and nail.

It is just like immigration - Biden said his hands were tied without congress - and then Trump solved the problem in about a week. The same will happen now with the homeless crisis - and deep blue -------- cities will be able to save BILLIONS and increase their quality of life. The appropriate response from liberals right now should be: Thank you President Trump.

"Trump will finally start to care for these people ... "

Oh, that is just adorable. Trump caring for people? Never has and never will.

He must be thinking of a scheme to make money for himself or his family or some grifter accomplices. Or a way he can gain leverage for some sort of retribution against one of his many enemies.

I will grant you, the homeless problem is a difficult one, and simply letting mentally ill people out on the streets is not the solution.

But I have no faith whatsoever in Trump. He is a con man, a mobster and a creep who cares only about himself.

Out of all of the things he's done, forced institutionalization has to be my favorite. It's time the streets get cleaned up from this bs. And before anyone complains, Democrats didn't do ---- to fix this situation and this is actually how you fix it.

#26 | Posted by Bluewaffles at 2025-07-27 04:56 AM | Reply

This will be the task assigned to the expanded ranks of ICE thugs. You think their treatment of immigrants has been cruel get ready to see the homeless treated far worse!

This should scare the hell out of anyone who is not cis/het, has mental illness or is close to such a person. History shows us that these types of facilities are used to imprison people who committed no wrong other than being different.
My grandma died in an asylum after Grandpa had her institutionalized. She left him to room with a woman, non-romantic. He claimed she was having an affair and that she was incapable of caring for herself because she had stopped cleaning the house when she was with him. She had sunk into a deep depression due to the physical and sexual abuse he subjected her to but the court wasn't interested in hearing about that.

Uh huh.
Because sending people to prison is how we get rid of problems in this country.
For example, thanks to decades of work by law enforcement, 1 in 3 black men has a felony conviction.
As a result, Blacks commit far less crime than Whites nowadays.

Another example: We sent millions of people to prison for the War on Drugs and now nobody uses drugs any more. Not even Fentanyl.

Because people shitting in the streets and leaving their dirty needles and trash everywhere is a better option than an institution with resources to help then.

bUh bLaCk pEoPlE!!!! You've made some of the most racist remarks right here on this site.

When California's population increased... they didn't build the infrastructure to host it.

Typical capitalists are trying to get things on the cheap. You gotta spend money to make money... just not their money. We spend the money they get rich.

They want you to buy their cars but they don't want to provide the roads to make that possible. They want you to pay for the car and the road.

Really... in the end... all they contribute is the idea... yawn.
