CA Brings back ineffective face mask mandate

Mask mandates are returning to health care settings in several Bay Area counties as an increase in COVID-19 cases overlaps with the cold and flu season. The local health orders require masks to be worn in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and other healthcare facilities. The story was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Napa counties have reinstated the mask requirements. The mandates become effective Nov. 1 and will continue through the end of March or April 2025.

I oft wonder if those who think masks are so "ineffective" would they, should they need an operation, want the doctors, nurses and all others in the operating room to not wear masks.

I have raised that question many, many times since late 2020, but not one of the anti-mask folk ever seems to answer it.

The NYC hospital where my SO had his kidney transplant has had and continues to have a mask mandate for the hospital, doctors' offices, treatment rooms, testing areas, etc. Mask mandates are helpful if people follow them by wearing decent quality masks.

Umm...Unirot, the reason a patient is not wearing a mask during surgery is because they have the anesthesia mask on.

My wife had shoulder surgery last year.

Neither the techs who put her on the operating table nor the nurses in the recovery area (8 patients fresh out of surgery) were wearing masks. Despite our being uber careful since COVID hit, and being the only ones in the waiting area at the surgical site, she got COVID and I caught it from her. Thank God for antiviral drugs. She was starting to have respiratory problems until it kicked in.

The hospital is part of the HCA/TriStar chain (Frist family). The surgical unit administrator told me they had a panel of doctors somewhere out of state who decided whether or not to require masks.

Masks should be MANDATORY in all surgical units. Especially during a surge in COVID cases. Geebus H!
