The FBI has released images of a person of interest sought in connection with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, the founder of the conservative youth activist organization Turning Point USA, during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

A quick Google says planes at 300 ft or lower altitude can be hard to track by radar. That would certainly get people's attention on the ground.

It doesn't disappear from radar, just from the public tracking sites like Flightaware and Flightradar24. Those use data from a transponder mounted in the aircraft that broadcasts plane information by radio. It's possible to turn those off, then the flight track will not show on public tracking sites.

Its not radar, ADSB is a transmitter on the plane. Receivers on the ground and satellites pick it up, and distribute it. On planes they have ADSB in and so you can observe traffic in your vicinity.

Those use data from a transponder mounted in the aircraft that broadcasts plane information by radio.

Typically the ADSBfor the flightaware and flightradar is crowdsourced. Many airports also have it and just record tracking info without distributing it, and bill planes for landing fees etc..

It's possible to turn those off, then the flight track will not show on public tracking sites.

I haven't seen this except for military. But within 30miles of Class Bravo, or Class A (ifr) > 17,999ft, you must have it turned on, unless Military.

Not all planes need ADSB though (electricity/power), you just need to notify ATC your intentions before the flight.

Its possible to have your ADSB data not transmitted through the federal networks. But in the air it is still broadcasted, for collision avoidance. Any local receiver could pick it up.

The plane in Lee's link, is low for the type and terrain; and thus loses ADSB signal, not many people out in that neck of the woods I expect.

There are areas near me that aren't covered either, its not uncommon.

When you watch the video of the assassin's escape, he's nimble and takes a chance by jumping off the short roof onto the lawn. Some people might have been concerned about twisting their ankle during the landing. The assassin either had practiced his "jump" from a similar height on to grass (unlikely), he knew what he is capable of (likely), or this was not his first choice to exit the roof (possibly).

Hey Cori ... He is young and spry. I think even I could make that jump. Tho my bones are obviously a bit more brittle. But it would be easy for him to hang down and drop. I am surprised that he just went home. You would think he would have had a better escape plan. John Wilkes Booth did.

You may also recall that Booth got one of his legs caught in the flag bunting that drapes over the balcony. And it slowed down his escape dramatically.. otherwise he may have actually gotten away and would have disappeared into the Deep South. Apple TV had a great short dramatic series about the whole assassination plot and the failed escape attempt. I thought it was pretty well done.
