The dailymail article shows why you cant just put most homeless people right next to actual working families. They just arent the same. Most homeless havent conformed.

Why do you think housing is so expensive? It's because people just want to live next to people who think like them. Neighborhoods are quiet because everyone in the neighborhood wants quiet. No one wants to live next to the ------- who is blasting music out of his garage in the middle of the night. You move around people who think like you because you want peace. That's why it's so expensive to live in nice neighborhoods.

No one wants to live around drug addicts or the mentally ill, because we arent drug addicts or mentally ill.

People who are sympathetic to folks facing homelessness challenges are sympathetic from a distance.

If you take that challenge and place it next door to them, the sympathy erodes and can be replaced with "get these ----------- out of my neighborhood."

So, if you want support for the necessary resources to combat homelessness....don't place the homeless next door to those folks.

Homelessness is not a technical problem. It's not a leaky pipe you call a plumber and it's fixed.

It's a constant adaptive challenge.

I've served on a couple boards of non-profits who provided housing to folks who are homeless. You're dealing with abusive relationships, drug/alcohol abuse, mental health issues, etc.

Those all complicate the solutions to the overall problem of homelessness.

Combating homelessness isn't simply about housing people.

It's about raising the minimum wage to a living wage.

It's about providing people with therapy, rehab, an education.

Helping homeless people will benefit society.

But it also requires Americans to care about each other more than our current, selfish society is willing to. (This doesn't apply to everyone, but it definitely applies to republicans who were shocked Trump's hateful policies were effecting them and not just brown and black people.)

Once Americans start caring for each other, this nation will be a better place for everyone.

show me where raising the minimum wage has taken a bite out of homelessness. Many cities have increased their minimum wage. Any data from that to validate your point?

Without looking I'll bet the cities with the highest minimum wage also have the largest amounts of homeless folks.

Without knowing anything whatsoever about your income or your living arrangements, other than that you live in Utah, I can assume that you live in a neighborhood that is commensurate with your income.

And I am willing to assume that the home values in the neighborhood/area in which you live are, for Utah standards, at least upper-middle-class, or higher.

Where I live, that's generally homes in the $400,000 to $800,000 range (MOL). That describes my neighborhood.

I am not aware of any government agencies buying homes in those price ranges for temporarily housing the chronically homeless.

I can show you how a single man working a minimum wage job in the 1950s and 60s could afford to support his family.

I can show you how a stagnant minimum wage has destroyed local economies and led to cities falling apart, increasing unemployment.

I can show you how wealth decreases criminal behavior.

I can show you how increasing the availability of well paying jobs decreases crime in the community.

This information is easy to find for someone actually interested.

And that will never be solved by buying/renting roofs over heads and warehousing such people there.

Nope.

Clown, Corky and others are on-point when they say that the solution isn't just warehousing people.

The solution involves a holistic approach, covering everything from housing to hygiene to mental health to employability (and a wage that will blossom into self-sufficiency).

Government largess (thanks, Danforth) is NOT the answer... by itself.

It takes commitment on a national level all the way down to one-on-one interactions. IOW, a priority.

I don't see that commitment outside of a few people/organizations/politicians.

Otherwise, NIMBY (thanks, Effeteposer) rules the day.

Nope.

Very nice neighborhoods across the country have local police forces keeping the riffraff outta town.

What did happen is some neighborhoods that use to be low income got gentrified and property values went up, but no additional police departments were built, so as Trump's depression increases homelessness, homeless people have been setting up tents in these areas.

So, the idea that homeless people are a thing to be put somewhere, by a government or a church, is not a healthy look.

It denies homeless people any sense of agency.

I'm surprised Republicans haven't been successfully lobbied by CoreCivic and GEO Group to simply criminalize being homeless.

We've got the camps already built.

I imagine it's probably the opposite.
Raising the minimum wage was predicted to lead to some minimum wage job losses.
It would follow that people losing their minimum wage are more likely to become homeless than people losing six figures.

To the larger point: show me where anything has taken a bite out of homelessness.
Significantly reducing homelessness simply costs more money than people are willing to spend.
This is without even considering the fact that there's a lot invested in making money off the poor. Payday loans. The ambulance that bring junkies to the hospital on the taxpayer dime. Medicaid providers whose business depends on people staying poor. Lottery tickets.

Once there's a financial incentive for things to push a certain way, that's the way they tend to go. If you're poor in this country, you are pushed towards being homeless.

You make rich people more money when you're on welfare and Section 8, than if you're just getting by on your own.

What is the reality that causes homelessness?

Income insecurity that leads to not having sufficient income to cover rent.

Income insecurity is caused by a number of factors, job market, education, substance abuse, domestic abuse, illness, mental health problems, familial responsibilities.

The underlying cause for those factors ranges from somewhat in the person's control-substance abuse, education to completely out of the individual's control-job market, mental health struggles

It is cruel to start from a position that an unhoused person is worth less or not worthy of assistance.

A just society would pour resources to assist unhoused people and not treat them like an eyesore that needs to be moved out of sight.

Solutions need to be comprehensive: Job training, rental assistance, mental health services, numerous affordable housing units, reliable child and senior care to name a few

America doesn't do that

Because America is broken

Because America is full of the morally bankrupt

The solutions are relatively straightforward and simple, like gun control or Medicare for all

But America is broken and it's populace morally bankrupt.

Homelessness has been an issue for centuries and is a by-product of capitalism and land ownership.

Displaced or impoverished people in England became the wards of the parish as there was no central social security system in the Elizabethan Era. A poor person from Gloucester was the responsibility of Gloucester parish.

In France, homeless people lived as "anchorites" in the bowels and basements of cathedrals and churches.

Indigenous peoples did not suffer this economic humiliation because there was no land ownership or property.

Coxey's Army marched on Washington in 1894 because of economic hardships caused by a depression.

John Steinbeck wrote about the great displacements caused by the Great Depression in the US.

The mortgage crisis from 20 or so years ago caused another flood of people who lost their homes. Downtown LA was flooded with these victims.

Medical bankruptcies in the US lead to 20% of those sufferers to lose their homes.

Veterans returning home with PTSD and/or drug issues find themselves unemployable and eventually homeless.

Convicts released after 25 years of prison come home to no one and little money saved, so they end up either homeless or back in prison.

ONLY THE LANDED ARISTOCRACY, LANDLORDS, OLIGARCHS, PROPERTY OWNERS, AND BILLIONAIRES ARE IMMUNE TO HOMELESSNESS.

    The advantage of the extended nuclear family is that they can pool their resources.

    If you don't have that option, I agree with others here. I just don't know how people survive.

    I was lucky that the GI Bill got me through college, but it was my perseverance that turned it into a career.

    I did a lot of job interviews and talked my way into positions.

    Now I am retired and not living rich, but so far I'm not worrying.

    I am so happy my son was smart and got on a track to success, and my grandchild just got accepted into an excellent university.

    They say success breeds success. Maybe that's the difference. Without role models, a lot of people just flounder.

    Yep. This is also why representation is so important, especially for children.

    Think about it, a century ago, your child's representation of who they saw as heroes and such was almost entirely controlled, gate-kept even, by the parents and perhaps whatever church they attended. So the problem of being a black child and seeing black people mostly indicated as criminals on TV wasn't even a concern, before TV was being broadcast into our homes.

    It's a completely different world now. Parents didn't grow up in a world with infinity TV channels and the Internet.

    They are homeless because of traumas they have sustained on the job, which includes things like seeing friends burned alive.

    It also includes physical injuries and chronic pain, caused by things as simple as lifting heavy weights day after day for years.

    It comes from excessive drinking, which the military actually encourages among the NCOs, to self-medicate the physical pain and emotional traumas.

    The military encourages drinking until the veteran gets in trouble with it, and then they usually just kick them out.

    My grandparents definitely did but they lived through the Great Depression. My parents were raised in the prosperity following WWII.
