Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

In a classified addendum to Russia's official - and public - "Foreign Policy Concept of the Russian Federation," the ministry calls for an "offensive information campaign" and other measures spanning "the military-political, economic and trade and informational psychological spheres" against a "coalition of unfriendly countries" led by the United States.

"We need to continue adjusting our approach to relations with unfriendly states," states the 2023 document, which was provided to The Washington Post by a European intelligence service. "It's important to create a mechanism for finding the vulnerable points of their external and internal policies with the aim of developing practical steps to weaken Russia's opponents."

The document for the first time provides official confirmation and codification of what many in the Moscow elite say has become a hybrid war against the West. Russia is seeking to subvert Western support for Ukraine and disrupt the domestic politics of the United States and European countries, through propaganda campaigns supporting isolationist and extremist policies, according to Kremlin documents previously reported on by The Post.

Using much tougher and blunter language than the public foreign policy document, the secret addendum, dated April 11, 2023, claims that the United States is leading a coalition of "unfriendly countries" aimed at weakening Russia because Moscow is "a threat to Western global hegemony." The document says the outcome of Russia's war in Ukraine will "to a great degree determine the outlines of the future world order," a clear indication that Moscow sees the result of its invasion as inextricably bound with its ability - and that of other authoritarian nations - to impose its will globally.

We see Russia's foreign policy goals being articulated every single day here on The Retort - and from the public utterances and statements from myriad elected Republicans. Let there be no doubt where the impetus is coming from and our continuing responsibility to not only highlight it, but oppose it as best we can.

You didn't need a secret document to figure this out.

Conversely, if you are a Republican, even the existence of a secret document won't get you to believe it.

One proposal submitted in February 2023 to the Foreign Ministry by the deputy head of Moscow's Institute for the Commonwealth of Independent States, which maintains close ties to Russia's security apparatus, laid out Russia's options more bluntly still.

The academic, Vladimir Zharikhin, called for Russia to "continue to facilitate the coming to power of isolationist right-wing forces in America," "enable the destabilization of Latin American countries and the rise to power of extremist forces on the far left and far right there," as well as facilitate "the restoration of European countries' sovereignty by supporting parties dissatisfied with economic pressure from the U.S."

Other points in the policy proposal, which was also provided to The Post, suggested that Moscow stoke conflict between the United States and China over Taiwan to bring Russia and China closer together, as well as "to escalate the situation in the Middle East around Israel, Iran and Syria to distract the U.S. with the problems of this region."

I sincerely hope that pro-Ukraine House members from both sides of the aisle bring this information to the floor during the debate over the vital aid Ukraine needs simply to survive.

And for those asking why our support of Ukraine is so important when our countries are geographically so far apart, isn't the answer now rather obvious?

Welcome to America

Bellringer won't believe it even if Putin said it himself.

For Mikhail Khodorkovsky - the longtime Putin critic who was once Russia's richest man until a clash with the Kremlin landed him 10 years in prison - it is not surprising that Russia is seeking to do everything it can to undermine the United States. "For Putin, it is absolutely natural that he should try to create the maximum number of problems for the U.S.," he said. "The task is to take the U.S. out of the game, and then destroy NATO. This doesn't mean dissolving it, but to create the feeling among people that NATO isn't defending them."

"The Americans consider that insofar as they are not directly participating in the war [in Ukraine], then any loss is not their loss," Khodorkovsky said. "This is an absolute misunderstanding."

A defeat for Ukraine, he said, "means that many will stop fearing challenging the U.S." and the costs for the United States will only increase.

Putin is playing global chess, Republicans are playing tiddlywinks.

It just shows how much more interested they are in their Party than their Country, despite all their pretense of "nationalism".

Microsoft Sees Slowdown in Russia, China Efforts to Sway US Vote
finance.yahoo.com

... Russia is working to undermine US support for Ukraine ahead of the 2024 election, while Chinese influence campaigns aim to divide Americans and undercut their faith in democracy, according to new research from Microsoft Corp.

But both countries' persistent efforts to shape American politics through propaganda and cyberattacks have been less pronounced during this year's election cycle than they were in 2016 and 2020, the company said in a report published Wednesday. It also found that widespread fears of voters being influenced by deepfake videos made with artificial intelligence haven't yet happened, while simpler efforts have been more persuasive.

Representatives for the Chinese and Russian embassies in Washington didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Microsoft researchers found several "Russia-affiliated" efforts to push disinformation to hurt Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy or cause Americans to question their government's support for Ukraine as it continues to battle Russia's 2022 invasion. These campaigns have been conducted in English and Spanish, and they often take the form of purported whistleblowers or amateur journalists posting disinformation that is then covered by seemingly unaffiliated websites, the report states.

Microsoft found that the most prolific pushers of these narratives "are backed by or affiliated with" the administration of Russian President Vladimir Putin and that the disinformation gets taken up by Americans who are likely unaware of its source. The company also said it's observed an uptick in recent months of a hacking group affiliated with the Russian military targeting Western policy think tanks. ...

"Less pronounced" could mean less overt, more subtle, and not having less of an effect.

the Don't Doctrine just isn't working.

Did you bother to actually READ the statements you're commenting on? They're not about Biden whatsoever. They're about the fact that if Putin isn't deterred in Ukraine, then he'll launch attacks on other countries - likely NATO members too - and/or other anti-America countries won't fear US reprisals should they attack other nations in their spheres of influence such as China trying to retake Taiwan.

This is more about what happens AFTER a nation ignores any admonition by the US to NOT act. It's showing them why they shouldn't have acted in the first place by making the cost of their hubris unsustainable.

The problem today in the US is Putin Republicans stopping Congress from following up on the very means to defeat such threats once they manifest themselves.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) said on C-SPAN that some of his Republican colleagues want Russia to "win" in their war with Ukraine.

Said Bacon: "If we don't do this, the Russians will be in Kiev. Unfortunately, a few of my colleagues would like to see the Russians win. I don't know why that is the case. I think it's a terrible thing."

Another repug admits the obvious.

Somebody really needs to look into who is behind MTG's recent amendments to the Ukraine aid bill because she isn't knowledgeable enough to have come up with some of them on her own:

Jay in Kyiv
@JayinKyiv

The amendment that Marjorie Taylor Greene just proposed to sabotage the Ukraine bill is something that is such a nuanced Russian disinfo narrative that it could have only come directly from her Russian handlers.

The notion that Hungarians are being persecuted in Ukraine is insane BUT it's being pushed by both Orban (who was promised a piece of Ukraine by Putin) and Russian disinfo machine. For an American to suggest this really confirms she is being handled.

@fbi
@RepMTG

Amendment to H.R. 8035 " Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2024

No funding shall be made available to Ukraine unless restrictions on ethnic minorities',
including Hungarians in Transcarpathia, right to use their native languages in schools are
lifted.

Background to MTG's amendment:

Hungary far-right would lay claim to neighbouring region if Ukraine loses war

BUDAPEST, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Hungary's far-right Our Homeland party would lay claim to a western region of Ukraine that is home to about 150,000 ethnic Hungarians if Ukraine loses its statehood due to Russia's invasion, the party's leader said late on Saturday.

Our Homeland leader Laszlo Toroczkai made the remarks at a conference where the party, which has six lawmakers in the 199-strong Hungarian parliament, hosted far-right leaders from Germany's AfD and the Dutch Forum for Democracy, among others.

"Regarding the war in Ukraine, our message is very simple: immediate ceasefire, peace and a resolution through talks," Toroczkai said in a video posted on his party's website, calling for autonomy for ethnic Hungarians in western Ukraine.

"If this war ends up with Ukraine losing its statehood, because this is also on the cards, then as the only Hungarian party taking this position, let me signal that we lay claim to Transcarpathia," he said, drawing applause from the crowd.
