thinking a lot lately about our surprise when the victim of state violence is white, a citizen, a priest, a veteran, some category viewed as exempt from that violence. it's time to understand you aren't. no one is. whiteness isn't the color of your skin it is a conditional privilege you can lose.
in the 60s, the klan killed white civil rights workers alongside their black comrades. when you join the struggle you lose your status in the system you're fighting.
in the streets, on a riot line, at a demo, wherever. we're all the same to them. they're blue & you're the enemy. i'm not too proud to admit that i didn't really understand that until the first time a cop hit me, a little blonde white woman. i watched a lot of other white women learn that in 2020.
there is still a lot of power & privilege in being white, being a citizen, knowing you have the resources to get bailed out or hire a lawyer, knowing you won't get deported ... use it wisely. but don't think it will stop a baton or a bullet. please don't think it will save your life.
