... The statistics, published in the FBI's Summary of Crime in the Nation 2023 report, show a continued downward trend in crime across the country after it surged during the coronavirus pandemic.

Overall violent crime dropped by an estimated 3% in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to the FBI report. The largest decreases were seen in murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, which fell an estimated 11.6%. Rape also saw a sharp decrease, falling by an estimated 9.4%.

Property crime also was down nationwide, dropping 2.4% in 2023 compared to the previous year. Burglary and larceny-theft saw decreases of 7.6% and 4.4% respectively. Motor vehicle theft, however, saw a significant jump. It was up 12.6% in 2023 compared to 2022.

In a statement, President Biden claimed credit for the decline, noting that when he took office "our nation had just seen the highest increase in murders ever recorded under the previous Administration."

Biden cited his administration's action is stopping the illegal flow of guns, increased public safety funding, his executive action on guns and the gun violence legislation he signed.

"The only way to continue this progress is by investing in what works," he said. ...

It's not fake news, they're reporting the numbers they've been given. The problem is capturing the data - it aint happening.

What?! Crime and violent crime have been falling during Biden's presidency? And down again last year?

I just saw Trump claim crime is up 43%, and we're headed for an apocalypse, disaster like no one's ever seen in our country, zombie immigrants eating family pets, the world coming to an end if VP Harris is elected!!!!... OMG!

It's funny watching a tubby, overweight out of thinking shape LFT trying to spin this data to support his criminal traitor Cult Leader.

It's kinda like watching Trump trying to climb onto a bicycle... prolly. Not that that has ever happened!

So you're suggesting democrats are copying what republicans did during covid, and trying to make a problem vanish by not reporting it?

Why would police in red states want to help dems in that way?

#10 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2024-09-23 04:51 PM

But but but the people with the data are all criminals. Why aren't we looking at THEM???

In a statement, President Biden claimed credit for the decline, noting that when he took office "our nation had just seen the highest increase in murders ever recorded under the previous Administration." (Trump)

Trump would love for America to forget how f'd up our country was when he left office. Record deficits (despite "a roaring economy), rising political violence because of his rhetoric, a pandemic he egregiously mishandled, January 6th, etc etc

Fantastic!

Crime rates always fall when people are working and jobs are plentiful, because people are under less stress and feel better about and themselves and their lives. Murder rates went up under Dotard because the economy collapsed under his watch, people lost their jobs, kids were home from school, and there was great uncertainty about whether or not people would live, work, lose their place to live, etc. President Biden, under his calm leadership pushed out truth about COVID, got shots in arms, got people back to work and school, and revitalized the economy, thats why crime rates went down, and continue to fall.

The short answer is blue city bosses that contain the districts with peak crime.

but over here in reality, people went on a defund the police kick, but even more people said to hell with that, ramp up police funding, and subsequently crime decreases as the force concentration in key areas increases.

#15 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2024-09-23 07:31 PM

Also according to the FBI website, the data shows there was not a single reported homicide in Los Angeles or New Orleans last year.

There could be more cities that reported none as well, but that's all I found.

@#15 ... but even more people said to hell with that ...

Yup.

The whole defund the police kick was rejected by both Republicans and Democrats.

It was something proposed by the more radical part of the Democratic Party, and the party rejected it.

In an (I'll be kind) ironic move...

OpEd: No Country for Law Men: The GOP Votes to Defund the FBI (March 2024)
www.newsweek.com

... It is a supreme irony that with urban Democratic leaders easing ill-advised restrictions on police, Republicans in Congress have managed the only successful federal attempt to defund the police. And not just any police. The GOP has bitten a sizable chunk out of the FBI's budget. ...

This is false.

All around the BayArea SFPD, and Oakland PD was defunded under this idea.

This happened to 20 major cities in 2021.

Crime was way up under Trump, understandably so, because of COVID.
Trump's statement recently are complete fabrications. There is absolutely no data supporting his lies. He's a deranged and deluded narcissist that's projecting his high crime numbers on to the current administration - years later.

And this insanity about "defunding"?
Oh - just another deflection ignoring the reality of what actually happened.

#24 | Posted by YAV at 2024-09-23 08:06 PM

I'll just pass something on I have been told by a local policeman - not that I am a subscriber of it.

Camden, NJ has had a huge decrease in reported crime - after being one of the worst if not the worst city in the country. CNN even did a segment on it.

A local policeman - not from Camden - told me they are manipulating the numbers (and basically not reporting crime).

Also noting this officer is a Trump supporter.

Here's a supporting article:

Entirely different time period, not even related to Floyd.

Still, very interesting, even if it has nothing to do with "defund the police" nonsense. It is a potential model for change. Thanks for linking that.

Based on what that local policeman said I'd bet he wasn't a Camden officer but perhaps one that's a Union member in a different precinct? The police union had to be done away with in Camden to finally break the horrible police "blue line" that had pitted horrific police against the populace. That would definitely make some union officers pretty pissed off and worried about their own jobs.

The idea of manipulating the numbers is fairly ridiculous in the context of Camden.

In terms of the context of this thread, it's utter bullshht. It is insane to think the crime numbers are being manipulated across all municipalities of any significance across all fifty states.

This is just straight up untrue. Per your link, LAPD and NOPD reported 325 and 198 homicides in 2023 respectively. Simply sort by State and Agency (LAPD and NOPD) and you can easily find these numbers. Easily. Did you actually think some people would believe your lie that major cities weren't reporting to the FBI?
