Bob Newhart, the deadpan accountant-turned-comedian who became one of the most popular TV stars of his time after striking gold with a classic comedy album, has died at 94. Jerry Digney, Newhart's publicist, says the actor died Thursday in Los Angeles after a series of short illnesses.

... Newhart, best remembered now as the star of two hit television shows of the 1970s and 1980s that bore his name, launched his career as a standup comic in the late 1950s. He gained nationwide fame when his routine was captured on vinyl in 1960 as "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart," which went on to win a Grammy Award as album of the year.

While other comedians of the time, including Lenny Bruce, Mort Sahl, Alan King, and Mike Nichols and Elaine May, frequently got laughs with their aggressive attacks on modern mores, Newhart was an anomaly. His outlook was modern, but he rarely raised his voice above a hesitant, almost stammering delivery. His only prop was a telephone, used to pretend to hold a conversation with someone on the other end of the line. ...

I loved his 1970s and 1980s sitcoms and his appearances on Big Bang Show and Young Sheldon as Professor Proton, along with all the other places he popped up.

Newhart was a comedy constant. I'm trying to think of any project he did in which he wasn't exactly what you'd expect him to be. Can't think of one!

Funny funny man.

He was a great comedian first; his albums were popular. But his TV show was something different than we had previously seen... understated, intelligent comedy.

Strange but true: He and Don Rickles (and wives) were very close friends.

Man was a comedic genius, and it all started with his shtick of one side of a phone conversation -- which was well used on the first Newhart show.

"I regret that I thought he died years ago."

Same here.

I was also surprised when I found out Anthony Hopkins is still with us.

I guess we're taking it for granted now that many people we knew many years ago are passing on.

I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'.

The final episode of the Newhart series s one of my all-time favorite series finales.

[spoiler alert]

Basically, Mr Newhart wakes up on bed with his wife from the Bob Newhart Show (Suzanne Pleshette), and discovers the whole Newhart show was a dream.

Why the Newhart' Finale is the Perfect Example of Bob Newhart's Comic Genius
www.rollingstone.com

... The comedian and TV star -- who died today at age 94 -- knew that his second series would always be compared to his first. So he crafted the greatest sitcom farewell ever

Newhart, Bob Newharts second CBS sitcom, ran for eight seasons and 184 episodes from 1982-1990, neatly surpassing the run of his first CBS sitcom, The Bob Newhart Show, which ran from six seasons and 142 episodes from 1972-1978. But the second show always lived in the shadow of the first. The Bob Newhart Show was viewed as a key piece of a new Golden Age of TV comedy in the Seventies " a whipsmart ensemble sitcom perfectly tailored to the sane man in an insane world sensibility of its eponymous star, who died today at age 94. Newhart eventually won its own fans, but only after several years of extensive creative tinkering and cast changes. And even at its peak, it was considered a very good followup to a masterpiece.

Eventually, Newhart -" with a massive assist from his wife Ginnie -- figured out how to turn this situation to the newer show's advantage, and in the process created the single best joke any sitcom has ever used to say goodbye. ...

Amongst the 'Old School' American comics, he was one of the very best. And one of the greatest, most human of deliveries. A master of hesitence, and banter.

RIP Mr. Newhart,
thanks for making millions of us laugh.

Bob Newhart, Comedy Icon, Dies at 94
variety.com

... Bob Newhart, the genteel but sharply satirical comic whose TV series "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Newhart" were huge hits throughout the 1970s and '80s, died Thursday in Los Angeles. He was 94.

Newhart's publicist Jerry Digney said he died after a series of short illnesses.

Newhart was also known to younger audiences as Papa Elf in the 2003 Christmas classic "Elf," his guest spots on "The Big Bang Theory" (for which he won his only Emmy, as a guest star in 2013) and most recently appeared in three episodes of "Young Sheldon."

"The Big Bang Theory" creator Chuck Lorre remembered Newhart, saying in a statement, "For years I begged Bob to appear on one of my shows. He always said no.

But then he fell in love with 'The Big Bang Theory' and said yes -- with two provisions. One: his character had to have an arc that spanned several episodes. And two: he wanted to win an Emmy. We delivered on both. I got to work with a comedy legend. A master of the craft, and a kind and gentle man.

I even got to call him a friend. How lucky am I?" ...

If you read about his life he had the most unusual and organic entry to showbiz I've ever heard of. His co-workers thought he was funny he had a routine he had developed to amuse them they insisted he perform at a annual company-wide event the people who had never met him before thought he was hilarious one of them had a friend in Show Business who watched him perform and said they could make this into a comedy album he performed the routine for the first time in front of the general population while it was being recorded and it was a hit.

Rip professor proton.

Watched a celebrity comedy roast where Bob Newhart was roasting Don Rickles.

Bob was very funny.

But then Don gets up to do his rebuttal and floors the room with one line.

Man, talk about extremely funny people.
