Technically? I think so.

My overall point is that starting with the low hanging fruit is smart. Going after the nasties is a way to build political capital. And a two pronged approach of deportations and being hawkish at the border does the same as both are popular measures. Lefties crying that human traffickers are being removed makes the detractors look kind ridiculous. Now a point will eventually be reached where the low fruit is gone and will create a politically difficult form in the road. But we aren't even close to that yet.

No. I'm saying if a person wants to enter this country the said person needs to do so by legal channels. This is not a difficult concept, or it shouldn't be. We either have and enforce laws or we don't. I'm for having and enforcing laws. If laws need to be changed we have a process for doing so.

When people think of drug smugglers, they often imagine illegal immigrants sneaking into the United States across the southwest border. But the reality is that the vast majority of drug smuggling occurs at ports of entry (including airports), and the vast majority of traffickers are U.S. citizens. According to data from the U.S. Sentencing Commission, U.S. citizens had 77 percent of federal drug trafficking convictions in 2018. This percentage has grown from 69 percent in 2012. As Figure 1 shows, the share of drug traffickers who were illegal immigrants fell from 21 percent in 2012 to 16 percent in 2018.

This is going to piss a lot of people off but it needs to be said...

Executive actions and orders, in and of themselves, are not a bad thing.

As long as they fall within the purview of the Executive branch.

Trump issued an EO trying to end birthright citizenship. While I think anchor babies are an abuse of the system, the Constitution is very clear on this issue. It will rightly be laughed out of court.

It looks like the same thing is close to happening with DACA, which is also a blatant over-reach by the Executive.

Congress needs to pass targeted laws that don't have crap like, "Secretary shall..." and POTUS needs to enforce said laws.

This whipsaw executive authority needs to stop. People can't organize their lives around this level of chaos when it changes so rapidly.

Another example: Paris Climate. Put it before the Senate for a 2/3 vote and we are either bound by that or it's something we ignore. Neither party has done that.

That is very true, but it's not going to happen. There will no changes to the Constitution, so temporary EOs are all there is.

Laura Mohr,

I didn't vote for Trump. In the first primary (2016) I went for Cruz, not because I like him, I don't, but because he was the only candidate who had a shot at defeating Trump. In this last primary I supported DeSantis for the same reason. Unfortunately Trump won. I try really hard to deal n reality. Reality is he's the present dent for the next 4 years. So, my hope is it's a net positive.

I make a concerted effort to be objective. I do have biases, we all do. I work at making sure I diversify my sources of news and information to avoid living in an echo chamber.

Trump's EO to end birthright citizenship? Ridiculously stupid and I've been vocal about that. His deportations and tightening the border. 100% necessary especially given the massive influx over the past 4 years.

JPW articulated some legitimate concerns and I agree it's something we need to carefully monitor.

Having said that I fully support the new measure being taken, at least so far. But we need to keep a tight eye on it. It's something that can be easily abused and if that happens we need to take measures to stop it. Impeachment if necessary.

How about some basic context. Terrorists were held at Guantanamo, they were tortured there (thanks for nothing DeSantis), and incarcerated without any constitutional protections of due process.

Why did the American public back this? Because they were fnkcin' terrorists; directly or indirectly murderers. Now JEFFJ is perfectly fine with undocumented immigrants (which is mostly a civil violation, at worst a misdemeanor unless already previously deported) being sent to the exact same place we sent terrorists to be tortured.

30,000 people in a space with a capacity of 800 sounds awfully "concentrated" to me. They'll have to expand by 3,650%, which will cost how many billions of dollars under the MIC?

Some random thoughts:

1. Gitmo has an absolute maximum design capacity for detainees of 1,500.

2. ------- has speculated about sending US citizens convicted of crimes to other countries.

3. The concept that drug smuggling and human trafficking has anything to do with undocumented immigration is laughable. If you think cartels are putting their product in the hands of random people sneaking into the country who are usually caught, you are delusional and stupid-looking at you jeff.

4. Morons (like jeff) who advocate for people going through the right way to enter the country are ignorant of the fact that ------- has and will cut off those avenues. He took immediate steps to do just that. People who have done the right thing are now denied access.

5. Idiots (like jeff) refuse to acknowledge that the vast majority of undocumented immigrants come for work that is promoted by American industry. The other large groups of immigrants are a. asylum seekers-legal and b. refugees-legal. and c. those with temporary protected status i.e. Haitians, or Cubans-legal. ------- has purposely obfuscated this and blurs the lines so every immigrant is considered a criminal (like jeff's post reek of)

6. The ------- administration is flouting the Constitution. Like it or not the Constitution GUARANTEES every single human being due process. Many of the people being deported are receiving zero due process.

7. The reason why there are so many EOs is that Congress has forsaken it's primary functions and that is MOSTLY republican's fault who refuse to govern. Who refuse to pass laws. Presidents needfully take action that is required.

8. ------- is intentionally flooding the zone with -------- on immigration in a blatant power grab-see item 7.

9. Jeff (who is a moron) posted the following: "We have a process. That process doesn't involve sneaking across the southern border without any kind of paperwork." This is factually incorrect. A person seeking asylum CAN "sneak in without passport" and request asylum-that is American law. The American system then processes that request to determine whether the person is deserving of asylum. Biden established a policy (and an APP) that allowed people to apply for asylum in their home country and come to the country at a specified time for an interview/hearing. Again, this is HOW it is supposed to work. ------- shut that down immediately.

10. No one, absolutely NO ONE believes what jeff says on who he voted for. Just sayin'

11. Jeff really is a reprehensible human being. The worst of the worst.

Trump and his cultists hate due process, even though they all were afforded that exact due process for all of their crimes.

Cheaper for the taxpayers as Guantanamo already has the staffing and facilities in place.

Hey stupid magat scum

1. Gitma has a design absolute maximum capacity of 1,500

2. 30,000 is approximately 28,500 more than 1,500

3. Chicago has the largest jail in the US with a capacity of 9,000

4. The level of effort it will take to construct a facility large enough to house 30,000 people is phenomenal

5. Detention and immigrant processing is not a military task, thus training will be required.

6. There will be an ongoing need to feed and provide care to these detainees.

So, umm, yeah, you are completely and utterly wrong.

Best that I could find is this:

Drive 10 minutes in another direction, past the base's scrubby nine-hole golf course, and you arrive at a gate to what is essentially a base within the base, the detention zone. It is under the command of an Army brigadier general who is responsible for the Pentagon's last 39 wartime prisoners and a staff of 1,500 people, mostly soldiers from the National Guard on nine-month tours of duty.
www.nytimes.com

So they have "beds" that can accommodate 1,500 people, but clearly not 1,500 people in confinement.

A lot of conflation taking place.

@#93 ... A lot of conflation taking place. ...

ya think. That is why I asked for a link, which you supplied. Thanks for that.

From that proffered link ...

Guantnamo Bay: Beyond the Prison (2021)
www.nytimes.com

... Mention this place, and people tend to think of caged men wearing orange uniforms and on their knees, the image of opening day at the wartime prison four months after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

But this military base is more than one big prison. About 6,000 people live at the U.S. Navy outpost, which has the trappings of small-town America and the amenities of a college campus, and functions like a cross between a gated community and a police state.

It has a Defense Department school system for the children of sailors and contractors, a seaport for Navy and Coast Guard supply missions, bars, ball fields, neighborhoods with swing sets, beaches with barbecue grills and pleasure boats to rent for excursions on the bay.

It also has a McDonald's with a drive-through wide enough for tactical vehicles, just below a hilltop church with a white steeple. A 10-minute drive in one direction takes you to Nob Hill, a neighborhood of three-bedroom homes for junior officers on the base of 700 families.

Drive 10 minutes in another direction, past the base's scrubby nine-hole golf course, and you arrive at a gate to what is essentially a base within the base, the detention zone. It is under the command of an Army brigadier general who is responsible for the Pentagon's last 39 wartime prisoners and a staff of 1,500 people, mostly soldiers from the National Guard on nine-month tours of duty. ...

So, 30,000 capacity?

I recall, one time Trump went outside holdinf a Bible upside down and that convinced Christians he shared their beliefs. when to when he wants their votes and nothing more than that. WWJD? Does anyone think He would be rounding up and incarcerating those undocumented people and shippong them to a concentration camp in Cuba? I would have to say this rivals the roundimg up and incarceration of Americans of Japanese ancestry during WWII; maybe it would have been more fair to have rounded up those of German descent too? One does have to wonder why the descendants of Germans weren't treated the same as those of Japanese descent? Just like Trump's plan for the illegal immigrants today? Think it has anything to do with the color of their skin? I just don't think I wiil be able to tolerate MAGA Christians without laughing in their faces from now on.
