Cattle farmers and agricultural groups are voicing opposition to President Donald Trump's plan to import Argentine beef in an effort to address record-high prices.

A White House lunch on Tuesday was supposed to celebrate GOP unity on the shutdown. But farm-state Republicans also let Trump know they are not happy about his idea to buy more beef from Argentina -- one of U.S. ranchers' biggest competitors -- in order to lower food prices.

"They're fighting for their life. You understand what that means? They have no money. They have no anything. They're fighting so hard to survive. Argentine peso weakens to fresh low despite US interventions

The Argentine peso has fallen below the level it reached before the US Treasury began purchases earlier this month, in a sign that the Trump administration's financial support is failing to halt the currency's slide ahead of a crucial election for libertarian president Javier Milei.

The peso dropped almost 1 per cent in early trading on Monday to 1,476 against the dollar, touching a fresh record intraday low, before paring its losses. The level is close to the bottom of an exchange rate band adopted in April.

The slide has resumed despite three purchases of pesos by the US Treasury since October 9 " which Argentine economists estimate total roughly $400mn, although neither government has confirmed the figure " as well as the announcement of a $20bn currency swap line between the two countries.

Trump has lost his mind and Republicans don't care.

Trump is Project 2025's Useful Idiot, and that's what Republicans voted for.

Lifelong Dummkopf Trumpf Modus Operandi: "Throwing away good money at bad money."

Worse:

Trumpf, in response to a female reporter asking how farmers will feel about his proposal, said: "Argentina is fighting for its life, young lady. You don't know anything about it. They're fighting for their life. Nothing is benefiting Argentina.

Hmph.

And Americans aren't dying from a lack of healthcare, malnutrition, or rampant gun violence?

Now insert Haitians, Ukrainians, or Palestinians as the subject of the above sentence.

If I was Trump, I would send loaded handguns to all the farmers, then just sit back and let nature run its course.

With a hand-written note by autopen that reads:

"Thank you in advance for doing what you know is right, brave Patriot. Your sacrifice is my gain."
Signed,

The US already imports Beef from Argentina. Argentine beef accounts for about 2% " that even doubling that to 4% wouldn't change prices much as its typically just for ground beef.
Besides, beef imports are down overall because of the 50% tariffs that Trump imposed on Brazil, and limits on Mexico, where the country is fighting the screwworm.

For some reason, the US has a shortage of USDA slaughterhouses/processing. There's plenty of backlog.

I am surprised none of these ranchers are complaining about that.

Luckily for me, I buy my chicken, beef, pork, and lamb locally. You can do that too, you know. It's a little pricey, but you can't beat organic meat.

No, this is the Bessent & Buddies Bailout.

It turns out Nazis never did turn away from Argentina, even after a lot of them got caught.

Because somebody, somewhere, might get an abortion.

In any case, you're probably right.

And if you aren't, Trump will steal.corrupt/suppress the mid-term elections anyway if they chose to punish him.

He did claim while on the campaign trail that he had a concept of a plan and that only he could fix everything.

Now that he is firmly ensconced in power and feeling his oats when asked how will he fix the country ... his answer?

Why the actual ---- would we buy Argentinian beef?

Our AMERICAN ranchers are getting crushed already by cheap ---- foreign beef imports. The meat packers are already under cutting our AMERICAN producers as it is.

This is an OUTRAGE.

What really surprised me about Trump's comments was how emotional he got talking about Argentines. He was asked about Americans and was clearly offended by it.

Trumpy is worried! He is worried about those starving Argentines! They are struggling to survive! Trumpy is not worried about struggling Americans. They got healthcare ... well some of them do ... ONLY THE WEAK WILL FAIL!

And they won't go hungry.

He knows Americans will not go hungry. Because he knows STUFF! (And you don't)

And he knows that they can always eat their pets.

You can bet Argentina will get paid for it anyway.

This has nothing to do with buying beef. It's just giving more money to Argentina.

Trump enjoyed immense popularity with farmers before his victory in the 2024 election, going on to win over three-quarters of farming-dependent counties according to Investigate Midwest.

And now all them farmers will get to enjoy the FAFO with the rest of us!

"Why the actual ---- would we buy Argentinian beef?"

We've been sourcing Argentinian beef for decades, and I believe it was Argentina and a few other countries that prevailed in a WTO case where now we have to de-specify Country Of Origin Labeling for beef and pork. (Edit. It was Canada and Mexico that sued and won.)

You can, though. Ask the butcher to take a piece of chuck and run it through the grinder.

The COOL exemption is only for grind. And if you buy that pre-ground stuff, you're already buying meat from up to three continents in one package.
