President Donald Trump on Friday demanded that the Federal Reserve slash interest rates or else he will cut off trade with countries with which the U.S. maintains trade deficits.

"Trump threatened on Friday to halt a broad swath of U.S. trade unless the Federal Reserve slashed interest rates, issuing a series of sweeping ultimatums that could prove costly to the economy." This is why the Fed needs independence, as do other agencies that the Supreme Court stripped it from.

LOL. The comedy show continues. Why doesn't he just rename the "Trump Reserve" and make himself chairman?

Clearly Trump is applying for the title of Worst President in the History of this Constitutional Republic and quite able and willing to bankrupt America to make a point. Some other nations have a deficit with us, and if the entire world does what he suggests...chaos.

The GOP will remain silent about this.

Holy Mike will utter his lame "I have not seen what you are talking about" excuse.

Just remember, Pedo Don ordered Holy Mike to shut down the House to keep Massie from reading the names of the child rapists.

Who does this? A------------ does it.

The bottom must be falling out of all Trump's grand schemes for winning the midterms.

I can't even imagine what he has planned for a "national emergency."

Kevin Warsh is screwed. Trump, who projects his sins and crimes onto others, is projecting the problems with the US economy onto the shoulders of the new Fed Chair. The result of the comments made should NOT be a test of policy on the part f the Federal Reserve, yet Warsh now faces that test. Were he to act on Trump's behalf his time at the Fed from here forward would be seen as that of a political toady, unreliable on the world stage. If Warsh ignores Trump (which he should) the calls for his head from 1600 Pennsylvania will commence shortly thereafter, with blame for the state of the economy coming daily.

Warch wanted this job, and he is about to start regretting that he got it...

On second thought, Yes I can. Remember the Reichtag?

With that Nazi Stephen Miller all up in Trump's ear, now I wonder if the Capital Building and the White House are covered by fire insurance.

>cut off trade with countries with which the U.S. maintains trade deficits.

Probably not a bad idea, absent a balancing negotiation

Please, explain away.

Halting trade with our allied nations will only hurt Americans.

Just ask our farmers.

Allies, friends, partners. Apparently, the US has no need for any of them.

You're just too simple minded to know why this is a bad idea.

Let me allow Gemini explain it to you like a moron:
Conversation with Gemini:

"what would really happen if trump really did cut off trade with countries with whom we have a trade deficit? explain it to me like i'm a moron"

"A trade deficit just means we buy more stuff from a country than they buy from us. If the U.S. completely cut off trade with every country where that happens, it would mean cutting off almost all our major trading partners"including Mexico, Canada, China, Japan, Germany, and South Korea.

If that happened, four major things would go down immediately:

1. Store shelves would go empty overnight
The U.S. doesn't make everything it uses. Cutting off trade means instant shortages of:

Tech: iPhones, tvs, computer chips, and parts needed to fix appliances.

Vehicles: New cars and auto parts (meaning fixing a broken car becomes nearly impossible).

Everyday items: Clothes, shoes, furniture, and toys.

Food & Medicine: Fresh fruit in the winter, avocados, coffee, tea, and critical generic drugs.

2. Extreme inflation (Prices would skyrocket)
When stuff gets rare, it gets expensive.

Even if U.S. factories tried to step in and make these things, American labor and production cost way more.

Local factories would also run out of raw materials or imported parts, forcing them to jack up prices on domestic products.

3. American workers would lose their jobs
Trade goes both ways. If we stop buying from them, two things happen to U.S. businesses:

No parts to build stuff: An American factory that builds airplanes or tractors needs foreign parts. Without them, the factory shuts down and lays off workers.

Retaliation: Other countries will instantly ban American goods in response. U.S. farmers couldn't sell soybeans or pork overseas, leading to massive bankruptcies across rural America.

4. A global economic crash
The U.S. is the biggest buyer in the world. Pulling out of global trade would plunge the U.S."and most of the world"into an immediate, severe economic depression.

A trade deficit isn't inherently a "loss." It's like your relationship with your local grocery store: you have a massive trade deficit with them because you buy their food and they buy nothing from you. Cutting off that "deficit" means you stop getting food."

Does that make sense to you dumbass or is it too long for you to read?

I guarantee he did not read or absorb that.

Short version, @john_savage2, why do we use trade embargoes or the threat thereof to punish other nations? Because restricting trade strangles a country economically. Trump's threat to stop trading with other countries is the economic equivalent of scoring an own goal.
