More from the article ...

... At Thanksgiving last year, a great-aunt tried to offer Kayla Cornett a reassuring example: Her older cousin had worked hard, saved and bought a house. Cornett, 24, could do the same, she said -- if she tried just a little bit harder.

What stayed with her long after the turkey was cleared was the implication that her current efforts just weren't enough. She was trying to keep up with rent and the ordinary expenses of adulthood, and it was a struggle. She recently started carrying a credit-card balance for the first time, she says, after even modest costs began piling up. Filling her gas tank was $40. "I can not eat, or I can have credit card debt," she remembers thinking when older relatives questioned her balance.

Cornett and her partner have stayed in their Raleigh apartment even as the complex has grown less safe and cars have been broken into. They had moved in 2023 and were reluctant to do so again; other places now cost $200 or $300 more per month. Leaving would mean trading one worry for another bill they can't afford. ...

Gen Z - if you feel pessimistic about the future, then why save up for anything?

Gen Z Wants to Save But Can't Stop Spending (August 2026)
www.newsweek.com

... Those in the Gen Z age bracket have shown a desire to work hard and save earlier than older generations, but this is coming into conflict with the spending habits of America's young adults.

Recent surveys show that the cost of living remains a leading worry across all ages, with one July poll finding that 95 percent of the country believes that the United States is in the midst of an affordability crisis.

However, it is Gen Z -- those born between 1997 and 2012 -- who appear to be holding off on saving for homes or other major milestones amid these concerns, but nevertheless engaging with the country's consumption-driven economy.

According to a recent report from the Bank of America Institute, Gen Z boasts "the lowest savings-to-spending ratio of any generation," meaning it typically spends far more than it has in accumulated savings each month. ...

You've got lots of tats, but no IRA?

You're doing it all wrong.

The approach of Gen Z seems to be ...

If you feel pessimistic about the future, then why save up for anything?

Of course, that then might raise a larger question...

Why might Gen Z be so pessimistic about heir future?

I don't know. But if you give up on the future, you have none.

Watched two YouTube videos of two knowledgable critics of AI, and yeah, there is a distinct possibility of a major market crash and some banks may have major problems as well.
What happens when you elect and then re-elect an ignorant, greedy fascist to run your economy...and your military.

They don't care about you.

Z - 14 to 29... Most individuals I knew, including me, were not making much money at that age, so no too surprising. Of course back then we didn't have credit cards which is much of the problem, IMO of the younger gen.

Nobody wants to work a 40 hour job that doesn't pay enough to cover your bills and rent.

Greed is killing America.

Republicans are killing America.

Corporate profits are at an all time high.

CEO salaries and bonuses are in the multi million, hundreds of millions.

Employ pay is stagnant. Companies are laying off thousands.

The word of the day is taxes. Increase them on the wealthy if this country wants to escape the third world status we've sunk into.

As a boomer, my future is looking FAR better than theirs. But I'm much closer to the end of my time.

I'm pretty pessimistic about THEIR future as well.

I have 3 kids who are Gen Z. 2 are out in the working world and 1 in college.

I worry about them a lot. The cost of housing is most of the worry......we need a massive adjustment in that space but that's a painful adjustment.

Gratz on surviving the Churn as long as you have. That in itself is quite an accomplishment.

And I'm betting it didn't happen by complaining
about the previous generation or a lot of magical thinking.

I'm betting that in the PAST you had to make some sacrifices and put in the work and blood sweat and tears and maybe some actual planning and saving for the FUTURE that is providing you with the lifestyle you are enjoying in the NOW.

Boomers lived through the best of times.

Gen Z will get to live through the worst of times.

The worst has just begun.

The next decade of American history will either be digging ourselves out of this mess Trump and republicans have made or cementing our failed nation status.

It's challenging to look forward to a future when those currently in power are embracing chaos and cruelty in order to create a future based on a fascist past.

Boomers did have the advantage of an economy stoked by the success of defeating Fascism around the world in WWII by the Greatest and the Silent Gens, who to their credit joined in street protests against the moneyed Elite in cities all over the country.

We also grew up with a simple seemingly idyllic lifestyle of fresh food and mostly safe neighborhoods and schools (per the 70's thread).

But we also grew up with the Cold War; visions of nuclear explosions on B&W tvs, school Atomic Bomb Drills; sitting in hallways with hands over heads during the Cold War, as if that would help! (see Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, circa 1964).

The Korean War, the Vietnam War (aka 'Police Action'), and "I am NOT a Crook!" Richard Nixon's pre-Trump Election Rigging.

Heroes (we actually had heroes!) like JFK, MLK, RFK assassinated in the streets.

Which would be like seeing Obama and Bernie and AOC shot dead today.

Not to mention our own college kids murdered by nervous Natl Guards while protesting the War.

But we had other Heroes; Walter Cronkite and Bill Moyers who didn't give a flying F what politicians thought about them. John Glenn et al who braved the Final Frontier. (OK, and Star Trek, lol)

My first college English assignment was to write an essay on Modern Heroes, if there still were any. My subject was one of the survivors, Muhammad Ali, who was eventually offered a Deal to fight exhibitions for the troops if he'd only sign up. He gave up his best years to join, and lead, the Protest instead.

Unfortunately, it was the moneyed Elite who called the shots and elected Reagan, the Tea Party, Nutty Newty, and now Project25.

Of course, it's the whole Gen, who mostly opposed all that, who gets the blame now for what those same moneyed Elite are still doing now.... despite that most of the modern Gens also oppose them.

Well, except maybe in the last election, but many groups; Gens, racial groups, and even farmers and ranchers and truck drivers have now seen enough of these current Nixons their and Elitist backers.

Except nobody shot at Obama or Bernie or AOC.

I know it's hard but it's possible people will be writing essays on Heros and using the names of folks who were actually shot.

Reagan, Trump, Kirk...if we're going to use being shot as some sort of indicator of heroism.

Is that what you're doing?

That's what the Republican Party is doing.

Then learn to do something that does cover the costs of living. I have three children who work full-time jobs and have their own homes. The youngest graduated college in 2019. Two own and one still rents but they manage to live within their means, invest and still have a life.

The political figures I analogized to are popular modern liberals/progressives for their distinctive times.

That was the analogy, not whether someone died or not and should be made out as a Hero or not because of it; they are alike in that their political philosophy, not in their martyrdom.

But hey, as long as your kids made it, every kid should make it and no kid should ever ha#25 ve a helping hand because of disease, discrimination, race, gender, or education possibilities... right, Billy Joe Bob?

You trolls are adorable.

It's incredible how you and Turds always agree on politics.

You're both far rightwing Trumpers, it's just you're too much of a coward to admit it.

Your children will grow up in the America Turds is creating.

Best of luck to them!

making fun of you isn't agreeing on politics nor is it an indication of being a far rightwing trumper.

Of course it is.

Based on your comment you've judged Turds to be a good father.

Unless you know the truck stop glory hole, Ken Paxton supporting MAGAt in real life, your judgement comes from his truck stop glory hole, Ken Paxton supporting MAGAt comments here on the DR.

Which you clearly agree with.

You're too much of a coward to tell Turds his voting for Paxton and Trump are destroying America, because you're a beta cuck and you see Turds as an alpha male you can look up to.
