a manufacturing defect or a maintenance defect?
Or airframe stress exceeding design. It may well have come off in the dive, as opposed to causing it.
If it did detach, they will find it somewhere.

It's possible it froze and broke off given forces to move.
They requested higher altitude. But for some reason flew right into a very small cell of questionable weather.

But looking at the video stills it appears in tact, though shrouds around engine was missing.

Also the copilot stated 60 degree banking. Which sort of indicates all 4 corners were together at least at the start of the "descent"

The max maneuvering speed for this plane was 205kt, and for sure it wasn't close to GW, so less than this.
It was travelling at ~400kts, which is ok in no turbulence conditions, but looking at the radar they went right through a cell at time of "DESCENT".
So yeah, the horizontal stabilizer and elevator might have failed.

I sure don't see a horizontal stabilizer on the Lear in this photo taken from video milliseconds before it hit the ground:

Just 6mm of ice increases the stall speed by 40 knots. The aircraft departs controlled flight before stall warnings engage. If you are flying on autopilot the aircraft is continually adjusting its trim and you can't feel what's happening until it's too late. The AP disconnects and hands you an uncontrollable aircraft.
Once you go past m0.81 you're in an overspeed, as you m0.9 you're into T-tail separation speeds. If you pull hard the tail "over-g's" surfaces leave the airframe.
The Flydubai 737 MAX 8 hit m0.96 in its dive and survived, but it's not a T tail design and quite a bit tougher.

I was reading about this on and off today, amazed to learn that despite modern advances in weather radar and aviation, this could still happen in such a catastrophic manner.
I stopped when I heard the recording of the pilots with the flight controller. Are we really such a ghoulish society that we need or desire to hear the absolute terror of people who are realizing they are about to die?

I thought weather was most significant when landing or taking off.
I figured mid-flight weather was easy to avoid by flying above or around it.

High altitude crystal icing can occur without visible bad weather or rain. You can look like you're flying over bad weather and still ice up and fall out of the sky. Especially if you are on autopilot the entire time and can't feel the trim changes.

In air traffic control audio, a crew member can be heard declaring an emergency, shouting "we are in an overspeed condition descending 20,000ft per minute", before saying, "we are going to crash into the ground".
About 35 seconds after the initial mayday announcement, the last remark from the cockpit appears to be "we're out of time".

It was a plane. It only became missile after it was blasted by a targeted non-nuclear EMP system protecting Mar-a-Lago a scant 6 miles away from the crash site.

"If it had been hit by an EMP, why were the radios still working as they plummeted 30-something thousand feet in about a minute?"
If the EMP blast knocks out the primary generator, some components could switch over to a dedicated main and/or emergency DC chemical battery, which lack integrated microchips or complex circuitry for an EMP to affect.

Doesn't bode well for those types of jets.
Have any Learjets been know to fall out of the sky before? AIs answer:
"Yes, Learjets have experienced sudden, rapid plunges from the sky before, caused by a variety of distinct aerodynamic, structural, or environmental factors."
"While the Learjet family is renowned for its high thrust-to-weight ratio and ability to climb aggressively to high altitudes, its unique "T-tail" design and short wing profiles make it notoriously unforgiving when pushed beyond its operational boundaries."
That's it then. I guess I won't be flying in a Learjet anymore.

LOL then explain like I'm five why a radio wouldn't be fried by an EMP and would magically work on a secret battery... Hand held radios may still work. Radios inside a faraday cage will still work. An aircraft airframe acts like a faraday shield. Depends on electrical systems and power source. EMP tests have shown that while cockpit displays or lights might momentarily flicker or dim, core analog and digital systems generally remain operational or experience only brief glitches.
The actual answer is it may or may not work depending on the aircraft. Civilian aircraft are hardened to survive lightening strikes. In a military EMP hardened aircraft the odds of it working go way up.
Aircraft and vehicles are tested at Sandia National Laboratories / Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM. I have been inside the test building there.
It is the largest all-wood and glue-laminated structure in the world. It was built completely out of wood, fiberglass, and wooden bolts so that metal wouldn't interfere with the electromagnetic pulse reflections.

You wanted it to be "explained to you as if you were a 5-year old", so I figured that you would be better suited playing with AI.
Come back to me when you want me to explain it to you as if you were a grown-up, although it seems that Donnerboy has already done that by asking AI and passing along some pretty good info. Bringing up a faraday cage is sort of a dead giveaway for it being AI-generated.

Sounds to me like you should be more worried about the plane than the pilots. Sounds like the pilots had no chance when their plane decided to fall out of the sky.
Apparently they don't even make those planes anymore.
All Learjet 60s should probably grounded during severe weather until they at least figure out what happened and if they are at least safe to fly in severe weather.

#58 | POSTED BY PUMPKINHEAD
It was some AI.
But I was an electronics tech and radio(active) man in a former life.
A "faraday" is just a metal cage. Normally it is grounded.
The fuselage of a plane is also a metal cage and is usually designed to withstand a lightning strike and using special shielding and shunting.
Anything that is attached to line wires (not shielded) or long whip antennas is at risk during an EMP as a electron wave is created by a pulse traveling along any wires that create thousands of volts of electricity. If not properly shielded shortened or grounded those circuits will be fried.
From AI:
Said a little better ...
military aircraft (such as bombers or fighters built to carry nuclear payloads) are heavily hardened against EMPs using specialized shielding, lead-lined components, and strict military standards. Standard commercial airliners have some lightning and surge protection, but most are not specifically hardened against a high-altitude nuclear EMP, a vulnerability also noted by aviation enthusiasts on PilotsofAmerica on
