Shouldn't focus just on prisons.
Schools. Housing. Jobs.
Prevention is always cheaper than treatment.

Not that we shouldn't do better in prisons, but intervening after they're in prison has a closing the barn doors after the horses have bolted feel to it.

I watched several hours of the presumably BBC series on the history of early Christianity, from Jesus to Constantine, in the hotel room last night. Basically a story of, if you can't beat em, join em. And over centuries, co-opt them. A common story throughout history.

I didn't know the pivotal role of the superstitious Emperor Diocletian, who didn't have the stomach for endless persecution, no pun intended, and flipped from persecuting Christians to tolerating Christians on his deathbed. I have to wonder if Christians at the time believed as he did that his grievous cancer was a punishment by G-d for murdering so many Christians.

Fascinating stuff how Constantine re-imagined the Roman Empire as somehow both Christian and Pagan alike, so as to not alienate or inflame tensions. No crosses on Constantine's Christian monuments, for example.
