Live: Kamala Addresses DNC

Vice President Kamala Harris finished a boisterous and enthusiastic four days of the Democratic National Convention by giving her acceptance speech as the party's nominee for president.

Comments

I was wondering when this topic would appear ...

:)

Sounds like a president. Ready on day one.

#2 | Posted by rcade at 2024-08-22 11:03 PM

#2 - Agreed. I'm as excited tonight as I was when Obama accepted the nomination. I feel like I'm watching an important moment in history.

@#2 .. Sounds like a president. ...

Yeah.

Proud, prepared, ready, and up to the challenge.

#4 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-08-22 11:10 PM

That person that's been telling me around here that Harris can't make a speech... is out of his F'n mind!

One of the best I've ever heard and seen, especially given it was her big introduction to a lot of voters.

Fired up and ready to go vote!

#5 | Posted by Corky at 2024-08-22 11:14 PM

When people were arguing Biden should step aside as the candidate, I had no idea Kamala Harris could come in this strong. On message and character and delivery and focus, she is rock solid.

There's still an election to be won but Trump has a huge fight on his hands at a time when he's looking exhausted, demotivated and incoherent.

#6 | Posted by rcade at 2024-08-22 11:20 PM

She done good!

#7 | Posted by memyselfini at 2024-08-22 11:20 PM

- excited tonight as I was when Obama accepted the nomination.

PBS ran a video before her speech from 15 years ago where Gwen Ifill called Kamala Harris the, "female Barack Obama".

That was AWESOME! Wow!
I feel like we reached a turning point in this country tonight. A focus on what we as a nation are about, our values, our principles.
Brilliant!

@#6 ... When people were arguing Biden should step aside as the candidate, I had no idea Kamala Harris could come in this strong. ...

You and me both.

Back in the old days before the RNC, I was looking at Pres Biden as a candidate. And I had question marks.

But then Pres Biden did not proffer his ~passing of the baton~ decision until after the RNC finished, leaving the GOP with, well, Sen Vance. Whoa, that was an awesome strategic move on the part of Pres Biden.

Now the GOP is stuck with a fmr Pres Trump and a Sen Vance.

Neither of whom seem to have a clue how to deal with their diminishing polling numbers.

imo, of course.

#10 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-08-22 11:30 PM

I didn't want Biden to drop out because I didn't think Harris could win. She's proven me very wrong. And Waltz is great.

I appreciate the big tent message. They had great conservative speakers.

#11 | Posted by horstngraben at 2024-08-22 11:34 PM

Lol.

You need to separate your hopes from reality.

Kamala dropped out after exactly the same fanfare in 2019 with our a vote.

And total destruction in the den debate.

The reality of Democracy vs Autocracy.

I have a hard time watching pep rallies as I am a short attention span "get to the point" guy.

But Kalama, her sister Maya and republican Adam Kinzinger all had great speeches.

#17 | Posted by a_monson at 2024-08-22 11:54 PM

OK, what matters going forward is...

The polling.

And then the voting.

Of course, the voting then also begs the question....

When does early polling start in the various states?

So, it no longer seems to be the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November (and, fwiw, google's calendar does not let me set that date. But an old, somewhat obscure Windows app {Windates} allows me to set it. So, google seems to be rather stupid in this aspect.) But I digress.

Election Day and early voting are closer than we may think.

This is going to get intense.

#18 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-08-23 12:04 AM

@#19 oops

When does early polling start in the various states?

- should be -

When does early voting start in the various states?

#19 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-08-23 12:06 AM

When does early voting start in the various states?

PA starts early voting Sept. 6th, ... 14 days from today.

#20 | Posted by tonyroma at 2024-08-23 12:24 AM

@#20

thx.

I knew there was a state that started sooner than later, I just was not able to get my search engine of choice to cough it up.

OK, that aside...

Pennsylvania could be interesting.

It is currently wallowing in the quagmire of MoE.

I just read about a fascinating poll out of Vermont. For voters 65 and older 61% would vote for Harris tomorrow because the deem Dotard's physical and mental health to be poor. I know that's Vermont, but that's also a GQP sweet spot group. Probably one too many shark or Hannibal Lechter stories.

The DNC Danced Around a Key Harris Weakness. Now Jerome Powell Takes It On
www.newsweek.com

... Vice President Kamala Harris' greatest political weakness " the economy " took a backseat at a Democratic National Convention framed largely around joy, vibes and excitement. Now it will fall to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to provide some clarity when he delivers a highly anticipated speech on Friday. ...

#24 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-08-23 12:47 AM

@#24

Yeah, but the Fed Chair's appearance at Jackson Hole is usually quite hyped up.

Yet the response to his speech is typically more along the lines of ... well... ho-hum.

My current guess of what Chmn Powell might say would be along the lines of... ~we'll continue to watch the data and react according to the data.~ Much as he has said previously.

#25 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-08-23 12:51 AM

@#9 ... That was AWESOME! Wow! ...

Yeah.

She's got game.

#26 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-08-23 12:55 AM

VP Harris' next aim should be...

Transitioning all this hype into voters going to the polling stations and casting their votes.

She needs those votes, not only at the top of the ticket, but she also needs those votes on the down-ticket State races.

Will she be successful in that endeavor?

#27 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-08-23 01:10 AM

LAMP

"those votes on the down-ticket State races."

Speaking of which, J.D. Vance would lose two jobs in one election.

Dems have a massive voter turnout/ground game and offices in swing states. Trump's are few and far between.

The Harris campaign has $280 million in ad reservations already paid for. Trump has half that amount.

Turnout for Harris will help those down ballot candidates she'll need to get legislation passed.

BTW, a focus group of 8 undecided eastern Pennsylvania voters were interviewed tonight after the convention.

6 said they'd now vote for Harris, 1 Trump, and 1 still undecided.

The more people get to know about her, the more they see her as president and commander in chief. Her coattails will rock, IMO.

#29 | Posted by AMERICANUNITY at 2024-08-23 02:04 AM

AU

That's true. People do like to vote for the candidate they perceive to be the winner.

People in Trump's orbit are saying (on FOX) that he's become despondent and reclusive. And lacking energy. And that he's angry at Melania. Or just plain angry at the world in general, especially the wealthy donors (after all he's done for them) who are deserting a sinking ship.

I'd like to say it's curtains for Trump, but one can never tell when he's going to adopt Putin's example of how to win elections.

#30 | Posted by Twinpac at 2024-08-23 02:51 AM

if the Demoxrats rxplain Projrct 2025 clearly enough without leaving any room for Reump/Vance or any other Republicans a way to slither away drom it like the snakes idn't know what is in itway the corrupt majotity's power. Iy will require careful analysis of that immense document and then hard hi.hitting ads explaining it to voters. It will repel even Republican voters but sneaky Republicans are good at playing dumb and like, Nazis after WWII, and WWII, pretend "they, didn't know what is in the dovument even though they helped write it. It will be the job of making sure every American ubderstand what they are trying to sneak past America; if they do the Republican Party could go the way of the Whigs which would be great for America!

#31 | Posted by danni at 2024-08-23 06:40 AM

I keep saying it. Kamala will win by 7 points. At least. It's already set in stone and trump will continue.to dwindle into the abyss of hate and lies. He's done. He's defeated. This will be a major rebuke of all things trump come November. We haven't even gotten to the huge news that will come by the 2nd or 3rd week of October. :) yes there will be a huge surprise that will raise Harris even further. Going to be so much fun to see.

#32 | Posted by NOTGOINGBACK at 2024-08-23 08:10 AM

DANNI

Trump can point his finger at the Heritage Foundation for releasing the details of Project 2025. Whatever they were thinking (or not thinking) put Trump back on his heels and in a defensive position. Now his history of disingenuous lies and denials has come back to bite him.

Frankly, it put Trump back on his heels in a defensive position. They inadvertently provided the Harris campaign with a seemingly never-ending stream of Trump's anti-American, anti-Democracy game plan that has ever been conceived.

It was enough to gag a magot. And they were so proud of it, too. I can't even imagine why they thought this idea was going to get Trump elected. I can only assume the authors of this revolting document were encased in a bubble of exuberance and spent their time high fiving each other.

#27 | Posted by LampLighter

The question isn't will she be successful in that endeavor but will we:

Michelle Obama
@MichelleObama

What an inspiring and historic night--a true representation of what it means to be an American.
@KamalaHarris delivered an impassioned and powerful speech tonight that showed the country and the world that she is ready to lead us forward.

She did her part with grace, strength, and determination. And now, it's up to us, regardless of how we identify politically, to do the same. Each of us must do what we know in our hearts is right.

We must vote like our lives depend on it. We must rally our neighbors and communities. And we must start now. Don't wait. We can't let this momentum die down.

Because there is only one choice for us in this election--and that is the next President of the United States, @KamalaHarris!

#34 | Posted by Gal_Tuesday at 2024-08-23 08:31 AM

With the caveat of she hasn't won yet, some of us saw Kamala's potential long before last night:

Marc Polymeropoulos
@Mpolymer

My friend @djrothkopf has been singing Harris' praises for months. He was-literally-the only one of the DC blob to do so. I was very skeptical. Very. So were so many others, I imagine. Well here it is, the mea culpa ... .David was 100% right. (Last time I will ever say that )

#35 | Posted by Gal_Tuesday at 2024-08-23 08:56 AM

What a contrast from a month ago. The Melon Felon ran America and Americans down, talked ish about the country, made it sound like America was in decline, on its last legs, when the truth is exactly the opposite.

I went to Costco and out to dinner yesterday, I didnt get shot, robbed, or raped. The MAGAts might believe Dotard's doom and gloom BS, but the majority of Americans will believe their eyes. Gas prices are down, inflation is under 3%, and wages are outpacing inflation. VPOTUS paints a more realistic picture of the way things are, and where we as Americans want to go. Her picture is positive and dare I say joyful. I've heard more than one political consultant say that the candidate with the positive message usually wins.

Yes fat orange Elvis poses a unique threat to this country and our democracy, and the surrogates did a fantastic job of chewing him and his party up leaving VPOTUS to spend most of her address talking about the future. Great speech, she is a far better speaker than I remember from 2020, I've watched it twice and enjoyed it just as much the second time.

#36 | Posted by _Gunslinger_ at 2024-08-23 09:12 AM

Like I have always said ... The Greatest Show on Earth!

And Kamala and the DNC did not disappoint.

#37 | Posted by donnerboy at 2024-08-23 11:23 AM

It's already set in stone and trump will continue.to dwindle into the abyss of hate and lies. He's done. He's defeated. This will be a major rebuke of all things trump come November.

It's not over until it's over!

It's not over until the fat man cries Fraud! and then commits electoral delegates fraud and then calls the Georgia Secretary of State and asked him to commit fraud by "finding" 11780 votes and then incites a violent mob to attack the US capital to hang the VP and THEN loses his frivolous election lawsuits 60 some times.

Then it's over.

Sorta.

#38 | Posted by donnerboy at 2024-08-23 11:34 AM

Kamala said all the right things. It's all she had to do. She was definitely more coherent than Trump. Maybe she'll work her way into being a leader.

#39 | Posted by lee_the_agent at 2024-08-23 12:21 PM

Harris's biggest obstacles to winning the EC are her gender and ethnicity.

Is America ready for a female president of Southeast Asian/Jamaican heritage?

I bet that scares a lot of European Americans.

#40 | Posted by ClownShack at 2024-08-23 12:31 PM

-Is America ready for a female president of Southeast Asian/Jamaican heritage?

If they don't hate her? Yes, they are.

She just needs to keep the hate index at a low level. Something Hillary couldn't do.

A non-hated democrat running against a very hated republican......continue going down this path of keeping it framed that way.

#41 | Posted by eberly at 2024-08-23 01:14 PM

Trump cannot change the optics of reality that he's a convicted felon for defrauding the state of New York and a civilly responsible sexual abuser, while Harris is a prosecutor whose only job as an adult has been in service of The People, prosecuting criminals like Trump except for her 4 years in the US Senate - again in service of the people of California.

Trump is not going to be able to turn around this particular truth.

#42 | Posted by tonyroma at 2024-08-23 01:28 PM

She just needs to keep the hate index at a low level. Something Hillary couldn't do.

As my son pointed out.. they had decades to spread lies propaganda and conspiracy theories about Hillary to try and bring down her poll numbers.

They even slipped once and said it out loud.

"Everybody thought Hillary Clinton was unbeatable, right? But we put together a Benghazi special committee, a select committee. What are her numbers today? Her numbers are dropping. Why? Because (now) she's untrustable. But no one would have known any of that had happened, had we not fought." -Kevin McCarthy September 2015

They only have 73 days to spread lies and conspiracies to try and trash Kamala. Good luck with that!

#43 | Posted by donnerboy at 2024-08-23 01:31 PM

I think if Harris loses in November, as is still quite possible, people may look back and say, man, the Democrats didn't really say a lot at this four day extravaganza, except that they were normal and Trump is not.

#44 | Posted by lee_the_agent at 2024-08-23 01:36 PM

43

I'm sure there is another "Benghazi special committee" working 24/7 to drum something up.

but it has to be good. but it doesn't have to be true.

Facts don't matter.......only beliefs.

#45 | Posted by eberly at 2024-08-23 01:38 PM

The Dems hit the Convention Ball out of the Park.

The GOP hosted Snoozefest 1979, behind the times in all
the ways that count.

This bodes very well, of course aided by Trump who just
'cannot help himself but melt down every evening they show
reruns of Kamala's and the DNC's convention.

BUT! (there is always a BUTT)... Beware the dirty tricks
and GOP shenanigans in all of the Battleground states.
Get out there, go door to door, but be VIGILANT about
policing those Voting Monitors, those state level instigators
that will seek to throw this election into the Dumpster yet again.

#49 | Posted by Corky at 2024-08-23 03:57 PM

I listened carefully for any lies or serious (non-standard political stuff) from Harris and there were none. She kept it checkable and exact, as a prosecutor would. She nailed it and she is striking terror in your wrinkled cold heart. She knows the ACTUAL fact checkers were going to be all over what she said, and that for us that matters. It was brilliant. What she said was honest, accurate, and fair.

#50 | Posted by YAV at 2024-08-23 04:02 PM

Accusing others of the evils you do is a long-held Trump Con-Artistry tactic.

'

"The phrase "accusation in a mirror" was introduced as "l'accusation en miroir" in an adult continuing education 1970 book by French social psychologist and author Roger Mucchielli.[2]

The book, Psychologie de la publicite et de la propagande, was written against the backdrop of the protests of 1968, and discussed the history of the social psychology behind publicity and propaganda.

The book's intended purpose included deepening understanding of psychology and the human sciences, and increasing the reader's ability to recognize true values and to resist manipulation.

In the conclusion of his book, Mucchielli likened his seminar to the work of Columbia University's professor, Clyde R. Miller, who established the Institute for Propaganda Analysis (IPA) in 1937, to educate others to be able to identify propaganda techniques in order to thwart them."

'

"Mucchielli described accusation in a mirror as imputing to the adversaries the intentions that one has oneself and/or the action that you are in the process of enacting. Mucchielli explained how the perpetrator who intends to start a war will proclaim his peaceful intentions and accuse the adversary of warmongering; he who uses terror will accuse the adversary of terrorism.

In this section in which Mucchielli describes accusation in a mirror, he referred to the work of Serge Tchakhotine[21][22] who was known for his opposition to the Bolshevik regime (1917"1919) and who warned against the rise of fascism in Europe in the 1930s.

Tchakhotine's work on how to resist propaganda, like that of Mucchielli, was informed by Sigmund Freud, Ivan Pavlov, and Frederick Winslow Taylor.

Mucchielli also referred to the work of Joseph Goebbels"the Nazi Party's chief propagandist.[4][8][9]"

en.wikipedia.org(AiM,or%20intentions%20to%20one's%20adversaries.

It's a dangerous rwing propaganda; in the psychology of personality, it's a form of Projection commonly found in Narcissists.

Funny! There is nothing about a "Kamala" that ever made sense. She is a hired hand of the party of corruption, hate and racist divide. Even the Kennedys see the light.

#53 | Posted by Robson at 2024-08-23 06:26 PM

#52 Very perceptive recognizing that the party of lies and racism would try pin those labels on Trump.

#54 | Posted by visitor_ at 2024-08-23 06:55 PM

Democrats have never ever touted patriotism or national unity or a better country for all citizens.

Their sole mission is always to make more victims, make more poor people and make them all Democrats. But they do create a ruling class of corrupt Dem elites who hate independence and free thought for average people.

Freedom for Democrats is solely about abortion and killing babies instead of true freedom of opinion.

Because obviously you didn't watch it.

On the first day of the Democrat convention, the speakers mentioned Donald Trump 147 times. I guess you obviously didn't watch it either. Who needs policy or a platform if you have Trump hate?

#64 | Posted by visitor_ at 2024-08-24 12:35 PM

"I guess you obviously didn't watch it either."

So you admit you didn't bother to watch it and are only posting someone else's talking points.

Got it!

I admit it was a tough thing to balance but I thought they did a good hob of it. And you know that if they didn't talk about the weird orange elephant in the room that too would have been very strange.

We can tell they did a good job. You know how?

It got under Trumpy's orange leather hide and made the weird orange elephant go on a rant and a rampage on his untruthful antisocial webpage.

I watched as much as I could. The DNC was flat-out excellent. What a HUGE difference between the RNC's (which I also watched as much as I could). The DNC was, hands down, MILES above the sad, angry, bitter, stodgy, and plodding RNC. Magnitudes better talent, too.

Rcade,

"There's still an election to be won"

There's still a debate.

Don't you think we need to hear more about what she's intending on doing straight from the horses mouth without prewritten speeches?

#69 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2024-08-24 05:20 PM

" Don't you think we need to hear more"

Why? You certainly don't.

She could say EVERYTHING you'd want her to say, and you'd still vote for a guy who regularly breaks the majority of The Ten Commandments.

Don't believe me? Name three he follows.

#70 | Posted by Danforth at 2024-08-24 05:33 PM

Dan,

"She could say EVERYTHING you'd want her to say"

But she won't.

Why do you post straw men and expect people to respond to it?

I'm not wasting my evening with you.

#71 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2024-08-24 05:48 PM

"But she won't"

That's your conclusion before hearing a word? Well, thanks for proving my point about your prejudice.

By the way, have you found any three Commandments Trump follows yet?

#72 | Posted by Danforth at 2024-08-24 06:05 PM

What will people do without Trump to talk about?

They might have to actually talk about issues.
