Trump Threatens to Retake the Panama Canal

Incoming US president Donald Trump on Saturday slammed what he called unfair fees for US ships passing through the Panama Canal and threatened to demand control of the waterway be returned to Washington.

One new ACP measure, which aims to discourage late cancellations and no-shows, issues a hefty surcharge, equivalent to 250% of the reservation fee, if the vessel does not arrive within seven days of the booked date.

Are you suddenly having problems with capitalism? The canal is a product. Supply and demand determines the value of the product.

If you don't want to pay the fees then don't use the canal. Or negotiate for lower prices.

Canada manipulates maple syrup prices. That is not a reason to invade them and make them the 51st state.

Yeah.

Pres-elect Trump seemed to want to put himself into the news coverage over the Holidays, his usual craving for attention.

Yet, what he seems to have done instead is call attention to the Trump-based activities in Panama (see #29).

And not call attention to them in A Good Way.

A faux pas?

Time will tell.

But until then, it is starting to look like Pres-elect Trump using the power of the Presidency for his own personal financial purposes.
