Court Rejects Alabama House Map, Unfair to Black Voters
A panel of federal judges on Tuesday rejected Alabama's effort to use a new voting map for the November midterm elections, saying that the districts discriminated against Black people and could not be used so shortly before a vote.

It's nice having the Supreme Court explicitly say racism is okay.

The three most potent impediments to progress and justice in America: The filthy oligarchs, Republican Senators (and their goddam six-year terms), and the non-elected SCOTUS politburo who are appointed for life.
For life.

... The state is likely to appeal the decision directly to the Supreme Court, which last month ruled that a Louisiana congressional map drawn to create two majority-Black House districts was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. ...
SCOTUS does not seem to be the least bit concerned about the active return by Republicans to the Jim Crow era.
Indeed, SCOTUS seems to be actively encouraging that transition.

Legal,
"So the fix is in"
Depends on who you ask.
The US Supreme Court and the VA Supreme Court are saying "the fix is out"

The important one of the two cited is SCOTUS.
And SCOTUS has shown itself to be more politically involved, instead of judicially involved, of late.
imo, of course.

And why would Alabama want to indulge in racism so late in the election cycle, other than to rig things for the far right, totally white.

Hugh,
I do agree this reversal is likely going to have a negative impact on black representation.
But four years ago Virginia adopted a redistricting system that many people on both sides praised as fair and balanced.
Then this year Democrats suddenly decided the maps were "unfair" and pushed for districts that heavily favored Democrats, reducing Republicans to one district while Democrats controlled the other ten.
You know good and well that does not reflect Virginia's actual political makeup.
So now other states are following VA's lead, with the support of the Supreme Court ruling, and moving back in the opposite direction.
Democrats have only themselves to blame.

Democrats did not decide the maps were "unfair" you ----. It's clearly in response to Trumpys attempt to game the system in his favor.
Democrats, citing a need to counter aggressive Republican-drawn maps in states like Texas and Missouri, used their majorities to pass a constitutional amendment and a new congressional map designed to give Democrats 10 seats while isolating Republicans to just 1.
The 10-to-1 map was designed to be temporary and would have only lasted through the end of the decade.

Gerrymandering for political reasons legal but it's only a problem when Republicans do it. Gerrymandering for racial reasons is illegal but mandatory to favor minorities. This assumes voters favor voting for members of their own race. But then we have white Democrats winning in black districts running against black Republicans.

Perhaps the reason is more why the Republicans do it, as opposed to the apparent lame ~both sides do it~ argument.
To wit ...
U.S. Appeals Court Strikes Down North Carolina's Voter ID Law (2016) www.npr.org
...The appeals court noted that the North Carolina Legislature "requested data on the use, by race, of a number of voting practices" -- then, data in hand, "enacted legislation that restricted voting and registration in five different ways, all of which disproportionately affected African Americans." The changes to the voting process "target African Americans with almost surgical precision," the circuit court wrote, and "impose cures for problems that did not exist." The appeals court suggested that the motivation was fundamentally political -- a Republican legislature attempting to secure its power by blocking votes from a population likely to vote for Democrats....

Democrats are willing to end gerrymandering. Republicans are not.
We already have voter ID. It's called registering to vote. And it works great. People who want voter ID are either fascists who want obstacles to democracy or fools who think the lack of voter ID is causing problems because they got brainwashed by fascist propaganda

The two Parties are bad in enough in being too much the same without exaggerating the problem; it's bad enough as it is, but there are definitely more Dems that will support Campaign Finance Reform than there are GOPhers.
And there's nowhere enough third party voters to change anything at all.

Under the pretext that they govt will issue voter ID cards at no cost to the voter, yes. (poll tax)
But Republican politicians don't want that, because more votes equals they lose.

Looks that way, especially because of Pres Trump and his fading support outside all but his cult base.
The Republicans look to be desperate to overcome the negative views that Pres Trump has brought of the Republican Party.

- Since the Democrat members of the oligarchy don't want CU reversed it won't be.
"While a large majority of ultra-wealthy megadonors and billionaires do back the Republican Party, the broader American oligarchy encompasses wealthy individuals who fund both major political parties.
Data indicates a partisan split among the richest Americans
Republican-leaning billionaires: Historically and in recent election cycles, the majority of the top 100 wealthiest Americans who actively engage in federal campaign spending have favored Republicans and conservative causes.
High-profile tech and business moguls like Elon Musk have become significant financial backers of the Republican party, advocating for deregulation and lower taxes on capital gains.
Traditional conservative donors like the Koch family network also play a prominent role in funding GOP-aligned candidates and policy groups"

As was mentioned, there's a hell of a lot more Dem votes for Campaign Finance Reform than there are Republican votes.

Shall we address the elephant in the room?
The biggest loophole in the US tax code is GRATs, aka Grantor Annuity Trusts. GRATs make the inheritance tax a laughingstock, by allowing unlimited amounts of money transferred from one generation to another. The trust is set up, the money is placed, and the owner simply ... disclaims it! It goes to the next heir, tax-free. And every billionaire uses it, from Adelson to Soros to Thiel to Winfrey to Zuckerberg. Sheldon Adelson used it to transfer $8 billion to his kids, avoiding roughly $2.3 billion in inheritance tax.
And why isn't it repealed? Because, as one wag put it, "the only people affected are the members of the political donor class"
Translation: don't expect GRATs to be repealed anytime soon.
