The defense secretary described the vaccine requirement, which he lifted in April, as an "absurd, overreaching" mandate.

Hegseth proudly ended the flu vaccine requirement for the military. Following this idiocy, only 40% of new trainees got vaccinated. There's now a flu outbreak at an AF facility. A new recruit has died, though it is not clear if it was from flu. Now, the flu vaccine is again required there.

More: At the time, many lawmakers, including some prominent Republicans, expressed puzzlement and dismay at Mr. Hegseth's decision.

"The reason it was mandatory was to enhance readiness," Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi, the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said shortly after the new policy was announced.

"You know, you do give up certain rights when you take the oath," said Mr. Wicker, who is an Air Force veteran. "It's just part of it."

Unvaccinated soldiers are unfit to serve.

Hegseth is unfit to lead.

Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), Secretary of War Crimes Pete Hogsbreath must immediately be court-martialed by a panel of Flag Officers for "rank dereliction of duty during time of war," a level of poor performance so deficient that it amounts to criminal misconduct -- not mere incompetence or lack of experience.

A major flu outbreak has sickened nearly 160 troops at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas

Curious ... There are 24,000 troops at Lackland, or 0.6% caught the flu ..... how is this "major"? Its less than the general population which is around 5-20%..

"how is this "major"?"

Actual Math.

And the lack of a flu shot mandate.

How do you not understand that 160 getting the flu at the same outpost isn't typical?!?

In the aftermath of the outbreak, the Air Force issued an exception to the voluntary vaccine policy, requiring that all recruits at Lackland get flu shots as part of a broader effort to stem the virus's spread.

That's going to piss off the paste-eaters.

And this will wake it up again.

The Air Force secured a localized exception to the Pentagon's rule, temporarily reinstating mandatory flu vaccinations for all recruits at Lackland to restore unit readiness.

Why would the Air Force bother to reinstate a CONTROVERSIAL policy even "temporarily" if it did not affect military readiness?

I think it increases your likelihood of getting sick, which means it increases your chances of being unfit to serve.

But there's no inherent unfitness associated with it, ie it doesn't make one any less of a soldier/marine/sailor/airman.

It's just short sighted stupidity for someone who is too stupid to be anything but reactionary.

Of course, this f*&^ing idiot opens his mouth without an ounce of knowledge behind it.

Do those 24,000 troops live in one large building with one exposure exposing them all? No, it doesn't, dumbf*&^.

But I supposed you're too stupid to notice that the cases are localized in a single wing of recruits. Why? Because one of them had it and exposed the rest of them in common areas and sleeping quarters where it effectively spread.

Such is the problem with contagious diseases.

It only takes one to contaminate many others.

But to the point of this thread ...

Sec of Defense Hegseth has said he wants our military to be alert and responsive.

But if our military is in a hospital bed, sick with the flu, because of a policy Sec of Defense has proffered...

Well, what does that say about the forethought of Sec of Defense Hegseth in attaining his apparent goals?

Is he managing our Dept of Defense based upon his (and/or Pres Trump's) political goals, or is he managing the Dept of Defense based upon what is best for our Country's defense?

If the latter, how do our military in sick beds help our Country's defense?

A trainee in his sixth week of basic training died after falling ill on Friday and being taken to Brooke Army Medical Center, the Air Force said in a news release.

I guess it would put it to bed for anyone has little to no understanding of science or statistics. For those who do then there are some glaring weaknesses in the reporting. The thing that first jumped out at me is that the article is referencing the entire population of the base. A spokesperson for the Air Force has stated that the outbreak is "localized" to the base's basic training wing. I'm no vet so I'm assuming that the trainees do not generally intermingle with the rest of the troops on base. If that assumption is correct then the analysis in the article you posted is critically flawed because it is assuming a much larger population than what should be accounted for. It would be interesting to know what percentage of vaccinated vs non-vaccinated trainees.

If my assumption is incorrect and they do freely intermingle then the fact that the outbreak is isolated to only the new trainees is a strong indication that the vaccine is highly effective in preventing spread among the rest of the base which I assume has an extremely high vaccination rate.
