Unrepentant racist in his long Senate tenure, his racism cast in stone because of his youth?

Sounds like you answered your own question in the first part of the sentence. Let's check on this guy after some time in the public eye, or even where Platner shifts to before the election, if he wants to win, which politicians usually like to do. One exception might be GHW Bush's second campaign.
Politicians I admire who loved to win and kick political ass? One was Jimmy Carter, who ran a segregationist campaign to get elected governor of Georgia in 1970, a blatantly cynical move to attract the Wallace voters. The rest of his life, before and after, showed something different.
His presidential library, last I heard, mostly ignored his gubernatorial campaign.
On Robert Byrd:

In 1997, he had this advice for up-and-coming politicians: "Be sure you avoid the Ku Klux Klan. Don't get that albatross around your neck. Once you've made that mistake, you inhibit your operations in the political arena."
What goes around comes around, huh? Would you have suspicions about a 40-year-old nominally Democratic politician who willfully attended a Klan meeting with his pals in his youth?
I would.
Gee, a Russian psyops move to divide the lefties? A Mainechurian Nazi?
