That's My Dad! Gus Walz Charms Convention Viewers and Crowd

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz was onstage to accept his party's nomination for the vice presidency on the third night of the Democratic National Convention when attention quickly shifted toward the packed crowd, where his 17-year-old son stood up with tears in his eyes, pointed to the stage and declared: "That's my dad!" The emotional moment Wednesday night captivated viewers as Walz addressed Democrats as Vice President Kamala Harris's official running mate.

Walz and his wife shared in a statement to People this month that Gus, a high school senior, has a nonverbal learning disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and an anxiety disorder. They told the magazine that, like many families, it took time to figure out "how to make sure we did everything we could to make sure Gus would be set up for success as he was growing up."

They said it eventually became clear to them that his conditions are "his secret power" and described Gus as "brilliant" and "an excellent son and brother."

Gus's emotional reaction went viral as clips spread on social media with the hashtag #thatsmydad. For many watching, it became the highlight of Walz's speech.

"You know you've done well as a parent when your kids are as proud of you as Gus and Hope are of Tim Walz," Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) wrote on X.

"Tim Walz was 100 percent pitch perfect, grand slam, touchdown in every possible way," former Biden White House communications director Kate Bedingfield wrote on X. "And yet somehow Gus Walz was even better."

If you didn't choke up last night as the cameras switched between Governor Walz behind the podium and shots of his family in the audience, obviously in joyous disbelief that their husband and father was chosen to accept the nomination for the VPOTUS, maybe you should have your humanity checked.

I hadn't read about Gus Walz until last night after his dad's rousing speech/pep talk, but as I watched Gus's reactions and gestures, I texted my son to ask him whether he thought Gus might be on the Autism Spectrum, since my son was diagnosed as Asperger's in his late teens and works in mental health and recovery today. Afterwards when we found the People article mentioned above, he basically said, the things listed for Gus is basically analogous to having ASD.

But what came out even more was just the sheer love the Walz family shares with each other. They are the quintessential modern American family - figuring out a way to deal with life's curves while remaining grounded in a lasting love for each other and their community.

Those who questioned why Kamala Harris made Tim Walz her first big decision with the presidency in the balance should have had their questions answered by now. Coach is the perfect partner for Kamala and hopefully for America.

#1 The most unscripted thing about either convention. Yes, I cried. His parents did well raising him, as other parents have with special need children. So, team Gus here.

Here, you're making up stuff that I never saw. Trig was born with Downs Syndrome and I've never seen anyone making light of his condition. Trig became a topic due to his mother and the strange stories surrounding her pregnancy - something I was obviously guilty of myself that never should have been brought into the political realm.

With Barron, what I saw were people speculating whether he was on the Spectrum like Gus - is by different names - since his biological issues are shared by those who're ASD, if my son is correct. The only questions about Barron revolved around whether he was Asperger's, and that was due to how he appeared during his rare public appearances - along with the fact so little of his life was ever publicly shared unlike the Obama girls, Bush girls, Chelsea Clinton, and even Amy Carter - all children who grew up in and around the White House. People with or around autistic children recognize the obvious signs when they see them. Mentioning so isn't a criticism, it's an informed observation as long as no uninformed judgments are passed.

Even Melania pulling Barron back from the campaign involvement his father announced, even though Barron is 18 and supposedly free to make his own decisions as an independent young man is puzzling and appears to be a mother protecting her child from the undue scrutiny being involved in presidential politics would bring.

Every parent has every right to protect and love their children as they see fit. And when one does have a special needs child, those that do understand both the joys and frustrations inherent. Nothing to be criticized at all across the board, regardless of party. Children are precious, not political pawns for punditry fodder.

And to make clear for those who may not know, Asperger's people can be geniuses and savants - but they have other socialization issues and quirks most people don't have.

The best example of an Asperger's type would be the character Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. He's a physics genius but completely socially inept. Over the shows 12 seasons, the character questioned his friends and then tried to mirror them and replace his social anxieties with a more comfortable humanity that included feelings. I've watched my son deal with some of these same fears and anxieties as he's grown into a new husband and partner for his wife.

#6 | POSTED BY TONYROMA

That may be true but there is no "rule" against it. If you put your family in the political spotlight be prepared for some flack. Half of the country will love you and half will hate you. Part of your job is to prepare your children for that. The public is not always very kind. It's been that way from the very beginning with George Washington's step son.

Sun Tzu advised to "strike at what is weak." (Ukrainians just successfully used this tactic is why it comes to mind)

Unfortunately sometimes the spouses and children of the presidents, even though they did not choose that life, are often the weakest link and become political targets.

This, coming from a trumper, party of "Fkkk your feelings!" is hilarious.

Trump literally mocked a man with cerebral palsy.

Re 13

Which brings up a great point.

It's one thing when the hoi polloi say mean things about a candidate or his family.

It's an entirely different thing when a presidential candidate singles out and disparages individuals or groups who are not even involved in politics.

Like Gold Star families
Reporters
Election workers
Dead soldiers
Entire races or ethnic groups
Immigrants
Judges and lawyers
Women

Thats just off the top of my head. So I am sure I missed some.

Right wing bomb-thrower Ann Coulter took aim at Tim Walz's 17-year-old neurodiverse son, Gus, for crying while his father spoke at the DNC on Wednesday night.

The moment Gus got to his feet clapping, crying and pointing at his father was captured live on TV and prompted an outpouring of positivity for the teenager.

But it was also latched on to by elements of the online right, with Coulter writing "Talk about weird..." in a post on X Thursday. The Harris-Walz campaign has successfully been using the weird' description to describe Donald Trump and JD Vance.

However, she appeared to quickly delete the post after social media erupted with anger.

I guess my mind has been trained to ignore stupid demeaning posts that don't have anything of substance to bring to the discussion. I truly don't remember anyone of substance going after Trig's condition. As I said earlier, I certainly talked about Trig but it was always due to questioning his mother as his mother, based on stories going around then.

I am neither a liar - and Gracie knows this to be true from her own experience - and I certainly don't live under a rock. Before moderation, I didn't suffer fools at all, but I've never besmirched politicians' children. And I don't countenance it, and if I did see anything directed toward Trig's biology I must have dismissed those posting it.

I think it's obvious that Coulter didn't know about Gus' condition. When she found out, she deleted the post. When Gracie posted #6, I did a quick search and found what I already knew would be there: Reporting about pro-Trump folks posting snide things about Gus.

But that doesn't belong here if it spoils those few moments when we saw unfiltered love and emotion that was genuine and pure. I would rather celebrate the joy. Lord knows there's none to be found on The Nooner nor anywhere in Trumpworld unless it's connected to their perverse enjoyment of someone else's suffering.

Gus' unfettered and spontaneous display pride and love for his father was moving. A wonderful, loving family, including their now grown black lab shelter puppy Gov Walz promised Gus he could get if he won his race for governor.

Says a lot about who Tim Walz is to have such a loving family.

Trump is going to get rinsed by a blue tsunami on election night.

"Florida and Texas are in play this election, which means many other red states are as well."

I'd guess North Carolina will be the first. The GOP candidate for governor is a kook, famously saying "some people just need killin'"

Also, Iowa might be in play. And MO will stay red, but an abortion rights issue is on the ballot, so Josh Hawley is looking over his shoulder.

Other states with an abortion rights vote include MT (will help Tester), AZ (that, and Kari Lake will keep AZ blue), and NV.

FL has one, too, but with a million-registration advantage, Bat Boy (oops, sorry...Rick Scott) might eke out a win. Especially with Rhonda Santos counting the ballots.

Awww, the poor MAGAt basement dweller beta males like Mike Crispi, Annie Adam's Apple Colter, and the other broken Dbags on Elmo's Nazi site slamming Gus Walz' tears are secretly wishing that somebody in the world loved and celebrated their success the way that Gus did with his Dad. Those small, imasculated little eunuchs, which I'm sure includes more than a few of the fascists on this site have no love in their lives, and deserve none. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure if they, or you if you are one of them, fell down the stairs and broke your neck, nobody would miss you until somebody called 911 because they smelled your rotting corpse. Every MAGAt should just curl up and die.

MAGA faux alpha males are a bunch of whiny wussies. A neurodivergent child (or any child) crying because they love and are proud of a parent is not a sign of weakness. It's a sign of strong families and good parenting. You know this, but your cult like devotion to a conman won't let you admit it.

#30 | Posted by anton at 2024-08-23 07:37 AM

#29 - Let's see if there's a trend. 2020 was before Dobbs, and before Harris who has a wide lead over Dotaed with women, Hispanics, and blacks. This 5 point spread might be noise, but it would be delicious if it forced the fat orange diaped sharter to spend money in The state. Fat orange Elvis thought he was going to play in MN, and VA, word was they had already added them to their column, now the polls show her with an 8 to 10 point lead in MN and a widening lead in VA. A recent poll sbows Rosen up 18 in NV, thats coattails for you. I don't think TX is out of reach, a lot of Californians have ended up in TX for work, Allred, a horrible candidate, is only down 2, and Harris has only been the candidate for a month. As Dems in TX say, it's not a red state, it's a non-voting state. If this massive wave of volunteers can get Dem voters registered and out to vote, miracles could happen.

I call B.S. on that. What happened is Sarah Paloonietunes exploited Trig's birth claiming the "Democrats want to abort" people like Trig. Then she ran around bloating her image up as noble for having a raising a child like Trig... instead of aborting like a "librul wants you to do". Obamacare would have left the Trig's life in the hands of "death panels" and on and on and on...
Absolute nonsense. Most people who have special needs children keep and raise them unless it is extraordinary circumstances. If anything moving and assimilating them into the society schools and workplace is the progressive's idea. The cl0wns want to cut funding.
The DEI thingie the cl0wns are always beeching about? Hellllooooooooo who does it include?

Lookup Macnamara's folly if you want to see how Cl0wns regard young men like Guz Walz in particular.
