I see 3 motivations for a relatively open border where illegal entry is encouraged and rewarded. I'll start with establishment GOP and this goes back to the W years - Chamber of Commerce cheap labor. The pushback against W's lax border came from the right - Minutemen.
The other 2 motivations come from the left. Replacement theory and/or Cloward-Piven.
Both sides try to pander to Latino voters but a majority of Latinos who came here legally vote this crap as a slap in the face.

1. Overturn abortion-women have much less ability to choose when they get pregnant.

My first exposure to replacement theory was an article in a left wing publication (I think it was the Atlantic but I'm not positive about that). The gist of the article was that our minority population is increasing at a faster rate than our white population and given current voting trends will eventually create a permanent Dem majority. It's something that I'd seen touted gleefully by lefties over the years and I was honestly surprised that it somehow got branded as racist when Trump brought it up.
