Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, July 04, 2025

Water rescues and evacuations are underway in central Texas Friday morning after torrential sent river levels surging and triggering deadly flash flooding. At a news conference late Friday morning, Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly declined to specify the number of casualties or missing, but said authorities may do so Friday afternoon. Kerr County is about 75 miles west of Austin. Kelly said they have yet to identify most of the dead. "We're having to fingerprint them at the funeral home. One of them was completely naked, didn't have any ID on them at all," he said. Kerr County is home to many summer camps, and some of the children attending them are among the missing or stranded. At the news conference, a reporter pressed Kelly on why the camps had not been evacuated on Thursday after an advisory from the Texas Department of Emergency Management.

"No one knew this flood was coming," Kelly said. "We have floods all the time. This is the most dangerous river valley in the United States and we deal with floods on a regular basis. When it rains, we get water. We had no reason to believe this was going to be anything like what's happened here. None whatsoever."

"No one knew this flood was coming," Kelly said. "We have floods all the time."

Looks like this guy is walking both sides of the fence.

These children could have been saved. Everyone saw that weather coming.

But MAGA culture has a strange relationship with weather and predicting it.

The evidence is that they can't be bothered to predict it.

Too much money spent to justify the knowing.

And so everyone decided to forget that heavy rains, even hundreds of miles away, cause flooding downstream.

It's hardly "the new face" of anything.

And after the GOP's behavior after the killing of the MN state senators/reps, you don't have any room for that broad brush.

Maybe you should worry about being consistent in your own expressions of thought and leave the BS behind.

Now, after severe flooding in non-evacuated areas in Texas has left at least 24 dead with dozens more missing, including several young girls at a summer camp, Texas officials are blaming their failure to act on a faulty forecast by Donald Trump's new National Weather Service gutted by cuts to their operating budget and most experienced personnel.

At a press conference last night, one official said: "The original forecast we received on Wednesday from the National Weather Service predicted 3-6" of rain in the Concho Valley and 4-8" of rain in the hill country. The amount of rain that fell in these locations was never in any of their forecasts. Everybody got the forecast from the National Weather Service. They did not predict the amount of rain that we saw."

Fire all the officials. Fire everyone in that weather service office for making Trumpy look bad. And the neighboring offices too for good measure.

I realize honesty and facts are kryptonitebr />to douche bags but this is from the National Weather Service..

--"Initially, was no aggressive or stern warning about what has happened until it was actually happening, because this weather system stalled out. A couple days ago it was treated as a "hit or miss" scenario where rainfall was concerned. This system is actually circulating like a tropical low over Central TX, so radar doesn't always pick up the rain potential because of the spin."

Stalled weather systems dump rain.

River systems collect rainfall from many thousands of square miles.

I live in Texas and grew up with such things.

Trump's weather service takes it as a surprise so, as you said: "No stern warnings were issued".

The MAGA officials on the ground should have had more common sense.

The Trump weather service was criminally incompetent.

Stalled weather systems dump rain.

But the stall is unpredictable. Texas is infamous for flash flooding like this.

Whats interesting is I haven't seen any images of the water outside the standard floodzone for the rivers and streams.

The question I have, given this information was why is Mystic Camp built in the flood zone?

Seems like this sort of permitting shouldn't be allowed.

Stalls can be seen in real time. Flash flood warnings can be, and are, issued in real time, in advance of actual rain.

Before Trump butchered NOAA, of course.

I don't have it in me to make a snarky remark about this tragedy, and I think doing so is insensitive at best. Dozens of kids were killed by an unusually violent and unpredictable flash flood, and many others were traumatized. As a father, I can only imagine what those parents are going through. Camp staff too. Horrific.

It wasn't here in 2010, when a storm stalled and dumped a foot of rain. flooding square miles along the river.

But the NWA issued flood warnings, people evacuated, and there was only one loss of life in a metro area of millions.

It doesn't take much to know when a flood warning needs to be issued via all media.
