President Trump said on Sunday that the U.S. Navy will begin blockading ships from entering or exiting the Strait of Hormuz and intercept vessels that have paid tolls to Iran, after marathon talks in Pakistan failed to yield an agreement to end the war.

Mr. Trump also said he has instructed the Navy to "seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran," and that the U.S. would begin "destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Straits."

"Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!" he added.

At least two vessels that have traversed the strait have paid Iran fees in Chinese yuan to guarantee safe passage, analysts from Lloyd's List Intelligence said in a recent report. Analysts wrote that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps "has imposed a de facto 'toll booth' regime in the Strait of Hormuz, requiring vessels to submit full documentation, obtain clearance codes and accept IRGC-escorted passage through a single controlled corridor." Iran has indicated that it might seek to impose a toll on all ships passing through the strait under a long-term peace deal.

An escalation of the war.

If we can't have Hormuz, no one can have it.

This won't help Trump in the midterms.

#8 | Posted by Jpw"

I'm going to pretend that's a real question.

Enforcement of a naval blockade is not considered piracy as it is a lawful act under international law, provided it is conducted in accordance with established legal frameworks. Piracy, on the other hand, involves acts of robbery or violence at sea that are not authorized by any state.

#8 | POSTED BY JPW

A quick consultation with the machines indicates "piracy" is an act carried out by private parties.

A "privateer" is different, behaving piratically but operating with a "letter of marque" from a government. Think Sir Francis Drake. "Letters of marque and reprisal" have been and may still be issued by Congress under its Article 1 powers..

Re 8

I have recently re evaluated my understanding of the Pirates.

Pirates got a bad historical rap. (Mostly because they lost but also because they promoted the fear of pirates in the Golden Age to frighten their victims into not resisting thus saving pirate and civilian lives.)

Pirates during the "Golden Age of Piracy" (roughly 1650"1725) practiced and promoted several ideals that later became cornerstones of American democracy, such as egalitarianism, representation, and checks and balances. Operating outside the monarchical systems of Europe, they established, out of necessity, a "pirate democracy" that was, in some ways, more progressive than the society on land.

A "blockade" is an act of war. Which is why, during the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) what JFK established was technically a "quarantine" rather than a "blockade," therefore not an act of war under international law.

Well, you're anti-Jew schpiel is partly-correct this time.

Iran started a war in earnest with Israel on October 7th, one they've been waging for about thirty years with their support of terrorist attacks. And the US is allied with Israel (thank you Muslims for Trump! (Muslims For Trump: We Were A Deciding Factor link))

So if you think Israel's war against the government which directed terrorists to target 1,200 Israeli civilian men, women, and children for rape and murder is a not in self-defense, I suppose this blockade would similarly be invalid.

Not sure it would make it piracy, though, as no indication we're permanently taking anything from the owners. Just holding onto it for awhile.

Oh lawd the irony. Henry Every, the King of Pirates, the guy credited with kicking off the Golden Age of Piracy, was former Royal Navy, then an Atlantic chattel slave trader, known for luring other slave traders onto his ship, taking their slaves as.. well, slaves, and enslaving the traders too. He mutinied for not getting paid. When his crew made it to the Indian Ocean, whom had many people that had just fought in the Anglo-Mughal War, they pulled off the Capture of the Grand Mughal Fleet, then raped and tortured all the Muslim women to death that didn't jump overboard and commit suicide.

Was he so progressive he didn't charge a mark up for his white slaves? Details lost to history.

What does the distance from Jerusalem to Gaza have to do with anything? The Palestinians attacked those civilians right across the Gaza border.

BhNPDpS.jpg

How Hamas executed a paraglider attack on Israel
The main reason why the Hamas paragliders avoided getting shot down is that Israel likely couldn't detect them, said retired Marine Col. J.D. Williams, a defense policy researcher with the RAND Corporation.

"The paragliders would probably have flown very low " popping up to go over the border fencing and then flying low to the ground " staying under the radar coverage of Israeli air and missile defenses," Williams told Task & Purpose on Thursday. "In addition, those air and missile defenses, primarily the Iron Dome system, are optimized to detect fast-moving, high trajectory weapons " missiles and rockets " and are not tuned to pick up low-flying, slow-moving objects like paragliders."

Although counter-drone systems could engage paragliders, it is unclear how widely Israel deployed such systems before the Oct. 7 attacks or if they were positioned to stop incursions from Gaza, Williams said.

Even if counter-drone systems were in the area where Hamas launched its paraglider attacks, they still would have had the same challenges in detecting low-flying paragliders as other air and missile systems, he said.
https://taskandpurpose.com/news/hamas-paraglider-attack-israel/

Many of the same reason that Hormuz is a no-go zone right now. We can't spot the threats.

As far as 7 hours to stop the carnage, the estimate is 6,000 Palestinians participated in that day's festivities. Scattered across about 40 miles long and ten miles deep. You seem to have a very high opinion of Israeli effectiveness, if you think they should have been able to put an end to it in a few minutes. It takes our cops an hour + to put an end to shootings in just one of our schools.

Yeah of course, staff were trying to hide under bars and snack stands.

This raider group had trucks. The best reconstructions of what happened there is that Hamas didn't know there was a music festival. They saw people and attacked per their orders. Many Israelis fled into bomb shelters. Those turned into death traps. The Hamas group battled a Merkava IV that turned up and a cop who was given a carbine by the tank crew, and two IDF veterans that had showed up to party. They then formed a convoy and went back to Gaza down Rt 232 in pickup trucks and motorcycles. A gunship saw the convoy and did not engage it. It's the most "successful" part of the Hamas raid.

I'll break it down. What does the distance to Jerusalem have to do with it? The attacks were not on Jerusalem. The attacks were within ~2-5 minutes flight time from Gaza (@ 50 mph per hour, as noted by SitzKrieg, which is considerably faster than the speed of smell).

Israels border is heavily guarded so there shouldn't have been any surprises.
We have multiple ships near Hormuz, but we can't stop the attacks on ships or spot the attackers.

Plus, there have been testimonies that say there was a stand down order.
One soldier testifying to an order from somewhere in command does not a grand conspiracy sustain.
