Trump announces 'Project Freedom' will pause as US seeks a final deal with Iran
www.scrippsnews.com

... President Donald Trump said on Tuesday the U.S. would pause an effort it began on Monday to provide security for shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. He said the pause would give time to evaluate whether the U.S. could reach a lasting peace deal with Iran.

"We have mutually agreed that, while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom (The Movement of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed," the president wrote on social media.

The president said Pakistan and other countries had requested that "Project Freedom" be paused. ...

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Tuesday that Iran no longer controls the Strait of Hormuz. He said "hundreds" of ships from around the world are now lining up to pass through the waterway. ...

@#6 ... U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Tuesday that Iran no longer controls the Strait of Hormuz. ...

Huh?

WTF?!?!

If what Sec of Defense Hegseth says is correct, then why are there so few, if any, ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz?

Or is Sec of Defense Hegseth just lying (again?)?

Trump pauses effort to escort ships in Strait of Hormuz, citing deal progress
www.reuters.com

... U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he would briefly pause an operation to help escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, citing "great progress" toward a comprehensive agreement with Iran.

Hours earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had outlined the effort that began on Monday to escort stranded tankers out of the Gulf. The strait has been virtually shut since the conflict began, blocking some 20% of world oil supplies and igniting a global energy crisis. ...

Trump has not had a plan or goals for attacking Iran since Day 1. He is not "pausing" because of some deal with Iran that isn't going to happen. He's pausing because at this point continuing offensives strikes against Iran requires congressional approval under the War Powers Resolution. The fact that republicans in Congress continue to block holding an AUMF vote is a clear message that they do not support Trump's big Epstein distraction but don't have the balls to actually put their opposition on record. They'd rather just have Democrats force enforcement of the 60 day limit. Even those like Graham who have strongly supported the war in their public statements appear to recognize that Trump and Hegseth are not fit to prosecute this war. Allowing it to continue through the summer will lead to an even bigger electoral disaster for Republicans come November than the one they are already facing.

Over a year ago Trump told Zelensky he didn't have any cards & couldn't last much longer against Putin.

This year Trump told us he has all the cards against Iran so they were going to unconditionally surrender in 4-6 weeks.

But Zelensky is still fighting.

And Trump is folding.

Scribbling with a Sharpie on this map (www.visualcapitalist.com) cannot alter the fact that on this planet the primary maritime choke points are: the Strait of Hormuz, Panama Canal, Strait of Gibraltar, Cape of Good Hope, Bosphorus Strait, Suez Canal, Bag-el-Mandeb Strait (Red Sea), and Straits of Malacca (South China Sea).

The Iranians are teaching Trump, who lost his war of choice the second he opened his mouth up about it on Feb. 28, a lesson. Or they would be, if he was educable. Which he doesn't appear to be. So the rest of us get to absorb the consequences of his ignorance, hubris, and dementia.

No wonder Republicans would rather see their fascist regime cancel out the midterms than let the voting take its natural course.

You know, all this back-and-forth and threatening inter-spaced with chickening out is the sign of a very disorganized, and very crazy, man.

Two-hundred-and-fifty years of American experience and we can't deal with this decorticate geezer?

Well, I'm pretty sure that Jim Bowie would shot him by now.

#15 | Posted by Zed at 2026-05-06 10:32 AM | Reply

Because it failed.

The Republicans were probably naive enough to believe, or at least desperate enough to hope, that if they got a couple of ships through then it would be like a dam breaking and others would suddenly believe it is safe.

But it is obviously not safe, and no one is going to risk their ships. Probably the only way they got those two ships to try was because they didn't have a choice... they had already had an agreement where they could be called up as an auxiliary part of the US navy.

My guess is that Trump TACO'd because he had no other choice. He could not force anyone else to transit the strait, and no one is stupid enough to do it willingly, even with US "protection".

The token muslim on this site once posted that the Shia/Persians have long memories- longer than even their own lifespans. From that perspective, there is no TACO. The ghosts of those 150 vaporized Iranian schoolgirls will follow the perpetrators of this disastrous war around for the rest of their lives- and most likely the lives of their male descendants.

So it is predicted that this little "excursion" will cost Americans about a trillion dollars.

Too late now but.. Did they ever consider just giving it to them? I mean we are gonna lose a trillion dollars and all of it has been blown to ashes. Gone forever. In addition we have caused another trillion dollars in damage to that country and the world economy.

Way to go billionaires.

I'm betting if we just gave them the money (with conditions of course .. TANSTSAAFL). we would have an entirely different relationship with Iran.

I don't understand why the world just doesn't respond with overwhelming force to states and actors like Iran (and Russia) who lash out at other states the way they have (each time they do it). Instead of waiting until a moron like Trumpy comes along and kicks the very angry Middle East hornets nest in revenge for all the little bee stings.

They support the idea of it but I don't believe they support it at this time being carried out by this president and this secdef after they've seen how they've been flailing about since the start. If we had clear goals and were actually achieving them then I have no doubt they would have passed an AUMF already.

Good to see that Li'l Marco is earning his keep. With a bit more effort he too can be considered for the governorship of a small, backward southern state.

Marco as WH spokesmodel is symptomatic if an administration which has no idea what it is doing, and lead by a guy who is so dizzy I'm surprised he can stand up straight without falling over. Our country once had a form of a nuclear agreement in place with Iran, and the Strait of Hormuz was open for passage by all ships. Now things are different, and this administration is unable to get back to the level of the Obama-lead agreement from 2016, and is having a hard time getting oil tankers out of the Persian Gulf. The widespread and on-going failure of this administration is on display for the world to see. Many of our friends are shaking their heads about the US, and all of our adversaries are laughing at us...

I guess they decided the markets had dropped enough to buy the low?

None of this makes sense militarily or geopolitically because it's not supposed to. The actions aren't being driven by thinking within that context or framing.

As with all the absurdities coming from this administration, they're only absurd because the assumptions about them are incorrect because we're not dealing with normal, good faith actors.

I think there is a plan. Sort of. Of course it has nothing to do with you or me most likely. It's called pay back for friends. Revenge and retribution for any who opposed him, etc.

At a Mar-a-Lago dinner, Trump told Oil executives that a $1 billion investment would be a "deal" to reverse environmental policies, such as cancelling electric vehicle mandates and halting wind power projects.

The industry's total contributions, including lobbying, amounted to roughly $445 million to influence the 2024 election cycle.

"I guess they decided the markets had dropped enough to buy the low?"

He is obviously trying to manipulate the markets. Oil execs are playing along grabbing as much cash as they can while they can.

Before someone cries out the dreaded words: "Windfall Tax!"
