Results in Democratic primaries in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Connecticut have reiterated that Democratic voters are hungry for change, even as they remain divided over the party's ideological future.

More from the article ...

... Democrats remain mixed over what ideological direction the party should take. But across a series of closely watched primaries, they are sending a clearer message about the party's path forward: They want change.

In marquee Senate primaries in Michigan and Minnesota, progressive candidates defeated two members of Congress with significant backing from party leaders.

Wisconsin voters narrowly rejected a democratic socialist but still chose a 40-year-old county executive who is seeking to become the state's first Black governor.

And in Connecticut, voters ousted one of the longest-serving Democrats in Congress for a challenger who campaigned on generational change.

The results so far this month deliver no clear ideological mandate. Instead, they add to mounting evidence from this year's primaries of a Democratic appetite for turnover that is cutting across the party's traditional divisions.

"The through line between these races isn't ideology. It's impatience with this political system that feels disconnected from the urgency voters feel," said Lis Smith, a national Democratic strategist. "The demand for change is much broader than the demand for socialism." ...

I posted something similar a couple three weeks ago.

That Dem voters seemed to be more interested in change (a.k.a. throw the bums out) than they were in the espoused policies of the candidates they have been backing.

Sen Schumer, if I were he, I'd be very worried. But he still has a couple years to mend his ways ...

The establishment dems lost to the worst person to ever run for president TWICE.

Even when they had trump by the balls and could lock him up for life, they refused to do it. Every bit of damage trump does is because it was enabled by the establishment dems.

They all need to lose their jobs.

Even I'm not quite that cynical. Certainly, there are always opportunists that are just opportunists with no real intention of changing anything. As it's been reported here, establishment dems are virtually indistinguishable from the republicans on some issues.

But overall, I believe you can't really run for these offices and not believe you're different, you offer something better, etc.

But the differences can be pretty small. So small, they are mistaken for being the same thing.

It's why Trump became so wildly popular in 2016. He swore he couldn't be bought because he was already wealthy.

Little did voters realize just how catastrophic Trump would be to America and the world.

2016 - Hillary got "her turn," which was a mix of establishment and "progressives" gunning for a first woman POTUS. (FTR I think she was one of the most qualified candidates for POTUS of my lifetime)

2020 - Biden easily won. By record voter turnout. No question.

2024 - Harris got "her turn," which was baked into the cake in 2020 by "progressives" who were gunning for a first woman POTUS.

He and those around him did prove useless in confronting the threat Trump and MAGA presented. I can't in any way disagree with the bold part.

No, it was bean counters who knew black women had put Biden over the line, and without black women, Biden didn't stand a chance to win Georgia, Michigan, or Wisconsin.

Biden's choice was a political and electoral one. Like most of the VP picks in history. Frankly, that was probably the difference in GA, which also led to a pair of (D) Senators.

"Little did voters realize just how catastrophic Trump would be to America and the world."

Reading the DSA platform, America would no longer be a Republic.

If you think the DSA platform is impossible to pass, ask this question.

Maga or DSA candidate.

To the party line voter, it's a straight ticket. Nobody gives a damn about their platform.

Independents must choose which wrist to cut.

Every ballot needs a blank line for every office position offered.

When ballots only have one or two boxes to check, the people aren't choosing a person as much as a party.

"If you think the DSA platform is impossible to pass, ask this question.

Is that where America is now? Are we a new two-party system? Republicans are only MAGA, and Dems are moving socialist (though many aren't)?

Well, MAGA is destroying the United States, so maybe being a "republic" (that hollowed term, which I'll leave alone, because I think it leads to BS arguments) isn't that important anymore, in view of the MAGA alternative.

I'd rather live in a country that I think is helping its citizens and the world, if it wants to, than anything MAGA has wrought. The labels are unimportant.

#65 | Posted by Dbt2 at 2026-08-15 08:56 AM | Reply

Maga is still subject to the Judiciary.

Even SCOTUS leaves a vast majority of lower courts and State Supreme Court cases alone.

DSA wants the US House over the Executive and Judicial branches.

Thats drastic and if the MAGA had that power the DSA wants?

What parts of the MAGA platform has been passed and is in the works? What destruction?

Correct. Because serving as first lady, you don't sit in a cabinet, you don't have voting privileges in either house, you don't serve on any committees in Congress, you don't actually run for anything. She served as Secretary of State for one term, and barely more than one term as a senator.

I'm not saying she wasn't qualified, but I guess I am giving more weight to holding political Office compared to serving as First Lady.

Obviously I don't proclaim to be the official grader of political experience. And I voted for her.

Why pretend 8 years in the WH teaches nothing?!? Anyone, especially a savvy former state First Lady, learns how Washington politics works.

In addition, she DID serve in Congress, as well as Secretary of State. BEFORE she was a candidate for President.

Of course Democrat voters want change.

But America doesn't want crazy and insane.

Is that where America is now? Are we a new two-party system? Republicans are only MAGA, and Dems are moving socialist (though many aren't)?

Here is my explanation of what happened:

Without the ever-present North Star threat of the USSR Boogeyman, America has lost the moral compass she used to establish her bearings since WWII. Nothing that Both Sides can point to and agree, "That's Wrong."

- Nothing that Both Sides can point to and agree, "That's Wrong."

Not even Israel's genocide in Gaza.

But then, Israel pays both sides for the privilege, though one side has more detractors of their policies than the other, which hasn't resulted in any effective reigning in of the terror.

Democrats should of course offer the American people an effective plan.

But everyone hates Trump/MAGA.

Even you know why, so stop being stupid.

Absolutely.

We hate deplorable Trumping MAGAts who continue supporting Trump and project 2025's agenda of destroying America and ruining people's lives.

We hate people like you.

IMO the Elites gave up, you see this in SFO, and LA. All the ideals just gave up.

I have a theory, that Lumpers don't believe in right or wrong. Just like many here believe there is nothing but the oppressor and the oppressed, and any position can be gauged against that PoV.

Its a major malfunction, because these captured Lumpers can't fix anything, for to fix something would mean someone is "oppressed".

This is why the fountains don't work, statues torn down, history destroyed in the name of the oppressed. Even if the "oppressed" were the oppressor in the past.
Its why the border dissolved.

Democrats need to get back to actually solving things.

Not even Israel's genocide in Gaza.

Genocide is overused word at this point as to be meaningless. There's no Israel "genocide" in Gaza, you'd have to be a historical illiterate to think so.

Islam is more than a religion. The Constitution has no answer for what is coming.

-Why pretend 8 years in the WH teaches nothing?!? Anyone, especially a savvy former state First Lady, learns how Washington politics works.

So, Barbara Bush, Melania Trump, Jill Biden learned how it all works?

Who in the entire Washington DC circuit believes those 2 ladies are even 1 step closer to being qualified to be POTUS?

Do you? I realize none of those women sought political office after living in the WH so it's different but Washington doesn't think much of first ladies.

Hillary is the all time exception to the rule. First lady experience is virtually meaningless.....except for Hillary.

Don't get me wrong.....I place the appropriate weight to serving in the senate and sec. of state.

Islam is understood by its adherents and scholars not merely as a private set of rituals, but as deen"a comprehensive way of life that provides total guidance for personal conduct, family structure, ethics, economics, and societal governance
www.readmaududi.com

Philip Hitti, the late Lebanese-American scholar who taught at Princeton University for nearly fifty years, was a leading expert on the history of Arabs and Islam. One of his books has three parts: Islam as Religion, Islam as State, and Islam as Culture. Whether Muslims are aware of it or not, orthodox Islam is a threefold system"a religious-political-cultural ideology"with the goal to subjugate the world to itself.
www.answering-islam.org

IMHO the West has neutered its religions, to make them separate from the State, Liberals lead the charge.
The idea that a Muslim just goes to Mosque on a Sunday and practices during the week like a Catholic is naive.

Mainstream Islam simply hasn't gone through the transformation like the Catholics or the Druze.

Didn't Hillary push for a major bill while first lady? IOW she was active in politics even as FirstLady, breaking norms. For instance Hillary helped create the State Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) expanding health coverage for kids.

She was actively involved in a task force on Healthcare, I am surprised Obama didn't tap her expertise for Obamacare.

She was also a Senator right?

I already clearly pointed that out.

The argument is the weight given to a first lady.

And to be fair, Hillary was certainly more a politically active first lady than most (if not all) others.

so that is yet another plus for Danforth's argument.

Not equally. Democrats typically use "Hitler" to refer to the of opposite side, so much so the accusation has lost its meaning.

I think the health care reform attempt during the Clinton Administration failed in a way that it was decided NOT to publicly attach her to Obamacare....or at least do it very carefully.

Turns out anyone can be President.(see current President for further details) No experience required. Even convicted felons can become the Prez now. Insurrectionists? No problem.

And obviously not all First Ladies are created equal.

Hillary would NOT have had to learn the while on the job. She had extensive experience with how the government works. (Or doesn't) Unlike Trumpy. Who hasn't learned how to be a President yet. She would have walked right into the job have been an able to perform the duties of the President from Day One. And as a bonus? She knows history and has morals and integrity.

Then of course there is Michelle Obama.

Case closed.

I think it went mainstream when Trump was elected, I hadn't heard the term much, then researching you see it been used to describe Reagan and even Nixon.

Regardless, when I see someone use the term I think less of the persons opinion, unless its used as snark or hypocritical way.

-Was it a failure? idk I just read she was on the task force back in the 90s, CHIPS is feather in her cap.

In August 1994, Democratic Senate Majority Leader George J. Mitchell introduced a compromise proposal that would have delayed requirements of employers until 2002 and exempted small businesses. However, "even with Mitchell's bill, there were not enough Democratic Senators behind a single proposal to pass a bill, let alone stop a filibuster."[29] A few weeks later, Mitchell announced that his compromise plan was dead and that health care reform would have to wait at least until the next Congress. The defeat was embarrassing for the administration, emboldened Republicans, and contributed to the notion that Hillary Clinton was a "big-government liberal" as decried by conservative opponents.[30]

The 1994 mid-term election became, in the opinion of one media observer, a "referendum on big government " Hillary Clinton had launched a massive health-care reform plan that wound up strangled by its own red tape".[31] In that 1994 election, the Republican revolution, led by Newt Gingrich, gave the GOP control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate for the first time since the 83rd Congress of 1953"1954, ending prospects for a Clinton-sponsored health care overhaul. Comprehensive health care reform in the United States was not seriously considered or enacted by Congress until Barack Obama's election in 2008, and the U.S. remains the only developed country without universal health care.

A lot of democrats lost their seats after this failed. Was it all due to this? I don't know....but due to the close proximity of time between it all.......many democrats would blame the loss of both houses to the GOP in 1993 on this.

This is mostly true. Democrats aren't going to openly complain about Democrats to Republicans. Maybe something tongue in cheek. Same goes for Repubs.

And that's fine.

I was happy to see when AOC was on some trip in Europe and she shut down a foreign reporter trying to get her to complain about Trump.

We have a lot of issues in America, but I'm not going to complain in other countries about it, it's our business... is more or less what she said.

And I agree.

74.

University press book I worked on considered looking back at history in decadelong periods and what was important then, but from the viewpoint of the evolving present.

Conclusion: The most important development during the last 70+ years hasn't been the Cold War and winding down of it, but the independence movements -- national and personal-identity -- and their effect on society and culture.

Yes, the Cold War was crucial in the middle of the twentieth century, but after that, its importance is overrated. In the worldwide progression toward oligarchy ever since, whether in nominally democratic, socialist, or community countries, this makes sense. Cold War eventually as a distraction?

So, history more from the bottom up, rather than top down.

"In the worldwide progression toward oligarchy ever since"

The oligarchy coming to the fore in the Capitalist West is merely the political reflection of the fact that Capitalism tends towards Monopoly.

Americans didn't win the Cold War. Capitalists did. I don't think anyone here is a Capitalist, except maybe Sitzkrieg would be able to describe himself as such. Fact is, there are more Enteepreneurs per capita in the EU than the US. brilliantmaps.com
