Texas officials are urging residents in some areas to use different modes of transportation other than their cars on Friday as ozone pollution in the state reach concerning levels. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has declared an Ozone Action Day for the Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Galveston and Brazoria areas because of high levels of ozone, also known as smog.

Can you imagine how outraged republicans from as far away as Maine would be if Gavin Newsome made such a request of people in California??

We've not had a 'smog alert' here in SoCal in something like 25-years. When we first moved here in 1980, there were several alerts each year and days when they would close schools so that children could stay indoors at home. However, over the years, the air has gotten much cleaner and today, even when driving up toward L.A., the sky is so much cleaner looking than years past.

That might have worked if we started around 30 years ago.

There are still idiots, probably even some of the idiots who issued these requests, who don't believe that this is happening.

Granted, many of them are paid to "not believe" it, as far as the general public goes though....

I was in Sault Ste. Marie, MI two weeks ago, we were in this watering hole cutting it up with the locals, this guy says to us "I don't know when it'll be warm enough to use my pool this year because of all this global warming....." and then he rolled his eyes.

That's as deep as most people's understanding will ever be of this.

It's probably already too late.

Has anyone made a gas operated suspension system plumbed from the shock absorbers to a central air motor/flywheel generator system. Everytime you drive over a surface irregularity, a puff of air from the shock absorber is directed to an accumulator, which runs the air motor, and the flywheel integrates the mechanical action, which turns a generator.

@#4 ... How about brain worms? ...

BrainDead
en.wikipedia.org

... BrainDead is an American political satire science fiction[1][2][3] comedy-drama television series created by Robert and Michelle King.[4] The series stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Laurel Healy, a documentary film-maker who takes a job working for her brother Luke (Danny Pino), a U.S. Senator, when the funding for her latest film falls through.

Assigned as his new constituency caseworker, she discovers that Washington, D.C. has been invaded by extraterrestrial insects which are eating the brains and taking control of people, including members of Congress and their staffers. ...

I was stationed at MCAS El Toro 76-83. There were days you couldn't see Saddleback mountain from the runway. Didn't get better by the time I left. Didn't help they razed all the orange groves from the base to Tustin. Irvine didn't exist when I got there. When I left, it was a fully developed city.

@#43 ... There were days you couldn't see Saddleback mountain from the runway....

I remember when I was growing up in NYC that the summer air pollution was so bad that my eyes teared from it. I was reluctant to go outside because of that. We, as kids (circa 1960's) used to talk about the "ring around the horizon," i.e., the orange-brown coloring of the horizon from the air pollution.

I also remember when I first moved into my current house (late 70's) when my neighbor's car went up their driveway, I could easily smell the exhaust.

Neither of those two things occurs anymore here.

I remember my first adult trip to LA about 35 years ago. The smog was so bad you could see a brownish ring around the horizon.

The only time you could see was after several heavy days of rain. I remember being at Yamashiro with my LA friends, on a night with a spectacular view after a horrible, rainy week.

How often is the view this clear? I asked.

One friend answered without missing a beat: "Never"

Needless to say, in the intervening years, I've seen LA's air quality improve with each visit.
