They are just making up numbers at this point. China doesn't have a 67% tariffs on the US. They are blaming Currency Manipulation and Trade Barriers with no explanation to justify the tariffs.

As these countries implement reciprocal tariffs, expect US businesses to offshore production so they can sell from non-tariff countries. Why build in the US to sell to China or the EU when you can build in Mexico and avoid tariffs?

And after building in Mexico, why come back when the tariffs end? There is no cost-benefit to moving back.

Hello Trump Recession.

He is one destructive sumbitch.

There's something in him that propels him tear things up.

It's a combination of gross mental illness and world-class stupidity.

With more than a hint of personal, cynical greed.

It would be nice if he passed away.

Donald's exposition on national finances that accompanied his tariffs was delusional.

No snark. Take a look.

What he said emphasizes that he creates fantasies divorced from everything beyond his personal needs and then acts on them.

If Trump were your Uncle Donald your family would be calling Crazy Uncle Donald and pursuing medication.

It is nice to see some on the left demonstrate some economic sense when it comes to tariffs. I happen to agree with the criticisms of tariffs from an economic standpoint.

#13 | Posted by BellRinger at 2025-04-02 06:45 PM | Reply

This is policy that were it to have any positive effect at all would be years from now; factories don't build themselves overnight ya know!

But hey, the people that decided this was somehow a good idea aren't going to feel the pinch in the meantime at all. AND they will have gotten trillions more in tax cuts.

While increasing Defense Spending, and taking out more loans from the Banks who finance their Campaigns.

Which is what really needs reforming; Corporations and billionaires are not, "We the People".

Tariffs can serve a purpose. E.g., protect fledgling domestic industries, level the playing field to compensate for foreign subsidies to their own businesses, etc.

This is just ludicrous, targeting friend and foe alike. There is only one reason for it, so Trump can manipulate the stock market and make billions shorting it.

These make-believe numbers should definitely bring prices down.

They're not make believe. They're very much real.

Problem is, we're STILL stupidly taking their statement at face value.

When the reality is that I'm sure the effects of these tariffs are specifically targeted by those who are inside enough to be part of their planning.

I'm sure there were some CEOs who had dinner at Mar a Lago whose main competitors are in Vietnam who flattered and lied to Trump to get a huge bump in tariffs.

Goods imported from China will now face a combined total tariff rate of 54%, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday.

Bessent confirmed on Bloomberg Television that all goods imported from China would face a new 34% rate based on White House calculations of what it currently imposes on U.S. exports, plus the existing 20% rate Trump had already imposed against it in the initial weeks of his administration.

Bessent added that while there may be room for discussions with Trump about that rate, he would most likely stand pat for now.

"We will charge them approximately half of what they are and have been charging us," said Trump in a press conference from the White House Rose Garden. "So, the tariffs will be not a full reciprocal."

Well, not the first time or the 4000th time he told a complete, --------- lie. Is China charing us over 134% tariffs? EU 78%? Across the board? A clumsy and outrageous lie wrapped in a dead fish of an excuse bundled in a greasy banana peel of a justification.

My favorite of the Trump Tariffs are these:
Heard Island - unpopulated, except for penguins and other wildlife
McDonald Islands - unpopulated, except for penguins and other wildlife
Jan Mayen - volcanic island (active), no population, save wildlife.
There are other small islands, no population, and then there's the booming Falkland islands (do we get anything from them? I've been there. There's nothing to export...) Population is about 3,000. That tariff is a big one, too. I think it's 41%.

Ah! Found it: www.forbes.com

The United States is such a joke. So glad *some* "conservatives" are finally waking up to this insanity we've been yelling about for years.. How utterly stupid. And I keep getting told how Trump has such an outstanding economic team. Egads.

Trump's tariffs list is missing one big country: Russia

President Trump unveiled tariffs of at least 10% Wednesday on virtually the entire world, with one notable exception: Russia.

Hey, all you U.S. companies who moved manufacturing to China:

Trump on Wednesday announced China would be hit with a 34% tariff, on top of the 20% he previously imposed earlier this year, bringing the total new levies to 54% and close to the 60% figure he had threatened while on the campaign trail.

www.reuters.com

We're all going to be paying a LOT more for everything here in the U.S.

And those companies who moved manufacturing to China to pump their share prices are gonna feel it too. Can't feel badly for them, but do for the rest of us who'll pay the price.

The Republican Congress could end this nonsense tomorrow by simply yanking back *their* tariff power that previous congresses stupidly handed over to the president. But they won't. It is their choice as much as Trump's to make this happen." David French (@DavidAFrench) April 3, 2025

Even if you think Trump is right about this spectacular exercise in economic self harm, if you're a Republican politician, odds are strong that you disagreed with what he's claiming 10 years " and in some cases 10 hours " ago. Maybe you've been studying the flimsy protectionist literature of the last decade and been convinced. But you probably are just outsourcing your judgment to partisan or personality cult --------. And if you're not speaking out against this garbage you're passively supporting it. Congrats. You own this crap. " Jonah Goldberg (@JonahDispatch) April 2, 2025

Oh, I see. You're reacting negatively to the idea that we'd all be better off if Trump had that massive coronary and died?

After yesterday, that will be the majority opinion in this country. By September, I think.

As for Vance, one devil at a time. Let's welcome Trump to Hell and then deal with him.

Goods imported from China will now face a combined total tariff rate of 54%, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday.

Considering about 50% of the country shops at Wal-Mart and that list probably means the vast majority of their sources of cheap goods will now have tariff-caused price hikes, what do you think this will do to our economy? How is this lowering prices for the average American?
