Natural catastrophes are an expense. MAGA government doesn't want flood management. What it clearly does is wait until multitudes are dead and complain they we unfairly blame Donald Trump and them for it.

Therefore, there will be a next time.

They're getting what they have always wanted. A government small enough for Grover Norquest to drown in the bathtub.

Who cares if a bunch of kids die? As Eberly is fond of pointing out, nobody cares.

Once again, there appears to be a disconnect between real world situations and MAGA/rightwing beliefs. They don't believe we need FEMA and governmental emergency services because they are all a fraud run by liberals to steal money from working class red State people. On the other hand, natural disasters caused by Acts of God are also somehow a leftwing plot, and really don't exist except due to Establishment conspiracies.

California just had an out of control horrible fire.....and what happened immediately? unmet emergency needs were pointed out. umpteen hurricanes, floods, fires, etc.

Everyone got plenty of warning about the fires. No children died. The problem wasn't proper warnings it was the very high winds and emergency responses and the crumbling infrastructure that prevented an effective response.

And California was skewered by maga and the right wing media for it.

MAGA said horrible things about California at the time, that's true.

MAGA has been saying horrible things about FEMA the whole time as well.

That's why comments like this strike such an obvious exposed nerve for Republicans: Because it's the truth. Because Republicans did in fact vote for this.

I'll bet every single state in this country has needs that have been requested and denied.

Ahhhh yes, the ol' 'there is no such thing as scale' argument.

Of course, nothing is perfect. Never will be.

However, there are differences in basic preparedness/awareness for risk.

I get tons of warnings on my cell phone well in advance of inclement weather. So much so that it annoys me sometimes because if any amount of the county I live in is part of a warning, the entire county gets the alerts.

But I'm perfectly fine with the "inconvenience" since on more than once occasion I've been woken up by my phone making what's not far off from the most annoying sound in the world from Dumb and Dumber, only to get blasted by a 70 mph gust front, torrential rain and, on a few occasions, a tornado passing within a few miles of my house within minutes of getting my family down into the basement.

My state is well prepared and has solid plans in place for known risks.

Texas was so lacking in preparedness for events that have happened without our lifetimes there were multiple cabins within reach of being washed away completely while still full of children. This will boil down to a lack of political will by Texas politicians because the extremity of their anti-gubmint views is such that people will die due to their negligence.

You are lucky that Jesus is a forgiving God. I wish I could live up to his standards, but I know that I do not all the time. In the case of forgiving people for their vile actions, I cannot bring myself to his standards. Thus, I condemn people that try to use Christian beliefs as a weapon against the faithful.

The Kerr County representative that voted against the bill with the siren system update, but for the bill that bought a bunch of drones, planes, ambulances, and boats is on record regretting his vote.

What Texas does is issue extensive studies on what systems areas should have. Implementing that system is up to the communities and usually done with a public-private partership. The most elaborate sensor and multi-siren sites run about a million bucks each before depreciation, maintenance, etc.

5.1 million for sirens lol. No.

Recent information available suggests that Joe Biden has not allocated $5.1 million specifically for sirens for Texas flooding.
Instead, Texas Governor Greg Abbott requested a major disaster declaration from the Biden administration following the catastrophic flooding that began on July 4th. This request included funding through the federal Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.
However, the federal government had not approved this type of funding in months, and the status of this request is pending.

You have created a problem that makes its own gravy.

The problem is you opposed to people coming to America to work -- people that couldn't possibly work in America if there weren't Americans hiring them.

So, what's the cost of your anti-work policy?
At the hardest right extreme, from Federation for American Immigration Reform:
"Illegal immigration costs each American taxpayer $1,156 per year ($957 after factoring in taxes paid by illegal aliens)."
www.fairus.org

What to do about it, from Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy:
"The study finds that undocumented immigrants contributed $96.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes in 2022 " a number that would rise dramatically if these taxpayers were granted work authorization."

JUDGE KELLY: We didn't ask for it. They sent it.
COMMISSIONER BELEW: They sent it.
MS. DEWELL: Exactly.
COMMISSIONER BELEW: The money is in the bank right now. Hasn't been spent. In the event that you don't spend it, you send it back. That's part of the Treasury's rules on it. If you do spend it, whatever percentage, there would be no expense to the taxpayers in Kerr County. It would all come out of that account, no matter what you do with it.

Texas chose to pretend to fight to secure the Mexican border.

BRANDON set up an easy to use system where people coming to the border could easily schedule appointments with border security for appointments. Trump ditched it.

It was not an issue in Texas. Abbott can't even tell us how its an issue or how it affects our budget. (Hint: Most PAY taxes)
It accomplished nothing for Texas.
Troops on the border weren't even coming across illegal entry very often.

Why? Very few people cross the border illegally by crawling through some desert wasteland. Most come legally through a port of entry and overstay.

I'm in a more rural area of Texas. I can't find anyone who can name an issue the town has with illegal aliens. I can name a ton of people who can't find workers though.

A decade of missed opportunities: Texas couldn't find $1M for flood warning system near camps
apnews.com

... Over the last decade, an array of Texas state and local agencies missed opportunities to fund a flood warning system intended to avert a disaster like the one that killed dozens of young campers and scores of others in Kerr County on the Fourth of July.

The agencies repeatedly failed to secure roughly $1 million for a project to better protect the county's 50,000 residents and thousands of youth campers and tourists who spend time along the Guadalupe River in an area known as "flash-flood alley." The plan, which would have installed flood monitoring equipment near Camp Mystic, cost about as much as the county spends on courthouse security every two years, or 1.5% of its annual budget. ...

The State of Texas, and MAGA, are engaged in a massive evasion of responsibility and in the end will do little or nothing about these flood deaths until the next time there is a massive flood, at which time they will also evade responsibility.

They're playing the odds here. They are betting that these disasters happen infrequently enough so that someone is able to make a profit over the flood-prone lands.

MAGA Texas has no caring for dead children. As is noted, yet once again, they get angry when you even bring the subject up.

They want mass deaths to be a three-day news story, if that, and then everyone move on.

The dead are allowed to bury the dead.

Here, let me unhypocricize that for you...

The State of California, and liberals, are engaged in a massive evasion of responsibility and in the end will do little or nothing about these fires until the next time there is a massive fire outbreak, at which time they will also evade responsibility.

I mean, it's so easy to expose liberal hypocrisy that it MUST be on purpose. I just can't figure out why they want to do it on purpose. It doesn't accomplish anything. In fact, it does the opposite.

Liberals have been trying to fight wildfires for a long time. One way of doing that is to fight climate change with clean energy. Your party of morons just decided to make it worse instead.

Now that climate damage is at our doorstep, you have to blame liberals instead of the conservatives who called it a hoax for decades.

"Just as much as liberal government doesn't want appropriate fire response."

as I said yesterday, all states are guilty of ignoring proper emergency management solutions.

It's not like liberals don't believe in emergency management, fire, flood, etc....all of that.

It's really that it's hard to get support for what we need all the time. There will always be more need than resources to solve problems. Think of the other things that funds went to rather than where it could have gone and it's always easy to play monday morning quarterback. I had quite the time watching folks spin and spin and spin after the Pacific Palisades (and other communities) were engulfed in flames recently.

I realize partisans are convinced their side is pure and better and the other side is neglectful, mean, wasteful, and that they WANT these bad things to happen.

Some people grow out of such absurd ideological beliefs. Well, the wisest of us never allow themselves to be entraped them into a horrible state of anger, hostility, and stupidity.

Some people grow out of such absurd ideological beliefs. Well, the wisest of us never allow themselves to be entraped them into a horrible state of anger, hostility, and stupidity.

As always, eb blames PARTISANSHIP when it's republicans who created the problem.
The side that called climate change a hoax for decades is by definition THE NEGLECTFUL side. They were warned these bad things would happen, but they said reducing C02 output would be too expensive. So now we get to pay WAY MORE for climate catastrophes and insurance rates.
