Farmers Pick Corn and Rocks as Harvest Intensifies
www.dtnpf.com

... The excitement of cutting into the first fields each fall never grows old for Chris Weaver.

"I don't really like to talk yields. I'm more focused on whether we maximized what nature offered us this season," said the Finksburg, Maryland, farmer. "It's all about mitigating stress on the crop. We have had some stress this year. Now, we start to evaluate what practices helped preserve yield potential and incorporate those observations into plans for next year."

Cover crop planting and delivering direct to a nearby corn mill were also keeping Weaver's farm crew hopping this week.

In Minnesota, weather woes continued for Tyler Rath, who farms near Belgrade. The first frost of the season came on Oct. 2. Although the timing isn't all that unusual, the cold snap nipped the tops of some double-crop soybeans. Rain events have also slowed harvest progress of corn and edible beans in his area. Still, he was experiencing some respectable yields on irrigated corn, despite the weather challenges. ...

TYLER RATH: BELGRADE, MINNESOTA

Commodity corn harvest usually represents the seasonal finish line for Tyler Rath. But this year, rains have delayed edible bean harvest and compressed operations. This week he was busy rodding kidney beans -- a process where a rotating metal rod slices just below the soil surface to cut the bean plants at or just below the crown. As a second step, a pickup head lifts, conveys and then places the plants into windrows to dry down further. A separate harvesting operation separates the bean from the plant.

Recent rains and cool temperatures have made rodding rougher than usual this year. It takes considerably more power to move through wet soils, Rath said.

"Typically, we can get through 20 to 22 acres an hour. This year I'm down to 5 to 6 acres per hour. These kidney beans aren't drying as quickly as I like, and we're running out of time for good harvest weather," he noted. ...

@#8 ... "I don't really like to talk yields. I'm more focused on whether we maximized what nature offered us this season," ...

An appropriate summation of what farmers face.

"What nature offered us...."

That is the income of the farmers. What nature has offered to them.

Now, what might be the expenses of the farmers?

Too bad you didn't pay attention when he said he was going to put punitive tariffs on the world destroying your markets and then research who actually pays the tariffs.

I am not the one you are talking to but I definitely believe they harmed themselves, the country, and me. I can see every day in my life how things have changed in the last two years, and how it is squarely at trumps door. What I feel is anger, not hatred, and more of you should be angry as well. I dont believe this is what trump voters thought they were voting for but they should have known. They thought it would only affect the "others" but life is not like that.

Okay...fair enough but have you ever seen an election not go your way and not talk like this?

I've been on this site for 20+ years. EVERY election that doesn't go someone's way and this is how it goes.

And that's fine. It's a free country. You're free to believe your country sucks when you don't get your way.

I didn't get my way either, BTW.

Nobody cares these farmers voted foolishly.

But it's more than just that.....their associations (farm bureau, crop associations, cooperatives, etc) all endorsed Trump. Because that's what they do.

"I dont believe this is what trump voters thought they were voting for but they should have known. They thought it would only affect the "others" but life is not like that."

All very true.

They weren't voting for Trump. They were voting against a democrat that appeared to be nothing more than an ultra-liberal identity politics candidate.

A democratic party candidate already had 2 strikes on them.......

That's how voting works. You can't vote against anything. You can only vote for things. They voted for Trump.

It's very "on-message" for you to not hold Republicans accountable for their actions.

We knew Congress would be Red. Therefore the POTUS should have been Blue. That is the only way that we get moderate policies and that the two sides are forced to work together and find common ground. I dont care if Kamala had appeared to be a full on socialist about to give the world away for free, she couldnt do it with a red congress. Some do, not usually me. I want bipartisanship. If you recall we had a bipartisan agreement on immigration until Trump asked the GOP to change their mind so he could continue to use it as a wedge issue. I think we should take a look at expanding the House. Congress can eliminate the permanent apportionment act through standard lawmaking because it is not a constitutional amendment. It is clearly a detriment at this point and a larger Congress would make it more difficult for money to play such a large part in lawmaking. It would also increase the Electoral College bringing it closer to the popular vote and making candidates work for the people's vote. I am not sorry that Trump voters are reaping what the sowed. I wish that it would teach them a lesson, though I am not holding my breath.
