We voted on Sunday, October 18, after Mass, dropping off our ballots at a drop box near one of the fire stations in our city (there are 11 drop boxes located around the city). Within 24 hours, we were notified, via text message, that our ballots had been received, verified and were assured that our votes would be counted.

For the record, we live in Southern California.

Dems will win control of Congress. What happens next will probably be newsworthy as Trump spends the rest of the year causing chaos. I hope not, but that's the likeliest scenario.

My hope is that this is the beginning of the end of what began in 1980; the rise of the religious (but not very Christian) right and the "Greed Is Good" era that's seen America returning to much the state it was in the 1920's, when the wealthy and powerful held a majority of America's wealth thanks to their paid-for politicians, while the vast majority of Americans struggle because political and economic power has once again been concentrated into the hands of corporate interests and the wealthy few.

I have a feeling the tide is turning.

Older generations want a return to normalcy. Newer generations have largely lost hope they'll achieve the American dream.

They're voting.

It's a tool in the fascist shed, that's for sure.

You know what's another tool of fascism?
Your revisionist history.

You just said "Just voted in Texas. as always, you have to show an ID."

In fact, voter ID is a new requirement that's only existed about 8% of the time Texas has been a state!

"Texas first introduced voter ID requirements in 2011 with the enactment of Senate Bill 14."

Perhaps you deliberately went with a "We have always been at war with Eurasia" type of comment.

Kentucky has a reasonable secretary of state who believes in accessibility for voters. He doesn't play games - refusing, for example, to turn over voter data to the Trump DOJ, saying to do so would constitute a "data breach." He is one of the few Republicans in this state I have confidence in.

I especially enjoy handing back facts to volunteers for MAGA/GOP candidates.

For many years, a friend of mine was one of the regular GOP volunteers who for years manned the table for that year's candidate at my polling station just outside the 150' limit ...

He turned hard core MAGA, refused to mask, and died of COVID in 2021.

I always enjoyed rattling off a list of facts when he'd say something like "Democrats spend spend spend.." came up. I'd point out how the GOP, having unitary control under both Bush and Trump, doubled spending, slashed revenues, and created the debt and now systemic annual deficits. He'd eventually extend his hand and say, "good to see you" when he couldn't take any more.

Snoofy is a realist who recognizes that Republicans make it more difficult to obtain State issued ID, solely as a tool for back-door disenfranchisement of lower socioeconomic status voters.

If Republicans wanted to actually secure elections with Voter ID, they would enact Federal legislation to provide free national voter ID for everyone.

Republicans staunchly oppose a free national ID card, precisely because it would be an end-around on State level restrictions tailored to disenfranchise demographics that Republicans don't want voting.

Your inability to respond to these observations is how we know you aren't a serious person who doesn't really understand anything about (or is lying about) why Republicans are enacting Voter ID at the State level, but never the National level.

Look at California. 22 million registered voters in 2024. 16 million votes cast. That is 6 million ballots just out there. Ballot harvesting is legal in California. It's a state that is notorious for not updating its voting rolls. The entire thing is ripe for fraud. How much fraud actually gets discovered? How much goes through undetected? If one group does it 4 times compared to 3 times for the other ...

Dementia is a weird thing. Blessings on you for being involved. Not all children are.

My wife had total left knee replacement in 2022, before the AD diagnosis but it was already underway. She couldn't remember doing her PT from day to day, nor did she really want to do it. But we persevered and got through it. Lots of screaming at each other, because I couldn't yet comprehend the degree of her memory loss at that time -- and that she wasn't just gaming me.

But two things are in long-term memory: her leftist politics of the last 50 years . . . and her simultaneous slide into ever greater admiration for the Confederates and Southern heritage she was raised to revere. Born in Montgomery, AL, 1954.

We've met Mark Warner a few times; she certainly knew what she was doing in the voting booth.

But left alone, she'd have started reading from the top and read every fucking character on the page before we got out of there. Including the amendments.

Let's just ask some questions then.

Tell us, how does Voter ID actually increase voter verification?

Give us several examples where it worked. Incidents where a person who wasn't a registered vote was stopped from voting when because they were not able to produce ID.

Because there are several examples where a person who was a registered voter lost the right to vote because they did not have ID.

So where are your examples of Voter ID working?

All anyone has ever seen in the real world is voter ID preventing registered voters from casting a ballot. We've only ever seen disenfranchisement.

Oh, and you not being able to acknowledge that fact is what makes you a liar.

"as you pointed out, it thwarts an insignificant amount of illegal votes. Do we know it's suppressing a significant amount of legal votes?"

Compared to illegal votes thwarted? Absolutely. And anyone with a room temp IQ or higher can see every attempt to "protect the vote" would suppress more votes in, say, Virginia, than the ONE ILLEGAL VOTE in VA per DECADE.

And in Texas, further ID requirements would doubtless suppress more than 3 votes per 4yr election cycle.

Finally, look at Nevada: a claim of over 15,000, initially. When NV demanded names, the claim dropped to 185.

And when investigated, ALL 185 were LEGAL voters who cast LEGAL VOTES. All of them.

Which begs the question: How many additional barriers should Nevada put up, to thwart ZERO illegal votes???

#70 | Posted by Danforth at 2026-11-03 04:53 PM | Reply

-Compared to illegal votes thwarted? Absolutely.

comparing it to an insignificant number doesn't make it significant.

That's my point.

I've done some googling and it keeps taking me to where the most votes get suppressed and that's where it's convicted felons...which is certainly a large number.

Again, not doubting it mostly due to the effort we're seeing to suppress those legal voters.......so that tells me it's significant.

But I'd like to see an estimate.......and real estimate.....and perhaps a real election where legal votes being suppressed cost an election.

"But I'd like to see an estimate.......and real estimate..."

Then start googling HOW, WHEN, WHERE, and WHY votes are suppressed. Construction, long lines, bus line disruption, heavy police presence, and additional barriers are ALL additional barriers, and the folks in that profession can tell you how many less votes they'll be for each option.

IN EVERY CASE, adding an additional barrier to voting acts as an additional barrier to voting. And IN EVERY CASE, more legal votes are thwarted than illegal votes.

In VA, for example, it's a no-brainer. ONE illegal voted PER DECADE. There is no possible way an additional barrier wouldn't suppress more.

"perhaps a real election where legal votes being suppressed cost an election."

Look for a close race with "certain" voters having to wait 3x longer than others.

That's not by accident.

How long did it take YOU to vote?

"comparing it to an insignificant number doesn't make it significant. That's my point."

Then your point is stupid.

The fact the illegals number is so close to non- existent IS THE POINT. So ANY amount of suppression is magnitudes more than illegal votes thwarted.

The "over 15,000" claim regarding Nevada just shows how willing-to-be-wrong the government currently is.

Even with a 99.99% accuracy rate (impossible, I know) it would take VA over 4000 years to protect as many votes as they'd thwart IN ONE ELECTION CYCLE.

I don't really google....I "danforth" it like I am right now.

Have you even noticed I agree entirely with you?

All I've done is ask a question you can't really answer. It doesn't mean you're wrong. It just means you can produce an election that was decided by suppressed votes.

or you can and you just don't want to.
