Coined by Financial Times columnist Robert Armstrong in early 2025, it was originally used by Wall Street traders to describe a specific pattern: President Trump would announce massive tariffs, the markets would tank, and then he would "chicken out" (delay or reduce the tariffs) to settle the markets.

Here is why this specific piece of sarcasm can be both brilliant and self-defeating:

When it works (The "Scalpel")
It exposes a pattern: It moves the conversation from a single event to a predictable behavior. It suggests that the "chaos" is actually a loop that can be gamed for profit (the "TACO trade").

It hits a nerve: Because the acronym suggests weakness"a trait the President actively distances himself from"it is rhetorically effective. His visible frustration when asked about it in the Oval Office proved that the sarcasm "landed."

It's catchy: Like all good political branding, it's simple, memorable, and turns a complex economic policy into a punchy joke.

How it becomes self-defeating (The "Sledgehammer")
It can incentivize the behavior you fear: As Robert Armstrong himself noted, there is a risk that by mocking a leader for "chickening out," you might inadvertently goad them into not backing down next time just to prove the critics wrong. If "chickening out" actually prevents an economic crisis, mocking the retreat might make the next crisis more likely.

The "Boy Who Cried Wolf" effect: If critics use "TACOing" to describe every single policy shift, they risk becoming complacent. It creates a narrative that "he'll never actually do it," which can lead to a lack of preparedness if or when a policy is actually fully implemented.

Misunderstanding "Negotiation": To his supporters, what critics call "TACOing" is viewed as "The Art of the Deal""starting with an extreme position to move the needle. By using a sarcastic acronym, critics may fail to engage with the actual strategy being used, making their critique feel "out of touch" to half the country.

Ruining Actual Tacos: Now you have to think of Trump every time you put a taco in your mouth.

Since 7 Oct 2023, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu's inhumane pogrom against the Palestinians have resulted in 72,045 deaths in Gaza, the majority women and children, and over 175,000 maimed or wounded. Malnutrition and disease are also taking their toll on the people in Gaza. In the West Bank, 1,113 Palestinians have been killed, including US Citizen Nasrallah Abu Siyam (19).

Since its founding in 1948, Israel has been the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign aid at $317.9 billion (Source: www.cngress.gov).

US Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) vowed to continue sending those billions of dollars of hardworking American taxpayer funds to Israel and to block any legislation that would be harmful to Israel (4 Feb 2026): Charles Schumer is Not a Good Human Being

International arrest warrants for crimes against humanity issued by the ICC remain active for Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and former IDF General Yoav Gallant. In addition, the Istanbul Public Prosecutor in Turkiye issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and 30 other suspected Israeli war criminals.

Indictments are merely allegations. To ensure a fair trial, Messrs Netanyahu and Gallant must both be presumed innocent until they are proven guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt at an international tribunal to be held for them in the Hague at future dates.

And here we think the Ukrainians are fighting desperately for their national survival against Russia, which of course they are. If America is ever invaded, I hope we fight just as hard as the Ukrainians or this Palestinian below.

@#21 ... But will that fun last until 4am?

Who knows. ..

It has lasted.

Listening to CSN&Y

Crosby, Stills Nash & Young - Almost Cut My Hair (1970)
www.youtube.com

Curious, the artist on the website is CS&N, but the artist on the album cover shown is CSN&Y.

I cited the song as the latter.

Lyrics excerpt ...

...
This is the third track from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's 1970 Deja Vu written by David Crosby. It was one of the few tracks that was recorded in the studio with the entire band who were engaged in internal squabbling.

[Verse 1]
Almost cut my hair
It happened just the other day
It was gettin' kinda long
I could-a said, it was in my way
But I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly
Yes I feel like I owe it to someone

[Guitar Solo]

[Verse 2]
Must be because I had the flu for Christmas
And I'm not feelin' up to par
It increases my paranoia
Like lookin' at my mirror and seein' a police car
But I'm not givin' in an inch to fear
'Cause I promised myself this year
I feel like I owe it to someone

[Guitar Solos]

[Verse 3]
When I finally get myself together
I'm gonna get down in that sunny southern weather
And I find a place inside to laugh
Separate the wheat from the chaff
I feel like I owe it to someone

@#20 ... And when they're asked if they know extending otherwise expiring tax cuts is based on all new borrowing! ...

OK, I was having some fun here, and then you came in with your usual fact-based reality. :)

{sigh}

OK, back to the GOP and deficits...

My long answer short...

The GOP complains about the deficit, vociferously.

But, the GOP seems to be the main contributor to the deficit.

U.S. Presidents and the Federal Deficit (2023)
amarkfoundation.org

... By looking at the federal deficit or surplus based on fiscal year, the data in this report show all four Republican presidents since 1980, with our methodology, increased the federal deficit during their time in office: Ronald Reagan had a 94% increase, George H.W. Bush had a 67% increase, George W. Bush had a 1,204% increase, and Trump had a 317% increase.

Both Democratic presidents since 1980 with completed terms decreased the federal deficit while in office: Bill Clinton had a 150% decrease to end his presidency with a federal surplus of $128 billion, and Barack Obama decreased the deficit by 53%. Joe Biden decreased the deficit by 50% in his first fiscal year, but his overall results are pending the end of his presidency. ...

Is this not a time to celebrate the fact that two conservatives voted for this? That not all conservatives are in the back pocket of Trump? I mean, I've read numerous comments predicting the doom and gloom of the Supreme Court since Trump got in charge of ---. Sure, not all the conservatives voted for this, but c'mon y'all...this IS a huge deal and maybe should give a bit of hope and damnit...can't anyone acknowledge that there are conservatives AND liberals who together do the right thing?

Good Lord...maybe I missed it, but I didn't even see anyone here acknowledge last December when BOTH parties AND Trump did the right thing when a bill was UNANIMOUSY PASSED and signed by TRUMP making animal cruelty a federal crime and Trump issuing orders to create a task force to enforce it and then also Trump directing the FDA to start enforcing the regulations and laws governing the ethical treatment of animals in research labs or Trump saying he wants to see an end to all animal research, after all AI can do better now anyways. Of course Trump says a lot of bullshht, but when he actually DOES something right, maybe giving some thumbs up might encourage him to do more good things. The media BARELY gave this stuff any coverage and I only found out by accidentally seeing ONE story online by ABC. If the media would have blasted the amazing-ness of it, it would trigger Trump to do more...he craves it when the media has to acknowledge He and both Dems and Repubs did something RIGHT...And let him take all the credit "There's never been a president like me fighting for the animals..." Use his own ego to propel him to do the right things. Just MY opinion.

Is it THAT hard to give credit where credit is due? That's why I'm an independent, even if I can't spell it correctly in my username LOL ;-) Choosing a "side" would make me want to be loyal and ignore the wrongs that my side does and ignore the good when the other side does.

That's what I'm doing...this shows there IS hope....that there are still folks in the Supreme Court who are basing their judgements on the law and not politics.

Apropos?

Golden Earring - Twilight Zone (1982)
www.youtube.com

(the long version of the song)

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

...
Songwriter George Kooymans of Golden Earring was inspired not by the TV show "Twilight Zone", but by the (at that point obscure) novel The Bourne Identity, which years later would be made into a successful movie.

[Verse 1]
It's two a.m., the fear has gone
(It's two a.m., the fear has gone)
I'm sitting here waitin', the gun's still warm
(I'm sitting here waitin', the gun's still warm)

Maybe my connection is tired of takin' chances
Yeah, there's a storm on the loose, sirens in my head
Wrapped up in silence, all circuits are dead
Cannot decode, my whole life spins into a frenzy

[Chorus]
Help, I'm steppin' into the Twilight Zone
Place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
My beacon's been moved under moon and star
Where am I to go now that I've gone too far?

Help, I'm steppin' into the Twilight Zone
Place is a madhouse, feels like being cloned
My beacon's been moved under moon and star
Where am I to go now that I've gone too far?

How Reuters captured the photo of former Prince Andrew leaving custody
www.reuters.com

... Slumped in the back seat of his Range Rover, a visibly shaken man once referred to as the "Playboy Prince" stares ahead of him as the car leaves Aylsham police station in Norfolk, England.
The photo, taken by Reuters photographer Phil Noble, went viral when it was published late on Thursday.

It shows Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger brother of King Charles, after he was released from police custody following a day of questioning over allegations he sent confidential government documents to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

When news that Mountbatten-Windsor had been arrested broke early on Thursday, Manchester-based Noble began the six-hour drive south to Norfolk.

Journalists knew the former prince had been arrested in Norfolk -- the county that is home to the royal Sandringham estate where he resides. Since officers from Thames Valley Police -- covering southeast England -- were questioning him, there were potentially 20 or more police stations where he could have been held.

Following a tip, Noble headed to the police station in the historic market town of Aylsham.

Not much was going on, Noble said. There were a couple of other members of the media there, including Reuters video journalist Marissa Davison.

Six or seven hours went by. Darkness fell. Still, nothing was happening. It seemed like this was the wrong station -- after all, it was well over an hour's drive from Mountbatten-Windsor's home.

The team of two Reuters journalists decided to book rooms at a hotel. Noble packed up and started heading down the road towards it.

Minutes later, he got a call from Davison. Mountbatten-Windsor's cars had arrived. ...

The Royal Family may also ask Parliament to remove him from the succession line to the throne. Andrew is eighth in line and Canada, Australia, and New Zealand must pass similar legislation in their Parliaments. This is more symbolic, but important nevertheless.

Andrew looks shell-shocked.
