Several studies suggest that people in red states have more babies than those in blue states. A new report from a conservative-leaning group says that could have implications for politics and culture.

MCCAMMON: And these authors looked at young adults ages 25 to 35 who self-identify as liberal or conservative. They found that young liberal women today are much less likely to have children than young conservative women, with a gap of more than 30 percentage points. And that's a big change since the 1980s, when there was a much smaller gap between liberal and conservative women.

If liberals just had more children would the birthrate issue disappear?

They're also lower socioeconomic status with higher dependency on welfare.

Imagine that.

As birthrates tumble, some progressives say the left needs to offer ideas and solutions
www.npr.org

... When Emma Brennan and Lauren Wright got married last year, the couple began weighing seriously whether or not to have a child. "A lot of people our age are not having kids, or are waiting, and they have a great life regardless," Brennan said.

Wright and Brennan, who live in what they describe as a liberal enclave of Baltimore, said they lean toward wanting to be parents, but the world often feels like a scary place to raise children. They worry about climate change, rising income inequality, and America's polarized politics. "We have conversations about the state of the world," Wright said.

Like a lot of young, liberal-leaning Americans, they've heard about falling birthrates, and the world's rapidly shifting demographics. But they said the most prominent voices offering ideas and solutions are coming from the political right. "That whole Trump thing, we'll give you a bunch of money" to have a baby, Brennan said, sounding skeptical.

Wesley Lapointe for NPR

A growing number of researchers, and thinkers on the left, told NPR they worry that progressive leaders have largely opted out of the growing public discussion over birthrates and shrinking families, ceding the policy space to right-wing voices.

"If progressives don't want to talk about it, and self-censor, then no one is going to talk about things that might impact progressives," said Alice Evans, who studies gender issues at Kings College London and is currently a visiting professor at Stanford University. ...

As families shrink, the right takes the lead

Birthrates around the world, including in the U.S., are dropping steadily, to a level that demographers say falls well below the number of children per woman -- roughly 2.1 on average -- needed to maintain a stable population. The "total fertility rate" in the U.S. has fallen to a record low of 1.6, while in many countries the rate has dropped below one child per woman on average. ...

@#4 ... States where women are treated like livestock have more births? ...

imo, that is a correct assertion.

I have an in-law who once told me that women should just ~stay in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant, and have dinner on the table when the man comes home from work.~

I was taken aback at that comment. But the current stats seem to bear it out.

Thanks to rightwing policy, starting with Reagan, for average Americans, raising a family of more than one or two children has become impossible, unless you want spend those child raising years with both parents working one to two jobs, barely making enough money to keep the family head above water.

So, yeah...drop in birth rate among people who are not completely stupid.

WTF did these dirtbags expect?

There is actually fodder here for a real discussion about the birthrate, and young people who skew towards being more liberal are not dating or engaging in sex nearly as much as in the past. But no one here can resist the urge to just sling insults at the others party.

I've said it before, and I don't know why I continue to hope it can be like it used to, but this site used to actually have meaningful discussions about the topics of the day. Now it's just a cesspool of trolls and insults.

It's too expensive to have kids.
If both parents work, then you pay for day care. Too expensive.
Healthcare is too expensive.
College is too expensive.
Team sports that turn into all-year travel leagues, dance class, etc. : too expensive.

The rent it too goshdarn high.

It makes sense. Steeped in Marxism leftists are trained to despise the nuclear family and regard children as wards of the state. Why go through parenthood just to surrender your kids to government?

Could it be cannabis use?

Cannabis is detrimental to sperm: even if they can fertilize, there can be DNA damage. Many miscarriages and (in the case of IVF) "day 3 crashes" which is when paternal DNA normally kicks in, are cannabis related. Dr Natalie Crawford on the Huberman Lab podcast out now.

Where's the incentive to have kids?
They're expensive. By all indications, their chances for success will be fewer than their parents. There are already too many people on the planet.
Something about being aware of what a mess the world's in that makes people not want to add to it.

-It's too expensive to have kids.

It's expensive, for sure. So it's either worth it to you or it's not.

and involves making sacrifices. You can either make them or you can't.
