Republicans are punishing poor people, elderly people, and children, intentionally trying to make them starve, for political purposes... theoretically for political gain?

I was just looking at another thread where BillJohnson was talking about being a Christian.

How does this conform with Christian values?

Trump's Approval Rating is his lowest ever, 36 percent, meaning ONLY the Base, no swing voters.

Democrat Elites hanging infinite Obamacare subsidies over the American public's head

Simply unable to come to terms with their poor legislation, nor how fix it.

I just read this threat from a Republican Senator. It goes something like this ...

If the GOP Nukes the filibuster with 51 votes, why vote for a continuing CR? Why not just cancel a whole bunch of expenses that the Democrats wouldn't let us cancel before.
Be careful what you wish for.

Democracies work best when there is compromise.
"Mutual respect is necessary for a democracy to function, and denigrating another's patriotism, misrepresenting an opponent's positions, and refusing to cooperate even on matters on which there is agreement undermine the relationships needed to resolve differences."

Both Democrats and Republicans agree people should be fed, it's time to compromise.

Because its not their problem.

Quite simply, the Democrats broke it, so they bought it, thinking they were the only people who knew how to do it. It's been broken for some time. Pelosi just papered over it, causing even more upheaval.

ObamaCare was doomed if insurance prices went too high. Even with the mandate penalty, it's cheaper not to get insurance. It's now in a death spiral; only those who need it now will sign up for it.

Not to worry, insurance companies made their money!

Repubilcans must not have a better plan because we have yet to hear one. Repubilcans would prefer if the Republicans depending on those subsidies just don' thave health care any more. If that's not correct please set the record straight!

"It's over and if they cant get 7 democrats to agree it's over, people who go hungry will can look to the Democrat party as the reason."

Health care through ACA subsidies and not going hungry thanks to SNAP are two different things.
SNAP has funds right now. Trump won't release them, in defiance of the law.
There's nothing seven Democrats can do to change that.

The republicans have spent years tearing ACA apart piece by piece because it was the black guys legislation and they hated that fact. If that wasn't true they would have spent all this time changing it and building on it for the good of the American people. Unless repubs, of course, are just willing to admit they don't give a rats behind about Americans and are only concerned about shareholders in the medical insurance industry.

#43 | Posted by rukiddin at 2025-11-04 05:58 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

That is an example of why I can't wrap my head around people who support republicans. They do literally NOTHING to help poor and middle class Americans.

Generally speaking, anything that does help them comes from democrat policies that republicans refuse to help with and then take credit for.

Like what substantive thing has the republicans done for middle and lower class people over the past 40+ years?

No child left behind, maybe, could at least be considered an effort at helping them

Tax cuts that primarily benefit the wealthy is the only thing the republicans have done over the past 25 years.

Other than the culture war ----, which they are successful with and I accept that there are lower and middle class people who want what the republicans are serving on that stuff

but what substantive economic thing have the republicans done?

I suspect that one of the reasons senators don't want to eliminate the filibuster is they would have no place to hide! They would have to take tough votes that would alienate many of their constituents. Since senators are elected state wise, senators in "purple" states know that they will be at risk if they are forced to vote on every contentious measure coming before them. There would be a lot of intra party fighting to tweak bills to minimize their risks.

The temporary, enhanced premium tax credits that raised subsidies and expanded eligibility under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021 and were later carried forward by the Inflation Reduction Act were written to sunset at the end of 2025, returning subsidy rules closer to pre-ARPA levels unless Congress acts to extend or make the enhancements permanent (sources: [1], [1], p1_s3). The Affordable Care Act's original premium tax credit remains part of law and would continue after 2025, but many households would face substantially higher premiums if the ARPA-era enhancements expire (sources: [3], p1_s2).

It's due to expire the end of this year, regardless. Democrats are determined to extend the enhancements and Trump is determined it won't happen.

I side with Trump who wants to fix the existing problems with it.

Dan,

"Starvation isn't the barometer. Food insecurity is."

Neither are.

It's Congress not doing what's good for all Americans, and not just the ones who vote for them.

So the answer from the GOP is to strip all the assistance, make the insurance unaffordable and allow people to die from diseases that could be treated or discovered early with preventative care.

It is clear the GOP has no interest whatsoever in fixing the problem. They've had over TWENTY years to fix the problem instead of just voting to kill ACA piecemeal and what have they proposed?

Trump isn't pandering.

He is collecting bribes for favorable legislation and tariff exemptions.

Starvation isn't the barometer. Food insecurity is.

The easy answer to reducing the number of families on SNAP is to increase the minimum wage. SNAP subsidizes poverty level wages that WalMart, McDonalds, Amazon, etc pay to their employees.

If minimum wage ($7.25) kept up with inflation and productivity it would be over $26 per hour and 13,000,000 families would no longer qualify for SNAP.

Dan,

Eventually companies will just stop offering health care benefits altogether.

When companies can't afford to continue eating the cost or employees complain their payroll deduction is so high, it is inevitable companies will have to do something.

Then more people will be forced onto Obamacare.

Is that what dem leadership is actually hoping for?

Nixon,

"It is clear the GOP has no interest whatsoever in fixing the problem. They've had over TWENTY years to fix the problem instead of just voting to kill ACA piecemeal and what have they proposed?"

The GOP didn't write the ACA. Democrats pushed it through without a single Republican vote.

Since then, every attempt to propose reforms has been blocked or they frame it as a plot to repeal ACA. Even sometimes make it racial to shut down the debate.

Dems will say anything to generate noise to get what they want.

You can't "fix" something when one side treats it as untouchable and uses it as a campaign prop instead of a policy.

Your access to affordable health care should not depend on whether you are working or not.

It should not even depend on whether you are a Citizen or not.

But a real Christian would know this is exactly what Jesus taught us.

A Fake Plastic Christian like yourself would obviously not understand this and not want to understand it. Because then he would be obliged to do as his Lord and Savior requires him to do. To treat the least among us as we would treat him.

Specific examples he gives of helping "the least" include:
Feeding the hungry
Giving drink to the thirsty
Welcoming the stranger
Clothing the naked
Caring for the sick
Visiting those in prison

He never said that you can ONLY treat people that are gainfully employed and currently working with kindness.

Which is not the flex you seem to think it is Fake Plastic Christian.

All it did was prove to all forever that Republicans had (and still have) no interest in helping Americans have access to affordable healthcare.

"So what is your opinion on the working and Middle Class issue with Obamacare we've been hearing about for years?"

What issue is that? Be specific.

"If the extensions are continued as is, how many more years will it be before someone else tries to address it."

It'll peak with the baby boomers, and die off with them, too. The upcoming years will have the highest retired-to-worker ratios in our lifetimes.

You know...math. Which, if you want to address it...the answer is universal health insurance.

"Since then, every attempt to propose reforms has been blocked or they frame it as a plot to repeal ACA. "

Good God, man, there were OVER 70 attempts to repeal the ACA.

They'd put in on every bill like I'd add mustard to my bratwurst.

Nobody needed to "frame it" as a plot to repeal the ACA; it was in the literal language of the bill.

"You can't "fix" something when one side treats it as untouchable and uses it as a campaign prop instead of a policy."

You literally believe you're talking about Dems, and in reality, you're talking about Republicans. When amongst themselves at the Heritage Institute, Republicans could never come up with a plan that didn't include a mandate. Once Obama copied the HF Plan, Republicans disowned it.

Then, whenever an error or weakness would be found, no Republican EVER voted to fix it, for fear they'd be primaried for "supporting" Obamacare. (Contrast that to the R's eff-up with the tax code and farmers, which the Dems voted to correct immediately.)

Ultimately, Republicans always failed to repeal Obamacare, especially as more voters realized that WAS the Affordable Care Act. And, of course, because they've never had even the concept of a plan.

But everyone who's ever been to a committee meeting about the numbers knows it doesn't work without a mandate. Republicans effectively repealed Obamacare when they eliminated the mandate. They own this new plan.

What sounds better: TrumpCare, or The Unaffordable Care Act...?

Good God, man, there were OVER 70 attempts to repeal the ACA.

With no plans to replace it.

What does that mean?

It means the Fake Plastic Christian sounds like he is parroting and repeating the teachings of Fixed Spews.

He is definitely NOT repeating the teachings of his supposed Lord and Savior.

Dan,

I can talk about several things. Not sure which way to go.

Higher taxes, longer lines, broken cost structure, adding millions more people to a system that alteady struggles to remain solvent?

Boomers dying off won't fix a broken system. At some point later might be a time to address some issues but that's a while off.

Waiting for boomers to die is not the reform we need now.

Dan,

So...are you saying continuing the extensions without any changes to ACA is morally and fiscally responsible?

UHC is off the table right now and you know it. Insurance companies are doing just fine.

What else do you suggest other than waiting for a generation to die?

Dan,

Forcing healthy people to subsidize a system that never addressed the real drivers of cost such as bloated pricing, complex billing and insurer profits, was a big mistake but would not have passed if it had.

#97 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2025-11-06 03:05 PM | Reply

Why does every major developed country with UHC pay a lower percentage of their GDP for better longevity results?

You're advocating for a profits-based system, which values monetary growth over measurable health results.

Dan,

"Why does every major developed country with UHC pay a lower percentage of their GDP for better longevity results?"

Why is America's infant mortality rate 33 out of 38?

Clearly, our health care system isn't delivering the results or value it should.

I get the impression Trump is at least trying to address some of these structural issues.

We didn't get here overnight, and blaming one party or the other won't fix it.

It's time to work together to focus on the problems, to find real solutions.

The USDA who manages SNAP put out this list in 2024 of items purchased by Food Stamps and prioritized them in order.

Did you get that from Facebook? From the laughable "Economic Policy Innovation Center"? Did you just add "1,2,3,4, etc." to the left hand side and ignore the RANK number in the middle? Did you stop and ask "What are the 1 through 10 items in the ranking? They aren't the 1-10 you listed.

Let me help:
About 40 cents of every food purchase dollar was spent on basic items like meat, fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs, and bread.
Another 20 cents was spent on sweetened drinks, desserts, salty snacks, candy, and sugar.
The remaining 40 cents was spent on a variety of items such as cereal, prepared foods, other dairy products, rice, beans, and other cooking ingredients.

In other words those using SNAP are enabled to eat most of the same things other Americans eat. Did you think you could shame SNAP recipients with your condescending accusatory bullshit?
