The deal appears to be that Jesus is God's habitation on earth, as both the Arc of the Covenant and the Temples were.
A hint in Revelations is that when a third Temple is built in Jerusalem, the AC steps into it and proclaims himself to be God.... this is a major blasphemy because Jesus is that Temple now, and he is not in any way amused.
The living and the dead in Christ (which may or may not include Cultural Christians!) then receive a new body, just as JC did when he rose.
John records Jesus as saying that he has to leave after the Resurrection so the Holy Spirit third of the Trinity can come to earth:
"Jesus explained in John 16:7 that his departure was necessary for the Holy Spirit to come, largely to transition from a localized physical presence to a universal, internal presence in believers.
His ascension finalized his redemptive work (glorification), allowing for the new covenant ministry where the Spirit empowers all believers, rather than only those near Jesus.
Key reasons Jesus left before the Holy Spirit arrived:
Universal Presence: While Jesus was on earth, his presence was limited by human form. The Holy Spirit's coming allowed God to be present in every believer simultaneously, regardless of location."

That's the story, anyway.
